Do not let your child go here unless you want them to get bullied, dismissed, and forgotten. I have been a student since kindergarten, and I have hated this school ever since. They do not care about your safety or any learning disabilities at all. Their IEP resources will dismiss your child and punish them for nothing, or even for standing up to bullying. I have been bullied, blamed, and punished for stuff I had never done, just because a child of a staff member did not want to get in trouble. They sweep everything under the rug to protect themselves and their own, not the students. Complaints go nowhere, reports are ignored, and the same problems keep happening year after year. Teachers and administrators pick favorites and refuse to listen when something is actually wrong. If you speak up, youre labeled as the problem instead of being helped. This place has completely destroyed my trust in adults who are supposed to protect kids, and I wouldnt wish this experience on anyone.

As a former teacher at this school, please do not send your students here! Especially if they have disabilities or need an IEP or 504. The special education resources at this charter school are severely lacking compared to any public school, and the teachers only stick around for 1-3 years. I was let go with absolutely no warning or explanation, much to the disappointment of the students. If you want stability and consistency for your students, look elsewhere. If you want an administrative staff that prioritizes school reputation over students discipline and livelihood, then sure, ESA is the school for you. But if you want a traditional education and attentive licensed teachers, look elsewhere. A majority of these teachers do not have licensure and are not working towards it. Good luck to all the poor kids who had to go through this place for their K-8 education.

I had high hopes when my child was accepted to Envision. Middle school has crushed all those hopes. Insanely high staff turnover, bullying, no concern for the social/emotional health of students, tiny classrooms, insensitive administrators, poor math curriculum, ineffective teaching methods, and inconsistent standards have all made Envision much less desirable than we were led to believe.

We have been at ESA for a few years and couldn't be happier with our experience. The administration, teachers, and support staff are all wonderful and create a safe and inviting learning environment for the kids. Our child has enjoyed their time at the school so far and educationally has exceeded our expectations. We feel very lucky our child gets to attend such a great school.

My grandchild attends ESA and has for 4 years now. Granted some of that time was during COVID with virtual learning. The creative use of computers was amazing as teachers avoided recording lectures to broadcast or assigning way too much paperwork. They met with the students in small groups daily and also in homeroom groups. Discussions, research, and problem solving activities kept the daily lessons at home from being brain killers. The expectations were reasonable and allowed students at home to be flexible on the timing of breaks and work times to suit their needs for focusing effectively. As a former teacher, I was extremely impressed with the educational activities and the work teachers put into finding solutions to the educational crisis created by the pandemic.
These same qualities have been shown to my grandchild in the classroom as well. As a student who is on a 504 Plan (accommodations for students with some types of learning issues), we have found that the teachers are eager and willing to make those environmental changes needed to help with learning. Examples: Some students need earphones to help block out noise, or a special placement to be able to see the whiteboard, or access to a stress ball to help them keep focusing on a lesson. I also know of instances when they have intervened to help students solve what could have turned into a bullying situation. The school counselors also help with social skills and all types of student needs. We are very happy with this school. The only thing I would like to see is more time for students to read books and discuss them with each other during the school day. Overall we are very pleased and feel this is a high quality school.

Envision has been such a wonderful school for my children. They are thriving in the project based learning and STEAM focus. The teachers & staff are caring, kind, motivating and make the days enjoyable for the kids. I love the early start/end times and the overall structure of the days there.

Envision Science Academy does not understand students with disabilities or learning differences. The teachers do not have proper training in this area and students do not get what they need in order to be successful. I do not recommend this school if you have a child with special needs or learning disabilities. They will not get the services they need or deserve. Nor will they be supported within the regular education classroom or other classrooms in the building such a specials.

Multiple bullying complains that were never dealt with by administration. The teachers we've had are fantastic but teacher retention is horrible and it has everything to do with administration. There shouldn't be so many teachers leaving mid-year for different schools.

ESA has continued to be a wonderful school. Small class sizes, involved teachers, a huge variety of activities and learning exercises are the rule. Teacher retention is comparable to any school but here, the community of teachers, parents, administration, and students keep the environment fun, educational, consistent, and comfortable. The education here is great, the class sizes are small, and the teachers are phenomenal.

Envision Science Academy is incredible. The administration, office staff, and teachers are talented, accessible, and caring. This school, in one year, has already proven it's worth with an A grade on EOGS and a majority of happy children and parents. Project learning, recess, and dedicated teachers abound I highly recommend Envision.

