This school is horrible. The walls are fake and flimsy, and the hallways are far too thin for 900+ students. The bathrooms are dirty, and a lot of the stall doors dont have functioning locks or toilet paper holders. Some of the teachers are cool, but most of them are cortisol-raising demons sent to make people suffer. The class sizes are too large for misbehavior to be managed, and many of the counselors don't do their job (except for a few). In fact, you only feel more miserable and ignored after speaking to some of them. Lots of the students are violent and rowdy, to the point where you can barely get through a hallway without being shoved over. Even then, they barely get punished and actually get treated better by admin in PBIS events. All in all i think that being sent to this school is a human rights violation

My kid is in 7th grade, and I thought things would be better in the second year at this school
Nope. This school doesn’t know how to keep your kids safe. Students are violent. Teachers can’t handle the kids. Nothing gets done about it. There is no communication between departments. A 6th grader girl got her finger broken by a boy aggressively grabbing a ball from her! How does this happen????
Parents take your kids far away from here.

My child started middle school at Old Mill North in 6th grade. She was only 11 years old, and what she had to endure as an 11 year old was just awful. This school is a nightmare for parents and the students. There are physical fights ALL THE TIME! The teachers try, but cannot control the kids in the classroom. Bullying is going on, and its the same kids every time. In my opinion not enough is being done for the safety of the children. Not enough consequences for those repeat offenders. We attended a basketball game at the school one evening as a family, and it was so rowdy. There were police cars present and fight was breaking out in the gymnasium! I grabbed my younger child and we ran out of there. I did not feel safe at all. What kind of school do you need police presence at for school events?? The buses take an over an hour to get home, which means my child is out of the house fom 8:30 until 5:30. This is too long of a day for these kids!! What makes things worse is the bus driver is the nastiest woman I have ever met. I wish i could sell my house and get out of this area. I know middle schools are challenging because of the age of the kids, but this school is worse than horrible!

Old Mill Middle School North experienced redistricting starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Most of the students enrolled this year were previously districted to attend Old Mill Middle School South. See the AACPS website to learn more about the redistricting that occurred for the northern half of the county starting in 2024 and for the phase two districting plan to start in Fall, 2026. Students in the OMMS-N attendance zone will attend Severn Run High School which opened this school year. OMMS-N is located in a very old building currently in the Old Mill HS/MS complex that will be torn down in 2028. Old Mill Middle North will move into a new building in Fall, 2028 at the former CAT North, located in Severn at 800 Stevenson Road.

Note - Students who are currently districted for OMMS-S will attend Old Mill High School which will also get a new building in 2028 at its current location

OMMS-N has an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Some students who are districted for other schools attend OMMS-N, if they are accepted (by lottery), since the IBMY Program is a Magnet Program (even though it is school wide curriculum). Students apply to attend AACPS magnet programs/schools in the Fall of 5th grade.

My son is a 6th grader this year. It has been a positive experience. The teachers have been incredibly supportive, communicative and are clearly dedicated. My son has a 504 plan, and we have had an excellent experience - especially in comparison to the last couple years at an ACCPS Elementary School. The staff is professional and genuinely caring. The Parent Teacher and Students Association (PTSA) had a slow start but is going strong now. It needed to start anew this year, since the families are all new to the school. There are after school clubs and activities for the students, including a Valentine's Day dance and spring sports are planned.

The main downside of our experience has been that my son doesn't arrive home until about 5:00PM daily and 5:30 if he attends a club. He is on the bus for about an hour each way. The attendance area is large and spans South all the way to Annapolis.

I cannot recommend this school to anyone. I was a student here over 10 years ago. The atmosphere and bullying has gotten worse amongst the students and staff. Staff have a nonchalant attitude toward any maladaptive behaviors. If you work here, you will feel so alone and burnt out. The support is sooooo minimal especially if you work in the Special Education department. Working with special needs is not easy whatsoever, and requires an all hands on deck approach even if you are assigned to a 1 on 1. Why am I documenting the same behaviors and nothing is being done? I will give some grace, education has changed drastically over the years and things are overwhelming post-Covid. However, I’ve worked in Sped at 2 other schools and facilities in the county when schools were re-opening, but this is the worst experience I have ever had and I love working with children!
So much more I could say but I will leave it at that for now!

The school is simply dirty, staff don't care about the children and I want watched a parent be screamed at and harassed for trying to get her daughter early after a fight.

Had to pull my son out of this school due to bullying. Teachers and Administrative staff do absolute nothing to protect the children in this school. It’s like zoo full of wild animals running around. Teachers just stand in the hallway doing nothing when they see bullying happening.

Most of the time this school is fine but I find that everyone is doing drugs, getting suspended for 5 days, then coming back and repeat cycle. I feel that we need more strict monitoring. some of the teachers have unfair policies like no charging laptops if its over 30% or only letting one student at a time leave the room.

I think the IB MYP is great at OMMN. This is a great way for kids to learn and apply what they learn to real life. OMMN has a new principal this year who is wonderful! I'm also amazed with how many of the teachers go above and beyond with their involvement in the extracurricular activities the school has to offer. I feel most of the teachers there love their jib and their students and truly want to do what's best for them. My daughter will graduate from OMMN this year, but my son will be starting there next year. We're looking forward to seeing what other great changes the new principal will make.

My experience with my daughter going to OMMN has not been perfect, but when there is an issue I address it right away with the staff and they take care of it. I like it because my kid is exposed to all different people. Also they take action when someone is acting up. And they recognize the kids that r doing good!!

Wonderful socio-economic diversity with teachers who truly care and a staff (especially the IB Coordinator and the Principal) focused on the overall well being of each student attending. Best kept secret. My child attends through the magnet prgm (not our home school) and it's absolutely worth the distance!!! I simply don't understand why OMMN is ranked as a 6 out of 10. Makes no sense to me.

Old Mill Middle North the best school in the world because it has great students and teachers

Posted: February 28, 2013

This excellent school is an authorized IB MYP World School with a economically and racially diverse student body, along with a SUPURB teaching and administrative staff. The overall atmosphere here is academic, creative, and eclectic, where all students are encouraged to achieve and reach their full potential. Students are divided into smaller "teams" within each grade which allow a smaller group to circulate with their team mates between their team teachers, thus allowing teachers to get to know their students well as individuals. Teachers are caring, and open to communicating and working with parents. Course material is IB--interesting & international in scope--how many schools teach Chinese and Cricket? Bravo OMMN, officially trying to get the word out: you're doing a GREAT JOB--keep up the good work!! Glad to be a part of this school.
