My experience as a Special Education teacher at Old Mill Middle School South from 20162018 was one of the most difficult periods of my educational career.

When I arrived at the school, I felt as though I was carrying the weight of prior allegations and was placed under a level of scrutiny that required me to constantly prove myself. Rather than feeling supported as a new educator, I often felt that assumptions had already been made about my abilities and professionalism.

During my time there, I worked under Assistant Principal Courtney Roser and the principal serving during those years. While accountability and evaluation are important, my experience often felt more focused on documenting shortcomings than supporting growth. I frequently left meetings and observations feeling discouraged rather than developed.

One experience that remains with me involved a classroom observation while I was co-teaching. During a district visit, I felt that my contributions were overlooked and that the focus was primarily on finding fault. Whether intentional or not, the experience left me feeling that conclusions about my performance had already been formed.

What made this especially frustrating was that it did not reflect the work I was doing with students. During those years, I worked extensively with 7th-grade students receiving special education services and helped many improve their writing skills for the state assessment. I watched students gain confidence, strengthen their writing, and make meaningful academic progress. Those successes deserved recognition as well.

More than ten years later, what I remember most is not a particular evaluation, but a culture that often felt lacking in trust, transparency, and support. Effective schools create environments where educators receive honest feedback, meaningful coaching, and opportunities to grow. My experience was the opposite.

I have since moved on to larger opportunities and continued growing as an educator and leader. I share this reflection not out of bitterness, but in hopes that school leaders continue examining how workplace culture, evaluation practices, and leadership decisions affect educators. Every teacher deserves to be evaluated fairly, supported professionally, and judged on the full scope of their contributions to students.

Unfortunately, that was not my experience at Old Mill Middle School South.

I went to north for my 6th grade year and it wasnt the best for me, at north it was lots of drama and unnecessary fights and what not and dont get me wrong that kind of stuff can honestly happen anywhere but last year which was my seventh grade year I was redistricted to south and honestly I havent been happier, the teachers arent bad at all and if you are a good child that does your work and is respectful, there is genuinely no issues with this school, its not dirty, I have met the most supportive best friends ever, and I honestly cant say anything bad about my experience here.

After the redistricting omms and the new building is upgrading their teaching styles and test scores kids don't fight that often but sometimes can be loud but easy to make friends and is decent for test as it offers stem and more programs like avid very good for sports so is decent at teaching very good at sports team displince is 6 decent pretty controlled but sometimes is a little hard but is not distraction and still fights are rare now after the change

OK. This school is no good. Here is why. So first of all, Both Old Mill schools are turning to a Marathon but a Nightmare too. This is why you should leave this school. Kids fight with each other. If this goes so bad, Old Mill is now dangerous. We will be locked.

Both Old Mill schools are turning to a Marathon but a Nightmare too. This is why you should leave this school. Kids fight with each other. If this goes so bad, Old Mill is now dangerous. We will be locked in places far from here. The reason why these schools are not good anymore is thanks to the Chief.

Note - It seems the southern and western part of the Old Mill cluster who attend South Shore Elementary and Millersville Elementary will not be going to Old Mill Middle South (OMMS) starting in 2024 and instead will go to the Old Mill Middle North (OMMN) facility due to redistricting and construction of a new OMMS at Southgate/Old Mill Park near Glen Burnie. It appears students assigned to OMMN will then be moved to the CAT North location in the coming years but as of 2023, it is unknown if there will be a new building constructed or if the CAT North facility will instead be refurbished. See the AACPS website for updated information on redistricting and construction.

Also note (as of 2023) the OMMN is the northern AACPS location for the International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet program, but this is a school-wide curriculum. OMMS has the STEM magnet program and only students who get into that magnet program may benefit from it, although some teachers indicated they try to spread some of the lessons to the whole school. It is a pure lottery to get into any of the magnet programs in AACPS, and not based on high ability or performance of applicants.

My child attended OMMS a couple years ago and did not have the best experience there. We found that although there were some great teachers, the quality of teachers was inconsistent. There were a lot of unruly kids and the management style of the teachers reflected this. We found the teacher in charge of the National Honors Society to be unprofessional. My child did enjoy the music program. It helps for parents to get involved.

This school has been a great place for my kids to go and learn, and the staff has been fantastic through the years.

I have three kids, 1 of which has already graduated and two of which are currently enrolled. All 3 of them have loved this school and the friends they have made here. Last year's remote schooling was rough as a parent, as I am sure it was for most of the other moms and dad's out there, but Old Mill was fantastic at making sure my children were still getting a great education. The teachers have all been willing to accommodate my kids on an individual level (like in needing extra help outside of class, and another needing accommodations for her IEP) and I can not be happier with how well i have seen them grow and devolve here at South Mill.