We just started this year and ha e spent years in public school. The public schools in NC are really not good for the most part. I really enjoy that my kids go to a school with well behaved kids and parents who care. I feel my kids are learning and they say "the day goes fast". That is a great compliment from 4th graders! I did not give a 5 because I need to see their EOGs as this school does not share as much info. All fourth grade teachers are new which I was a little worried about but it has been fine.

A facebook post was just written to ask everyone to flood greatschools.com with positive comments to drown out and marginalize those of us with serious issues and concerns about Envision and to improve the "star" rating. That doesn't make all the concerns any less valid.

Bottom line for me is that the school can't keep teachers, teachers don't get the teaching or professional resources they need, adminisitration and board are highly inconsistent and are focused only on the new building and parents are incredibly cliquey, especially if they are friends with the board. The sole PR and financial focus for the last 2 years has been the new building, and it seems that it will continue.

Our board loves to brag about all they do, and have done, to get a building, but if you go to a board meeting, you'll learn (vaguely, as budget is always an unclear topic) they have taken out a MASSIVE loan, from the bank where a board member works, and have to focus the next many years to pay that back with the money received from the state to teach our kids. If the loan is more than the current rent, do they have less money to spend in the school?

As of now, teachers and kids are continuously lacking in supplies, materials because of the inappropriate shift in focus to construction. How will it get any better now that ESA has to pay back a massive construction loan each year? How will that impact, or worsen, the education in our school and the already concerning lack of supplies, materials and resources in our building. We can't afford to be "house poor" in the new building when ESA can barely seem to keep the lights on, as it is now,

Magellan and Endeavor were each in our temp building before us and for a lot longer than us, and have consistently been "A" schools with kids making growth. They also raised separate money for their building. We haven't.

ESA had that "A" report card distinction in year one, but lost it in year 2, and I feel we'll drop even more in year 3. Far too many teachers keep quitting, mid year, or not comimg back, because they are fed up with no training, no resources, no supplies and intrusive and non supportive board members and administrators.

We are a STEAM school with very little technology or computers. The school must shift its focus to be on the quality of its teaching and teachers, and provides appropriate resources and support.

I've had great interactions with most of the teachers my daughters have had. Turnover in the beginning was a little rough, but believe most of the time, teachers have the kids' best interest in mind.
Some of the early on teachers have a bit of heart burn because of some political things that may have happened with early administration (as parents we were not privy to that info), but I am of the opinion that my kids were not adversely affected by that and continue to flourish with the attention of their teachers.

This is our 2nd year and my girls are flourishing. Thank you to the school teachers and administrative staff for making us all feel welcome and part of a family.
Great job, especially after only one full year.
Very proud of all the staff.
The teachers at ESA are there because they want to teach and be with children, it's not just a job.
It is a hardship that our commute is long, but worth it for the private school type of education.
UPDATE 1/2017 I am still very happy with this school for my daughters. Commute is still rough for us, but still worth it.

We have someone in upper grades who is not nice, and they aggressively address it.
There is education for the kids regarding the whole subject (what bullying is, how to deal with it as individuals, when and how to let leadership know, etc.)

I am writing this review from my experience in the lower grades, so I cant speak of the higher grades.

Pros: small class sizes, engaged parents, for the most part very nice and well-behaved kids, very friendly front office staff

Cons: high teacher turn over, at least in the lower grades a lot of unqualified & over-worked teachers, a schedule that seems unnecessarily jammed packed , no real differentiating of instruction, no small group instruction (its very beneficial especially for younger students, but almost impossible without an assistant and in such a small classroom), terribly crowded recess situation, a curriculum that is not that much different than found in most public schools, very little hands-on materials, not very supportive administration, a lot of disorganization in the classroom, lack of resources & in general a lot of trial & error.

In a nutshell my daughters school experience at Envision has not been what we thought it would be when we found out we won the lottery. I am actually convinced it would have been a much more positive and a less stressed experience for the entire family had we just sent her to our neighborhood school. The new building definitely leaves room for hope that things may improve but if I could choose again I would not have sent her to Envision and we will most likely transfer back to public school next year.

Love Envision and the dedication of the teachers.One of the most awesome teachers drives 30 miles every day back and forth because she loves teaching here so much. I have a 5th grader and a 7th grader. Both are doing well and if there is ever something, teachers are very willing to help. 9/ 10 times I get a response within a day .
I love that they have a Math 1 class in 7th grade to accommodate the advanced students.
Regarding the teachers that are leaving: this school might not be a good fit for every teacher, since it is steam and project based. Also, it is a relatively new school which obviously has to go through some growing pains.
Regarding the new building: communication could have been better, but they are also dependent on the contractors info.
And regarding the requests for money and volunteers: you should see how much extra money schools in Cali need. They don't even have art teachers in a lot of schools there. Charter schools are dependent on state funding, which has only gone down the past few years. I consider myself lucky that my kids are in such a great school with small class sizes!!!

