My review is based on my experience working at Monroe Charter. I tutored 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders in both math and reading.
The principal of the school, Dr. Camela Ford, is a caring and committed leader who has a clear mission for the school: help students develop good character and achieve academic excellence. She has established a culture where teachers, assistants, tutors, and social workers are all dedicated to achieving this mission. On a day-to-day level, Dr. Ford is a warm and friendly person who cares deeply about her students. On one occasion, I remember, Dr. Ford cried tears of joy when a student demonstrated he had learned to read. Very moving.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers I observed were among the most gifted educators Ive seen. They prepared engaging and creative lessons, and they instilled in students a love of learning. They could also tailor lessons for different types of learners: visual, kinesthetic, auditory, etc. As for the learning environment, the teachers were skilled at minimizing distractions, keeping students on task, and creating aesthetically pleasing classrooms.
At MCA, students also had ample opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Dr. Ford arranged field trips to Discovery Place Science Museum, Alexander Family Farms, and a local petting zoo. I thought these were well-chosen field trips, as they instilled in students greater appreciation of the natural world. In our tech-obsessed and high-pressure society, I think its important that students discover the therapeutic value of nature.

The students I worked with were, overall, well-mannered and motivated to learn. They had good camaraderie with each other and enjoyed working in groups. The halls were clean, and class transitions were orderly and quiet. There was occasional bickering between students, as you might expect, but teachers were quick to restore order and students were quick to put differences aside and mend fences.
Lastly, I must mention Ms. Judith Fitzpatrick, the schools office manager. Fitzpatrick is a kind and hardworking person who is happy to assist wherever needed. Whether its ironing tablecloths for a school dinner, mopping up a spill, or handling a high volume of phone calls, Fitzpatrick cheerfully does what needs to be done. She is the ultimate team player!
MCA is a great school that I am proud to have been a part of. 5 stars out of 5!

I had the experience of having my children in this school for over 4-years, with the impression of hoping my children would continue to grow. I saw the growth in my child with being in the class with Mrs Redd and no other teacher. I was horribly disturbed when I came to visit my child and the entire gymnasium smelt like marijuana and other drugs. Immediately I decided to withdraw my child and transfer her to a different school. I also had a hard time reaching Dr.Ford, she seemed to never be present when dealing with corrections or disciplinarian. I DO NOT RECOMMEND WORKING TO SENDING YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS SCHOOL.

Worst school ever! The kids of the staff bully other children and get away with it 1st graders and 6 then graders arent separated. My 1st grader got punched by a 7th grader. The teacher told me because the church is so small they cant keep them separated.
