This is a terrible school. Not only did MCA not implement accommodations that were written in the IEP, but the school abused one of the accommodations by suspending the student every other day! Absolutely no communication to the parents and straight up lying to us.

This school is extremely disappointing. The administration is unresponsive and disorganized and the teachers lack classroom control, creating a chaotic learning environment. Most concerning, IEPs are not consistently followed, leaving students without the support they need. Overall, the school fails to provide a structured or supportive place for students to succeed. Would not recommend.

This school has only started getting better once the old principle left, other than that this was still one of the worst places to have an education at because the staff mostly dont care and the curriculum is overall just bland at best. The few teachers that are good at this school are Mr DiMaggio and Mr Malinovsky, Sidberry and Mr Neil, but the three mentioned after DiMaggio left. And its understandable why

If I could give this school zero stars I would. From the day we went to open house to my childs last day which was 2 and half months, was all horrible. The teachers have nasty attitudes, the deans and principals let them talk to kids however they want. Horrible place. Do not send your children this school.

Some people might think that this school is a sister-school to the queens grant lower School, but this could be further than the truth, the teachers are inexperienced/not trained properly and they will look at your child saying they're gonna fail in life, will be hell trying to communicate anything to, ignore complaints, have harsh punishments, will make older kids seem like evil people, and will just have a bad experience overall

i used to go to this school it sucked they DRESS COADED YOU SOCKS AND SHOES and i was a student with adhd and the 5 o 4 plan was never put to use it was completely disreguarded and teachers did nothing about students that were acting out and / or misbehaving!!!!!

When I attended MCA I endured several counts of bullying and harassment from several students. When I brought it up to the deans they played it off like it was nothing or just completely ignored it. When I was in the second grade at the school I was limited to using the bathroom only 2 times the whole day. Like god this is a second grader we are talking about a second grader holding it for eight hours. I tried to connect with my teachers but they just ignored me. The only good thing I can say about this god forsaken school is the front office ladies who helped me through my constant nosebleeds even when we didnt even have a school nurse. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL FOR ANYONE

My sons have attended MCA from inception. We have had a great experience with a lot of support from teachers and all of the staff. My one son has ADHD and the speech therapist, teachers, social worker, and Deans have been amazing with their support! My youngest son even had special help from his former kindergarten teacher when transitioning to first grade. His current Dean has supported us. She called me personally when he had emotional issues at the start of this year and even loaned us a school jacket until we were able to order the proper sweatshirts for the school year. This staff goes above and beyond and I appreciate them tremendously. It takes a village to raise children and they constantly extend support and are for sure part of my childrens tribe. I am thankful!

The teachers and staff are highly qualified, they have been hard workers during this hard pandemic times, they have many resources both virtually and in person, the logistics to drop off, pick up the kids and materials its amazingly coordinated, Im thankful and would forever recommend this school.

MCA has a strong vision to develop Moral Focus into the curriculum and incorporates it into assignments and the daily activities of the students. In addition to getting a great education it is comforting to know that priority is given to teaching our scholars how to treat people well and have respect for others as well as themselves.

The principal has had years of experience starting schools and developing them into strong fortresses of education for scholars. She has a heart for the school and for the students like I have not seen before. It is a blessing to be part of Matthews Charter.

There are many outlets for students to grow on their own levels. There are opportunities for intervention for students who need more support or work in certain areas and also support for students who need more of a challenge and outlets to advance further with what they are learning.

We have never had a problem but I do know that the situations I am aware of where there was a problem with disrespectful behavior (and the school was given a chance to handle it before it was blown out of proportion) were handled promptly and appropriate measures were taken to resolve the problem quickly and effectively.

I cannot express the blessing that Matthews Charter has been to my son and our entire family. I have had firsthand of experience with a school that believes in my child and cares about the quality of education they provide. No school is perfect and if you are looking for perfect you wont find it. What you will find is a staff and teachers who care and are involved in the day to day lives of your children. You will find a desire for parent involvement to make the school a better place every year. And you will find a place to plug in and make an investment in your child and be involved with the great things the school is doing. It takes a village. And at Matthews Charter your child will grow in character and integrity because of the people who take the time to make them a priority.