We have been at the school since the day it opened and could not be happier! Now in our 3rd year, we have 2 kids at the school who absolutely love the school, environment, teachers and staff. While there have been ups and downs during the first year (as would happen with any new school), ESA has found its way! The school is solid and the teaching style and projects are fabulous! We wouldn't have our children anywhere else.

I had high hopes for this school and while there are definitely good teachers and a somewhat solid curriculum (although that's only my guess, as parents are mostly kept in the dark about the curriculum), the school won't meet its potential until a change in leadership happens. The school needs to be led by a principal who is positive, present and encouraging. The atmosphere still seems rather tense, the parent-teacher communication is very minimal and so is the communication from the school itself. Most charters make it a point to really create a communal feeling. Newsletters carry a positive message rather than mainly focus on the negative. Some positive words from the teacher on the weekly newsletter would be a nice touch, too. All these little things matter. It's only the school's 3rd year, but by now more of these things should have been in place but that takes a principal who inspires. I really don't blame the teachers. They work hard and also work 10 more instructional days, plus 30 minutes longer every day than they would at other schools. That's a tall order, for the kids & teachers alike. If you are zoned for a mediocre public school, ESA might be an improvement, but if not, I would give it thorough thought. We came from a very good capped public school and I wish we would have just stayed. Yes, some of the projects are neat, but it all sounds better than it really is, as the school still lacks supplies left & right to really live up to its promises. Their scores have also drastically dropped. So overall it's been more of a disappointment and one can only hope that change will happen to improve this school and create a really positive environment for our children.

We have been at Envision since the day it opened. We expected that by joining a new school, there would be growing pains, but we feel very fortunate to have found a school that challenges our kids to think critically. Our kids are thriving and it feels as though after two years of growing pains, ESA is poised to take off in year three! With the increased student numbers in year three, the school has now added some fantastic teachers and has significantly increased the amount of support staff to hopefully create a stable and supportive environment for years to come.

We have not only attended ESA since it opened but also strongly followed it's conception. My daughter has thrived here. She LOVES going to school and never wants to miss a day. A lot to be said, because she was not like that about preschool. I love the community of strong parents at our school along with innovative teaching approaches. They implement an out of the box approach to common teaching methods. The hands on learning coupled with the project based learning can't be beat! I really like how they collaborate and span the core idea over all the classes. Example- they are learning about weather: science they may do experiments on how weather works, math they may look at patterns in weather and do calculations to predict, ELA they may write weather reports and read related stories/books. They don't just learn material from a page in a book...they EXPERIENCE it! This information will truly be learned because of this method not to mention is incredibly fun! Of course, no school is one size fits all, nor should it be. So there will always be people who are unhappy or have an unfortunate experience with their particular child. As for the majority of parents in my particular grade go, we love the school and are very invested in helping our teachers and community. GO EAGLES!

I am a teacher and will be leaving at the end of the year. Teachers are not supported by administration or the board. I have spend more money in the classroom this year than I have ever spent. We are a STEAM school but lack the supplies and technology that are needed in the classroom.
Project based learning is amazing but not everything can be done with a project. The students are getting behind in core subjects.

Not a good school. They had trouble finding teachers for their second year and settled for warm bodies that were willing to accept positions. After three months of not learning anything and poor communication we decided to switch schools.

My child has been at this school since the opening. She is thriving ,blossoming and is challenged; we look forward to her siblings attending this school with such a healthy environment. The teachers and administration are wonderful. Yes, administration does interact with the students (I've seen it since I volunteer at the school often). Also, there is weekly communication to the parents by the principal and weekly newsletters and homework assignments posted online by each grade. My daughter's teaching team communicates effectively, as well. Again, I volunteered last year and often this year. I am unsure what the comments about excessive turnover are about. We came from a traditional public school where the turnover was extremely high. As parents, we will never know if these teachers were performance issues or not! However, the turnover is not an alarming amount. I hope the parent who posted on Dec 4 spoke with the principal instead of complaining out in social media without taking the appropriate chains of communication.