A great school with great staff, this is hands down one of the best middle schools in the area.

I have so many memories in this school since sixth grade. My counselor who I had for 3 years in middle school is very kind and respectful. My counselor always helping me resolve my problems and help me get through a bad day. She always helping me to maintain my grades and always say hello evey morning with a smile which always made my day when I came to school. The teachers are very helpful, kind and respectful. My teachers are always their fore if I ever needed help. The administrators are very helpful, kind, and respectful.

The teachers do not respond to calls and emails. They do not care whether or not the students succeed. The supervisors/office staff do not seem to do anything about it.

The worst school district we have ever been stationed in. I have NEVER met a more uncaring group of teachers/staff. The violence in this school is also out of control. We pulled our kids to start homeschooling today. Enough is enough.

Students are being bullied and teachers and staff do nothing about it and the lack of air flow through the locker rooms and gym and nothing is done about kids being beat up everyday

We had some great experiences, but when my daughter suffered a brain aneurysm my grandson's grades tanked. Then his saxophone disappeared. He's over in high school now, but it's difficult to recover without assistance.

Bad for students with learning disabilities - but apparently it's ok for "general education" students. My son has an IEP and unless you push and remind teachers of his accommodations, they don't get implemented. If it's an encore (elective) class or after school program, forget it! There are a few great teachers (Ms. Lapati/Science is fantastic!!), but unfortunately they get overshadowed by teachers who have no control over their noisy classrooms. End note: Principal Page is fantastic and very responsive, but of course can only do so much at the classroom level. Parents just need to stick together and be as involved as possible!

Some teachers are good and stick to their material and keep the students in check, reports my son. Most, however, at least in 6th grade this year are ineffective at keeping order in their classrooms. At least one teacher got so frustrated with noisy kids she told them to throw away the project they were working on and do a writing assignment instead. Another teacher dropped the ball on her after school class.

My 6th grade son has learned that being quiet and listening to the teacher doesn't matter because he gets punished along with the rest of the class for noisy, disrespectful kids who talk over the teacher. Even "good" teachers punish the entire class for a few misbehaving students. My son also has had a calculator and numerous pencils disappear from his desk and binder.

I absolutely love OMMSS. They've recently been implementing STEM into almost everything. I am actually in the STEM program and going into 7th grade. So far the teachers are amazing! The vice principal is fairly scary, but he kind of has to be to do his job, so I understand and that's okay. All my friends love it too! I mean, it's still school so it kinda sucks, but for school, it's awesome! And I actually feel like I'm learning something!!!

Omms is absolutly terrible there is only certain teachers who actually cared about me and my grades. They don't take care of problems unless someone threatens them. 2 out of 11 teacher actually care. The bullying there is bad. I got bullied every year i went there. I can't stand this school!!! If you care about your child do not send them to this school.

OMMS is absolutely horrible. I was a student there all three years. I can say that it was neither academically challenging nor did it have a friendly environment. The administration is terrible and ineffectual. The teachers I had were either very great or very incompetent. While the latter frustrated me very much, I still do not believe that teachers should be accountable for everything, b/c in some cases the students are clearly just not willing to put any sort of effort into it. The principal was the worst part about it. She came to OMMS the same time that I did. It seemed like OMMS was a much better school before she came, and it just got worse as time passed. I blame a lot of the school's mediocrity on her. I can really only compare her to a fascist dictator. She implemented a variety of arbitrary rules, such as the elimination of all school bells, which allowed teachers to say that a student was late to class whenever. Apparently tardiness is subjective. All her "efforts" to better the school failed miserably. She simply doesn't understand what the school needs, and she attacks all of the wrong problems. I was glad to finally leave and go to OMHS.

these commen told about my school are not all lies but most of these things people say are their own opinion, but when you can sit there and say that this is a bad school and it is dangerous is not true. I am going to the 8th grade and im fine. parents how would you kow what really happens at school, yeah your child may come and say something, but how do you know what really happened. Could your child have started an incident? I don't understand how you can say the guidence counselor didn't care when they may have help a child or if they didn't mean to seem to not care. Oe more thing parents please please do not bring up issues of bullying when it has nothing to do with the school. Bullying is terrible, but this website is so that we know more about the SCHOOL. Thank this will be my 3rd and last year at this chool and i am glad it is at old mill middle south......... HOME of the PATRIOTS