I had high hopes of Matthews Charter but unfortunately my experience is been very poor. Teachers need to be educated in professionalism and how to respond with parents. The leadership also needs this training as well. Its unfortunate because at the end of the day its the children who are being let down.

Mrs. Moran never responds to parent requests. I have left her multiple messages and never received a response back from her. In dealing with IEP issues and contacting NHA Corporate, I never received a call from her to discuss the issues. I am very displeased with the level of professionalism and lack of interaction from Mrs. Moran. The deans are also unresponsive and unprofessional as well.

The school is not in compliance with state regulations regarding requesting testing to determine if an IEP is needed for students. The school by NC law is required to test and complete IEP requests within 90 days of the parents written request.

My son attended Matthews charter for middle school as part of the first 6th grade class when the school opened. During the three school years our experience was marginal overall. I will say that it was a good social experience for my son because he made a lot of friends and the kids truly cared for each other. The school is made up of children who are driven to School every day and in large part have parents that care about them and their educational experience.

While there were a handful of very good teachers, We often had adversarial interactions with The larger and inexperienced teacher population as we pushed them to ensure that our son received a solid education. There were literally gross oversights and a flavor of ignorance. They clearly leverage this strategy to save money but they do provide a Dean for the middle school and other grade levels. I guess this is their attempt to provide more guidance for the green teacher population. We leveraged the dean on numerous occasions in order to rectify A variety of situations that occurred. Ultimately we learned that the dean was not trustworthy. She would give us lipservice in person or over the phone and very seldom follow through unless a multitude of parents were involved and they worried about legal implications. They provide way too much latitude for the inexperienced teachers and do not truly provide the level of guidance and oversight required for this model. Overall, the dean for middle school ruled with an iron fist and this really affected school morale overall. She does not have the level of sophistication and finesse necessary for the role of Dean. Many of the children acted out because they did not appreciate the empty threats (they thought were real) and the way they were being treated.

I suppose this review makes you wonder where the principal is in all of this? Sadly, she rules from her ivory tower and seldom interacts with the parents or school population. She is out front for some school meetings or events but that is all show. Her availability is presented as so limited that it is extremely difficult to get a meeting. The meeting times are often a week or more out, well past and acceptable timeline for issue resolution. Her primary objective is to keep cost down so her bonus is as large as possible. It seems counterintuitive to have a principal that achieves higher pay through cost savings instead of higher educational standards.

I cannot in good faith recommend Matthews charter Academy to anyone and will leave you with this warning. If you are in the situation that we were and your child is going to have a poor social experience at a neighborhood school, then this may be an option to consider. Outside of that, there is no educational value associated with a childs attendance at the school.

After being in the school for a while, we began to notice that the teacher population was very inexperienced and also became acutely aware that there were many things that the school did not have (busing, a cafeteria, Gym equipment, adequate technology, etc.). What seemed to be issues that surround a school just starting out, were not that at all in reality. Charter schools do not operate the same way as a public school from the standpoint of how they utilize the money. They dont have as many guidelines around it, so in turn, they operate as a business. They find the cheapest teachers around (inexperienced) and cut corners wherever they can. They get the same amount of money per student that public schools do but much of the money does not actually go into the education of your child. Fundraisers that raise tens of thousands of dollars, or not leveraged properly or of the way that the parent population would like it to be. Meaning, not used in the best interest of the children but rather in ways that the Principal Or corporate organization prefers. In fact, following a large fundraiser the topped $30,000, the parentteacher organization was dissolved and became a function that the principal ran.

This is my daughter's second year at MCA. She absolutely loves it! What I love about the school is the constant communication between the school and the parent. I get emails from the teacher every week, and a weekly communication from the principle every Sunday night about the upcoming week. They are so organized and create such a great environment for learning. We are so lucky that my daughter got in when she did. Love Love Love this school!
