This school was very well organized and I enjoyed all fours years there and made a ton of friends.

PLEASE READ!!!

Many students report feeling very prepared for college once arriving. One issue that is a common complaint among students is that two students taking the same class will have a very different workload based upon which teacher they have, however is a minor problem and will be easily fixable by simple conformity legislation by the school's leadership.
As a student, we are first and foremost affected by the attitude which our leadership takes towards addressing rising and present issues and by their initiative to improve Myers Park High School. However, the leadership places their attention in a reactive manner as opposed to an anticipatory manner. It is clear that more work is needed to bring Myers Park's environment to a higher academic level as opposed to maintaining the current mediocre vibes. Furthermore, the communication is not very fluid. While the staff is aware of upcoming events, the student body is often misinformed because administration has not outlined a set form of communication of events between teachers and student. Events are spread mainly by word of mouth from the students who happen to be in a classroom where they have been informed of events by adults in charge. Many of these issues may be a result of understaffing, due to the difficulty of hiring skilled workers who are willing to work for North Carolina's low salaries. Additional leadership is needed to allow for Myers Park to grow as a school instead of maintaining the same levels.
In IB and AP courses, the teachers are very effective and have experience. However, teachers in standard and other classes are often uninvested in both their jobs and their students, leading to extensive knowledge and mindset gaps between higher and lower level students and to halted social mobility.
Bullying is taken very seriously here, especially by Principal Bosco. The social scene is very low on school spirit, but some students admire that the large size of the school makes it less cliquey. The social scene is divided between Honors/AP, IB, and lower courses, however many students cross these lines.
In general, Myers Park High School has the potential to be one of the best public schools in North Carolina, due to its capacity for diversity and academic competition. However, more motions need to be made in the direction of improving the school instead of maintaining its current status.

When we placed our child at Myers Park we had such high expectations, specially of the IB program. So far, the IB program has been nothing but "busy work". For example, one of the projects my child did was give a speech in English class. He had to do the research, write the speech and recite the speech. That was a great assignment, except for the fact that they had to memorize the entire speech (weren't even allowed to use a few note cards as reminders) and the speech was exactly 5 mins. For every 15 seconds the speech was over or under the 5 mins, points were deducted. Seems relatively reasonable except they were not allowed to use a watch and the teacher covered the clock in the classroom. My question is; what is this suppose to teach the kids? This is not real life; it is just a busy exercise that teaches them nothing. I have given many speeches in my life at conferences and work and I have NEVER had to give the speech without visual aids or notecards, or without the use of a clock.
Mr. Bosco, the principal, is less than available, though he claims to have an open door policy. I wrote him 2 separate emails about my willingness to volunteer my time and money to making the school a better place, given the recent school shootings. He never replied to me. I called and spoke to his administrative assistant and made an appointment with Mr. Bosco, since he had not answered either one of my emails. I arrived to the appointment and waited 15 mins before his assistant came out to ask me the reason for my visit. I explained to her again I wanted to talk to him about a program that other schools are implementing in NC for school safety and anti-bullying. She called Mr. Bosco on the radio and he passed me on to speak to one of the coaches about the clubs the school offers to see if my idea fit any one of those clubs. When the coach realized the purpose of my visit, he sent me back to Mr. Bosco's office, at which time the secretary came out again to find out the reason for my visit. She went back to the office to speak to Mr. Bosco and returned to tell me he had no idea what I was talking about and had no time for our meeting. She said Mr. Bosco would get back to me to set another appointment. Of course, I never heard back from him or any body else at the school. Thus, I have to wonder why is a principal not available to speak to a parent who is offering to help.

I moved my children from a very good private school to attend MP in the IB program. I was very happy with the continuation of a wonderful education my children received. I HIGHLY recommend MP and the IB program.

Leadership is unresponsive, unsupportive and unfair. The Principal, Mark Bosco, and Vice Principal, Justin Holt, don't care about the students and prefer to make an example out of a bad situation instead of helping a student succeed.

I am a student at Myers Park high school and I'm junior. I'm Vietnamese student and I like those teachers in Myers Park high school. I love them too much.