Poor administration---harsh, uncaring, unprofessional, uncommunicative, and blatant disregard for parental concerns. Major issue is sloppy record-keeping (lacks proper forms: parents asked to write important documentation on notebook paper; inaccuracies in attendance records: first two months, my child counted present every day despite having 3 absences; suddenly absences began to be recorded in October).

Academics not what is promised. A few excellent teachers cant make up for the constant disorder from staff turnover, inconsistent application of the curriculum, lack of parent-teacher-student communication. Confusion about the structure of classes, i.e. inconsistencies in which teacher leads which subject on a given day (ex. Social studies, grammar). When my child is absent, makeup work is often not provided by teachers (one teacher even gave my child an F for an assignment he missed when out with an excused absence). The project-based component of the school is more confusing than beneficial because teachers do not give proper guidance to students and parents are given little information about what projects students are working on (requirements, rubric, content, etc). Sometimes it feels like parents are not considered partners in the educational process of their own children. Were kept in the dark A LOT.

The STEAM component is NOT properly provided. We were especially attracted by the art component, but the art aspect never materialized. Children do get an art special, but its really dry and lackluster. For example, instead of a still life being provided for students to paint, theyre given a picture from the internet to copy. Expensive and hard-to-find art supplies mandated by the teacher have yet to be used. There is no technology special at all. Not enough computers for every student to use during project-based learning. However, excellent special in Mandarin Chineseteacher is phenomenal!

In summary, this school has been a huge disappointment. Searching elsewhere for a school for my child. Public schools looking better to me every day.

Very disappointed in this school. Envision claims to have a STEAM curriculum and to be a project-based school, but I've seen very little evidence of effective application of either. As a former educator, I'm familiar with how both STEAM and PBL should work and my child has not been experiencing the benefits of either. In fact, he has often talked about being "stressed out" because everything's chaotic. I understand that this is only Envision's second year, but there are so many issues to be worked out here (which I don't foresee the administrators actually taking any action to work out) that really I'm beginning to think public school would be a better option. Envision has the potential to be a great school, but the flaws in its curriculum combined with ineffective leadership by the administrators are a major stumbling block. Plus, I haven't seen either administrator smile or interact positively with the students. This might be a small thing to some parents, but it is a concern to me since it is up to the administrators to create a positive, healthy learning environment for the children, and to model respect and kindness so the students will emulate these behaviors in their own interactions.

This school focuses on project based learning and the teachers do an excellent job of incorporating those ideals into the curriculum in a fun way that the students love and can easily learn from while still differentiating between the level of ability of the students in a way that doesn't single anyone out and makes everyone feel involved.

This is our first year at the school and our experience has been nothing but positive. The teachers are excellent., the administration is very supportive, and the parents are very involved. My daughter loves the school and is learning much more this than she did last year though she was at one of the best public schools in Wake County last year. The school is growing and only getting better as time goes on.

This is my child's first year at ESA. She is in fourth grade. She LOVES everything about the school. She is very happy with her teachers, classmates and assignments. I am very impressed with the curriculum taught. The teachers and administration are doing a terrific job. We love it so much, we hope our other child will get in next year. We also drive a bit to go here. It is worth it!! The only negative thing I notice is not the school or staff, but rather some parents continue to cause drama and fail to recognize any humanity in the staff or that they are people doing the best they can with a new and evolving school. They complain All the time. They must have forgot the location they came from and why. They should go back if not happy. The teachers and administration are devoted, underrated and underpaid. They have lives and can not serve the parents to their liking of 100 percent of their waking hours. Although, I have seen them bend over backwards to appease and fix every complaint. Some just like a storm. We are very happy with ESA!

With the younger students I would like to see the homework come home in a weekly packet rather than nightly. I think that some nights they are more motivated to do homework and some nights they they just need a break. By turning in the packet weekly this gives the younger students some flexibility.

I have learned in life that you can believe only about half of what you see and nothing that you hear! I only write this review to help offset the negative reviews that I can only imagine are written by parents who have left the school and for some reason have ill will towards the school and the administration, staff or board. To those I say make peace with your decision and move on. With that said, this is my first year at ESA and overall we have been very happy with our transition. My student is adjusting to the new way of learning (hands on, project based) and seems to really enjoy all of the classes. I love that in all grades the students are assessed and taught at different levels (math and reading). I believe that this is beneficial to those that need more help with a concept and to those that can move on a little more quickly. There are going to be hiccups along the way but that is true with any school new or old. There have been some negative comments surrounding the integrity of the school, teachers, administration, board, etc. Since I am none of these I cannot and will not try to assume their role, what they are planning for the future, what they are working on presently. I can only hope that they are working towards building a wonderful school for my child and many others. I encourage anyone reading these reviews because they are considering enrollment into ESA that they tour the school, meet the administration, and make their own informed decision about whether or not this is a good environment for them and their student(s).

