The math department is horrible. My child learned nothing in 7th or 8th grade except how to watch Kahn Academy to learn the math that the teachers didn't teach. The lessons are not engaging, but just copying off the board a few problems each day. As with every other course at AL, kids learn because they work their butts off and their parents help and/or pay for tutoring. Don't think this is on the teachers.
The English department is also a joke. They used to have great English teachers, but most of the good teachers quit when they can. They can't spell, can't write essays, and don't have strong English vocabularies. Yes, their test scores are good, because they are good readers, but that's not enough. Ask them to write an essay or spell any basic English words and you'll be disappointed.
In many of the classes, the teachers are lazy and do the minimum to prep for their lessons. The classes are rarely engaging, and they almost never require deep thinking. Kids are taught to memorize and regurgitate information, but they leave unprepared for area high schools.
The teachers and administration lead by fear. Teachers make fun of students in front of the class and threaten students with Saturday school if they fail to complete an assignment - regardless of the reason. Need extra time or help on a subject? Good luck. Let's hope you have a teacher who is willing to work with you. Most of them will tell you it's not their problem. Absent? Don't expect the teacher to email you back with any work. Many don't answer emails.
Don't be fooled by their test scores. My child also had high test scores. That does not mean that she was ready for high school. She hated school and couldn't wait to move on to a different environment where the teachers actually like teaching and want to motivate students.
Looking for a place where your child can get a high test score? This might be it. Want your child to learn life skills, important skills not on the state test, or just enjoy learning? Run from this school.
