My experience at Hyde School left lasting emotional and psychological impacts that I’m still working through today. While the school presents itself as a character-based, values-driven program, the environment I experienced felt more controlling than supportive. Many of the practices, in my opinion, blurred the line between discipline and emotional manipulation.

During my time there, I often felt isolated, shamed, and unsupported in ways that did not foster personal growth, but rather left me feeling diminished. I witnessed and experienced group dynamics that prioritized public confrontation over private guidance, and a culture that seemed to reward conformity and punishment more than genuine understanding or empathy.

Looking back, I would not recommend this school to families seeking a nurturing or psychologically safe environment. I strongly encourage anyone considering Hyde to research carefully, seek out diverse firsthand accounts, and evaluate whether the school’s philosophy aligns with your values and your child’s emotional well-being.

This is my personal experience and opinion based on my time there.

Attending HYDE has been an enriching and transformative experience for my son. It is more than an educational institution; it is a place where students are nurtured, empowered, and encouraged to excel not only academically but also personally. The dedication of the faculty and staff at HYDE to the well-being and development of their students is truly commendable. They go above and beyond to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters growth and self-discovery.

I want to express my profound gratitude because, in many ways, HYDE saved my son. The care and guidance he received here have been instrumental in his personal and academic growth. The values instilled, the friendships formed, and the opportunities presented at HYDE have played a pivotal role in shaping his character and future prospects.

As a parent, I am well aware of the importance of extracurricular activities in a student's holistic development. HYDE has been exemplary in providing a wide range of extracurricular activities, which have not only enriched my son's life but have also contributed significantly to his overall well-being. These activities are essential in nurturing talents, building confidence, and teaching valuable life skills.

The character culture and academic support for my son as well as community for me is priceless. I am very grateful for the Hyde process.

I think the homework and the homework support is reasonable. Homework is a challenge for my son. Mostly in organizing his time and focus but also just handing it in! It's clear the teachers care and help him organize his time to meet deadlines. His grades have been improving.

My son has basic integrity. But, as the world is now there are distractions and temptations. He has gone off the rails a few times. The faculty knows him well and is right there with him. There are many conversations and there is accountability (shoveling snow.) I can see that this is building an inner strength and understanding of right and wrong, even compassion.

Remarkable school that helps students achieve their unique potential. The school works with both students and families to better understand themselves, develop strengths and succeed in a complex world. As our son grows older his appreciation for his Hyde experience becomes more clear. He and we greatly benefited from Hyde's character-building foundation. All of us are grateful to Hyde's wonderful faculty and staff and are proud to have had the opportunity to spend 3 years with Hyde.

An excellent school for families in crisis. There is a demanding academic curriculum, with participation in sports, performing arts, and community service required. My child became captain of the cross-country team and was accepted to her top choice college. Still more important, she benefited from Hyde's character-building curriculum--gaining the self-discipline, courage, and confidence she needs to succeed as an independent adult. Hyde's family education program brought the two of us closer together and strengthened our bond, taught me the skills I needed to parent more effectively, and encouraged me to make meaningful changes in my own life--for which I am very grateful. Fantastic faculty and staff. I'm proud to be a Hyde alumni parent.

Hyde's family education program brings parents into close contact with teachers, staff, coaches, etc. I've found them uniformly excellent and inspirational--almost everyone who works at Hyde lives on campus and takes at least some daily meals with students in the dining hall. The children of fac/staff with kids attend Hyde, too. As a parent, I feel most strongly about who is interacting with and influencing my child--and the Hyde team makes me feel great in this regard.

Students are given a reasonable amount of homework and a reasonable amount of time to complete it. There are supervised study halls for those who need help. My child learned excellent study skills and time management that helped her to succeed in college.

Quite simply, ethics and character-building are part of the curriculum and a daily on-going part of discussion in every aspect of Hyde life.

My son graduated from Hyde in May after 2 years and we were very satisfied with the level of academic rigor, character development and family engagement. He thrived in the structure, we are all challenged to learn and grow and are better humans as a result of all the support, challenge and learning at Hyde. It takes a special school to focus on attitude as much as aptitude and to really challenge all involved to be their best in mind and spirit. I am eternally grateful to Hyde and know my son was able to find himself and actualize his unique potential as a result. After looking at many boarding schools that only focus on image and ignore the whole child we were so happy to find Hyde.

Do not believe the hype. Absolutely the worst place to send your kids. If you wish to be brainwashed and forced to comply to a strangers (with little to no credentials I might add) standards, want to totally distance yourself from your loved one and allow some yuppie salesmen to fleece your bank account... "that place" will do it for ya!!!

Although our son was the student at Hyde, my husband and I came away from the experience with a completely different perspective of our our own lives. Our son received an excellent academic education that propelled him into college, but the lifelong principles of character, curiosity, courage, integrity and leadership are what we see on a daily basis. These principles are modeled at Hyde in EVERY aspect of the school, EVERY day. A good kid that could really be great, he was (and still is, even though he's in college) supported and challenged by teachers that truly believed in his best. This is not an easy task. Our son came to Hyde after many years of complacency in our lives. The work of building a life takes time and committment. Hyde was committed to our family from day 1. I often read in the newspaper about kids making choices and parents looking the other way. You only get once shot to do this the right way. I'm so glad our family found Hyde School. We know our son has the tools he needs on his journey and our family has the connection we had hoped to have. I highly recommend Hyde School to all families!