Envision encourages honesty and integrity by creating a community within the school for the children to feel safe. This safety allows the children to open up and learn real life, long lasting friendship. The disciplinary policy is slightly vague to protect all children and take matters on a case by case basis, making sure any punishment (if need be) fits the child and the situation. This is comforting as a parent.

We have watched Envision grow from small meetings to what it is today and it is inspiring. Thankfully, our son was accepted via the lottery this year. He is in second grade. We LOVE the school. His second grade team is engaging, fun and always helpful to both parents and students. They learn the common core curriculum as required by the state, they do it in a way that is hands on and thought provoking. They encourage thinking outside the box. We don't know if this is true for every grade but my son has field trips monthly. The kids love this!
The administration is wonderful. They're friendly, informative and send out weekly newsletters, both the principal and assistant principal, highlighting different areas. They know the children and talk with them. They respond to e-mails quickly as well.
Our son raves about the school. He loves being able to change classes like his big middle school brother. He likes that his teachers specialize in their subjects. He knows that he is in a group based off his reading level and has corresponding spelling words (differentiated learning) and he really likes that. He knows that hard work can make him in a higher level too.
The student to teacher ratio of 18:1 is very ideal. Currently they have 3 classes per grade and they will max out at 4 classes, for a total of 72 students per grade. The teachers really know your child and knows the quirks that help make them learn to the best of their ability. It really is a small school and the teachers and families get to know each other.
*This is the school's second year in operation and also in a temporary location. They hope to be in their permanent location in Wake Forest for the 2016-2017 school year. Being in a temporary location does make things more difficult in some ways and good in other ways. They were able to move the middle school into modulars recently, freeing the classrooms back to the specials teachers. The tight quarters had the administrators and teachers thinking outside the box and working very close together to make the situation the best. We think if you come in knowing that this is still a school and that not everything is perfect anywhere but they work tirelessly to do their absolute best despite criticism, you will be extremely happy with your decision. We surely are.

There is not enough great things to say about the teachers at Envision. Envision is growing, there are new teachers onboard but they are professional, engaging and the best of the best. Our son adores his teachers, as do we. We value all the hard work and dedication that they show each and everyday. The teachers at Envision were born to teach, it's their passion. You can see this everyday.

Our son has the perfect amount of homework for his level. Some may think it's too much but we came into this school knowing the high benchmarks the school hopes to achieve with their STEAM mission.

We have had a great experience at this school, coming from a homeschool/private school background. The teachers are very supportive and enthusiastic about their students' learning, and the administrative staff is responsive to parents' concerns. The children enjoy going to school each day!

The first year 4 teachers left as well the principal, other teachers did not return. This year 2 teachers have left mid school year. There are numerous complaints filed with DPI, board members are extremely secretive , as well as not staying with in there boundaries, berating teachers in front of students and making policies that benefit there children first and foremost. There is an extreme failure in communication, I found out my child's teacher had resigned once it had already happened by my child no email sent to parents. There are different rules for different children. Over all extremely upset with the board and some of the administration. The teachers are great and genuine but the tension is obvious. I've already begun looking for an alternative for my child. Bottom line until problems are addressed and resolved I would not recommend this school and I hope to have my child out of there by November the latest

The proposed program is a wonderful concept. However, this takes leadership. As of right now, the school no longer offers STEAM as a class and does not offer any technology program. The promise of extra curricular activites has also not happened. The new principal is not engaging with the students and or parents. The classroom websites are NOT kept up to date, ie, most information is last school years and/or are under construction. We should be heavy in technology if we are preparing for the future for these students. The public schools at least offer technology class! It is the end of the 1st quarter and he has yet to visit the classrooms to introduce himself to the students. THIS school needs LEADERSHIP desperately to carry out their mission statement. If it could accomplish this you would have a top notch school!

The teachers are excellent at teaching and have great compassion for students. They are very responsive to questions and concerns and also provide excellent feedback on students performance and expectations.

My son is currently in second grade at Envision and we love the school, teachers and administration. Envision Science Academy is an excellent STEAM Charter school and I encourage parents to apply for their K-8 children who would benefit from the schools hands on learning approach and would enjoy having different teachers for different core subjects.
