Great Salt Bay Community School

I have two children who have been at this school for a total of nine years combined. Each of their teachers has been committed to keeping them challenged and advancing. The administration is friendly and engaging. Many parents volunteer to read or participate in various projects increasing the community feel to the school. The music program is outstanding. We are very happy to have this treasure of a school in our neighborhood.

The feeling in this school is cold. There is also a feeling of "cliques" where some teachers seemed favored over others. A few teachers seem to have run of the school. My child only went to this school for a few years but I could not get out of there fast enough. The special education department is stretched thin (multiple parents told me their children where not getting the services they needed and had made no progress in years) and the GT program is a joke for a few "favorite" students. I hope the administration (which seems to be lacking in leadership skills) takes a step back and takes a hard look at themselves. They say they are there for the children but in my experience that was the least of their priorities.

The teachers principal and staff are invested and very caring about the students / I believe that is what sets this school apart!

We moved here for this school and amazing community. We looked at top private schools around NE not worried about cost yet found this public school and active community towards the school to exceed all the others. I love how the children, teachers, administration and parents work with so much involvement, not just for their own children, but to raise children in the community the right way for a better future. We have not had any bad experiences with this school. I love how it is an eclectic but amazing group of families who respect and support the others. The school is so committed to each child I feel. The music, sports, and academics are all excellent and there for each child to reach his or her highest potential. In the past we paid over 8k per child to attend other private schools in a different area to only have one very sub par experience. This school has brought both of my children from being in a low academic percentage to straight A's due to the schools teaching methods and care. A huge turn around for both in confidence, growth, respect and knowledge. We could not ask for a better school all around!!

GSB is an outstanding school for the small town and small student population that it serves. There is an energy and vibrancy that is immediately apparent after just one visit. Special Ed receives as much attention as does gifted and talented and "specials" such as music and art. There is a reason why families move just to be in this school district!

There are some wonderful teachers at GSB and then there are some that are obviously biding their time until retirement. I think the school was better 5 or 6 years ago than it is now. Academics are okay, but not great. They do have a pretty wonderful music program and the band and chorus are great.

Both of our children recently completed their K-8 education at GSB. It was an exceptional experience for all of us. The administration, former and current, actively sought/seek excellence from all of the staff, custodians to teachers. Are there a few duds? Yes. Any large staff is bound to be less than perfect, and human nature means that we all cannot see eye to eye despite good intentions. It is worth noting that a number of men are on the staff, something sorely lacking in many primary schools

Administration is very out of touch with the rest of the school. Many of the teachers do do a good job, but there are some put little effort into teaching and try to fill class time with busywork. Phonics are extremely lacking in lower grades. Music, art and gifted/talented focus only on specific favorite students and many others get little out of these programs. Also, in the review saying the administration is good is from five years ago, when the administration had all different people then it does now.
