My child attended 6th-8th grades at Carmel. All 3 years were met with disappointment for multiple reasons. Upper administration is terrible. They don't respond to email, messages or requests directly from a student for assistance (for the student directly or their parent needing assistance). Teacher turnover is high, with many classes being taught by long term subs for weeks to months. Also my child had teachers not fully licensed who had no business teaching at the middle school level. The haves bully, embarras, cut down, judge and demean the have nots. A group of kids (same ones year to year) distracted multiple different subjects all 3 years. Often the same kids who bullied others. There are no consequences for the problem kids. They protect the kids who come from affluent and locally known families. They don't want parent involvement unless it is financial support, helping to run the student store, EOG proctors, or buying things for teacher support week. They don't want you checking up on your child's learning or trying to deal with issues outside normal middle school issues.

Administration delegates everything to other people with a constant lack of follow up. I heard "I didn't know you were waiting on a response/follow up from me, I thought someone else was dealing with that, I never saw your email/got the message, or I thought that was dealt with/no longer an issue" multiple times throughout the 3 years my child attended. Continual excuses.

The morning drop-off is a pain but the afternoon pick-up is a nightmare.

If your child had a good experience at Carmel consider yourself (and them) lucky.

My son loves it here. I'm shocked by the rating but is seems like all the middle schools have odd ratings. It is a tough age for ALL kids. The teachers seems super supportive. The new principal also seems very engaged.

i go to this school at the moment and they dont do anything to help with bullying and racism. people at this school have bullied me the whole time here. the teacher also pick favorites, last year i had a teacher who would yell at me and be very backhanded when talking to me even if i was doing nothing wrong. on multiple accounts she went out of her way to tell me to “sit like a lady”. it really just depends if teachers like you or not

This is literally the absolute worst public school in the state of north carolina. I cannot explain how horrid my experiences at this school. I had been there all 3 years and each year kept getting progressively worse. The staff do not do anything about bullying or discrimination and do not seem to care for anyone’s well being. The teachers there are unbelievably disrespectful and rude and I would never choose for anyone to go to this horrible place.

As a former teacher it all starts with the Administration. Leadership is weak and can't understand how to make a positive environment for staff and students. Most are going through the motion and not really putting in effort. Students are allowed to act out and have very little consequences. Students use the media to post rude and disrespectful comments about staff and other students. A very liberal staff with concepts that promote those views. Administration is just more concerned about their career not the over real reason why they are in this profession alot of lip service. If coming to this school use your judgment do your homework. Listen to your gut and see if it fits. Better then most middle schools but definitely not the best.

I have been in this school all three years, and i can say with CERTAIN that this school sucks. First, they do nothing about the OBVIOUS racism and discrimination that many people at this school do. All they do is shrug it off and focus on some other subject. its also not just racism, the kids just love to bully and make fun of people. Second, they do NOTHING about harassment AT ALL. One of my friends got harassed by a boy on the football team, and there was OBVIOUS evidence to prove it was him. However, they did NOTHING about it and left us all with NO RESPONSE. Eventually, they gave him a small suspension, but it was obvious they only gave him a small punishment because he brings in wins for the football team, its disgusting. No to mention the amount of fights these past years. They don't even care at this point, and give them like a 3 day suspension and send them off. Also, some of the teachers can't even teach. One of the teachers my friend has had to come into my teachers room and ask her how to teach a specific lesson. This has happened MULTIPLE TIMES. And some teachers just hold a grudge for no reason against some students. This one teachers always sends out one of my friends every time we have class with her and just yells at us, giving us no time to even learn or do our lessons. They also barely have any safety precautions for us, and the amount of fights is proof of that. They do many events and family gatherings, however its just so they can suck up the parents as a way to hide the rest of their mistakes. Please trust me and DONT bring your kid here.

Having my children first attending this school over 40 years ago and having grandchildren there recently I can say that this school along with the past performance of cms schools have been a disappointment all the way from discipline issues ,to content of educational issues. Having shortage of teachers is due to lack of addressing teacher pay which has always been a big issue.Only the administrators get the pay and the main teachers never do. So you will never attract people to go into teaching and attract good teachers. Over payed superintendents has always been a big problem as well as this school district is too large. Our public education is on the skids no wonder we are so behind the rest of the world in quality education.

My Son has been at this school for 3 years now. He is prepared for high school. The teachers have been attentive to his needs as an ADD student and I have been pleased with the adminstration. The class offerings and electives are well rounded allowing the students the opportunity to explore different interest. The environment is a safe and positive one. I would highly recommend this school.

Teachers lack care and commitment . Principal allows the teachers to do what they want to do. Know wonder so many kids waving for private school.. We have given it six months but next year will be gone

My son is about to finish 6th grade at this wonderful school. I'm about to move to the Ballantyne area and am VERY sad to have to switch to Community House Middle. My son has a little bit of a reading disability and has an individualized educational program. Frankly, he has NEVER done as well with grades as he has here. The teachers are AWESOME and really have helped him improve. My son does not want to switch either. He absolutely loves it there. I don't know how, but I will be speaking to student assignment to try to keep my son at Carmel, even if it means I have to drive him there myself vs him taking the bus even though I know that would not be easy for me as I'm a mom of 5. Parent ratings for Community House are horrible, especially regarding bullying... I pray he'll be able to stay at this awesome school!!!

I LOVE the staff @ Carmel Middle School. They have always been very helpful to me and my children. I have a 7th and 8th grader that attends Carmel. Both of my children began attending Carmel in the 6th grade. The entire staff is outstanding. The principal and teachers are always responsive to the parent and child. Communication is key and Carmel does a great job keeping the parent informed of their child progress. In the future, my 4th grader will be attending Carmel Middle School as well!

This will be our 5th year at Carmel. It is a wonderful school with very active parents and teachers who go above and beyond with instruction and caring. Marc Angerer, principal, is fair, in tune with his kids and runs a tight ship. The teachers LOVE it there, parents enjoy volunteering and kids seem to thrive. Carmel is the best school my kids have attended (elementary, middle and high school). Keep up the good work COUGAR staff!!!