Bring back teaching of basic values of civility and respect to our high schools. This is a wonderful community. Children still say the pledge of allegiance in elementary schools. We need to keep values of unity and respect integrated in the middle and upper schools as well. Young men and women shine your light brightly because you are our future. Do good and be good to one another.

I am a student at myers park this school is bad and good some of the teacher are mean and rude. if you are late for at lease for have a sec the teacher will go crazy and Caplan why are you late even tho that you was only late for have of sec and that are getting the kids in to trubble for no reason and the school puts the office in the front of the school even the school is really big that could put the office in the middle of the school that make the the students late on purpose so that can get sent to lockout and if that give you a pass to class the teacher won't care and send you to lockout for no reason

I am currently a freshman at Myers Park. I actually like my school a lot. most of the problems in Myers Park are issues that will be found at all public schools. I am in the IB program, so I am not often with kids in "the wrong crowd". I have been super satisfied with my teachers so far also (with the exception of one not-so-great math teacher, but she actually left for another job!) my teachers are all amazing, and really care about our education. Class sizes definitely vary based on what class it is. My math class had 27 students, while my world history class has 49. one bad thing about the campis is sometimes the cleanliness...the bathrooms are down rught disgusting. overall though, i love my school and am happy to be enrolled here.

This school is the best in the city...ask the college reps at the college fairs. Yes, it is competitive, but if you want your child challenged send them here.

Your child's education begins at home. This is an excellent school. And gives an excellent opportunity for students to experience what College will be like. Take control of your education. Expecting staff or teachers to babysit your children while you remain uninvolved, and then complain about the staff and teachers? No wonder many of the parents on here have complaints-- get involved. They can't do it alone. By comparison to other schools this is a large school-- you should want your kids to be in a larger school-- the ratio of students to teachers is still excellent, there are just a lot more of them... that's the real world. I graduated from a high school with over 5,000 students and 1800 in my senior class-- MPHS is half that size. The student body if very diverse. From underpriveledged students to those that are from the most expensive neighborhoods in Charlotte. Welcome to the real world.

There are a lot of fights at this school, and my child was in the class the lady spoke of previously where the boy was pleasuring himself. The teacher was not aware of what was going on! How can this be? I don't fault the staff for the numerous fights, there are just so many kids and some are not from good homes. I've had two children attend Myers Park and I don't love it because of its size. Also, the lady on the left in the front office is rude and puts her personal calls above helping anyone at the front desk. Why is her rudeness permitted?

I am not sure what all the praise about Myers Park is about. The school is average, at best. The math teachers are poorly qualified. My child's teacher for Algebra I and Geometry was completely incompetent. My child tells me of fights at the school on a daily basis and not a week goes by that someone is not arrested at the school. The administration is not engaged. I asked for a meeting with the principal three times and was turned down each time. Middle management is good, but a fish rots from the head first. If I had is all to do over again I would not move to this school's attendance zone.

This school has a bad drug problem....I'm seriously thinking of not sending my second child to this school. I have been through a very rough 1 1/2 yrs...Drug education classes, counseling and finally a new school mid year. It all went down hill when she started at MP. We are now doing much better at a small private school, which I'm lucky we can afford. Now my child enjoys going to school. Before she use to cry. I was on the verge of taking her for major psycho therapy.

I graduated from Myers Park in 2011.....I think it's one of the best schools in Charlotte.. We had our share of problems just like every school but it's not a bad school.......if you associate with the right people you won't have any problems

No support for exceptional chidren here. Not sure why the lady with the desk in the left corner of front office always has an attitude.Staff can be inflexible , and patronizing at times. Be careful of them telling you what they can't do for your child and require them to show you in the policy. Push for your childs rights and best interests.Get an advocate or you will be run over .The squeaky wheel get the oil.

We have a student in Myers Park High School as a freshman this year. My husband has custody and his mother has taken him and refuses to bring him back. Courts don't help much and the school allowed his mother to enroll him, even though they have a court order on file from 2008 stating that my husband has custody. They will not give us information about our son that we ask for and avoid answering most all questions, although my husband is the legal custodian. His mother legally only has visitation rights. This school has acted very unethically by allowing a knowingly non-custodial parent to enroll a child.
