This school is genuinely awful. I DO NOT recommend.
Why?
Ive been coming here since kindergarten and in my long list of years Ive learned a few things.
1) if you arent sporty, popular, or developmentally caught up with people, you will be socially outcast and therefore be bullied to the point of wanting to leave. ( this has happened multiple times)
2) the school is incredibly small. That sounds fine, but when you have been with the same people for 13 years you learn things about each other and the insults and verbal bullying becomes worse and worse each year.
3) the administration and school board is awful. We, as the student body, feel expendable and disregarded. The teachers are pretty charming in the sense that for being underpaid and overworked that are really kind, however the school board and admins are horrible.
4) the safety regarding the state of the school is worrying since threats and illegal stuff has been happening more and more. (Especially after the firing of a certain highschool principal)

This is just a small list of things that are awful with this school. If you are a parent and are reading this, please do not send your child here. They are money hungry and will disregard your child at a given notice.

My child use to love school until they started going here .The ,middle school is bad as the principal can't do their job and they constantly are asking for money .The elementary school was fine as well as the high school.

This school has been a MAJOR improvement from another charter school we attended in the area. East Wake Academy has provided an excellent education for my child thus-far. The communication has been excellent and the fun learning environment and activities planned for the children exceeds any of our previous experiences.

They are not a good school anymore they will fail your child. They are running like a business and will tell you that your child is replaceable. If you child has an IEP forget about it

The middle school has been under the same failed leadership for years. Its a really bad place to put your kid and if mine didnt traverse through to high school its four years I wouldnt have put them through. The elementary and high schools are pretty good but loaded with white kids who are either very religious or wealthy. The lottery is a lie. Just put on the app your kid went to a nearby church for preschool and youre in. Theres little to no diversity in the student body. The place started shifting a few years ago when, without explanation they let every Kindergarten and first grade teacher go, replaced every one. If the whole place goes the way of the middle school just close it. The middle school needs new leadership and the administration knows who parents are talking about. Shes got cultural demographics protecting her job. Its also got a conservative religious student body and board and its all very twisted. Their old security guard retired last year and still no replacement to my knowledge. In a gun fetish, bible school charter environment thats not very reassuring. The school is Trump country and if your family or kid cant handle that, avoid it.

Pretty interesting that a previous review of mine was taken down.
First, this school is not lottery. All you have to do is be a local business owner or donate and voila! Your kids will get in first try.
Second, the school asks for money ALL THE TIME.
Third, their authoritarian style leadership is crushing the kids and parents. They squash any leadership skills in kids and strongly suppress any kind of individualism. We pulled our kids out to homeschool- as did a fleet of other families.
Bullying is also a huge issue that goes uninvestigated.

We are elementary, and I really love the school. Bullying has been dealt with wonderfully. Teachers and principals are amazing. Mr. gay is great and does a great job to address issues, in my opinion this is a great school if you're looking for something outside the public system. I was bullied terribly as a child and want to make sure my children get a different experience, they are getting that at EWA! thank you to all the amazing teachers and leaderhsip :)

I have mixed feelings about this institution, so Ill break it down for any who are curious.

Teachers: 9/10 would receive a 5 star rating. They seem to genuinely care as much as possible considering how many students they have.

Class sizes: 5/10 they are about public school size.

Communication: 8/10 A car was broken into recently and those that broke into the car were able to get into the high school building. Parents werent notified until at least a day later. Teacher to parent communication is exemplary.

Administration: I never had an issue in elementary academy. Though I have heard stories that are horrifying, a mom questioned what the admin was doing about her child being bullied and was told to know her place, I personally did not experience trouble. The middle academy is a different story. Leadership qualities are stamped out of students. Instead of being challenged and cultivated, curiosity when it comes to rules or even laws, is met with a totalitarianism approach in favor of the admin.

Staff: staff is constantly changing, the year prior to us arriving at EWA saw entire grades in elementary fired without notice. Good teachers that parents loved, not shotty ones, for no apparent reason. We have our suspicions that align with my aforementioned comments about admin, but no confirmation. Currently, there are entire grades that dont have real teachers, only subs, and teachers leave halfway through the year with little notice to children. This causes confusion for them and their grades suffer.

EWA Board: the board meetings have become more about political pandering than about the actual children. The last board meeting was infuriating. Parents had signed up to speak out against some current policies and to question what the goal of the board is at this point, so they cancelled the meeting and emailed us all individually, telling each of us that we were the only one who signed up to speak. The board doesn't care what the parents want, nor do they want to hear about concerns. Every decision they have made through the pandemic has hindered the childrens education progression, which is evident in test scores and overall moral.

We came to this school excited to see like minded individuals that cared about kids education. We wanted a school that cultivated leadership, learning and engagement. We got the opposite.
If your child has a mind of their own and strong leadership skills, they will not thrive here.

Unchecked bullying is also an issue.

This school is Pretty great. I think that people are just overexadreating because there is no bullying For what grade i'm in. I've been in this school ever since kindergarten, and these teachers are pretty nice, but There are uniforms that I don't really like. They sometimes have dress down days, but I think there could be more.

EWA is an amazing school and, without question, the best for this part of the Wake County. The school is thin on extracurricular programs but the trade off is worth it for the quality of education.

The folks that run this school are doing a poor job. The teachers work hard, but the students ought to be doing better since this school cherry picks the top performing students. Anybody can teach the kind of students that a school like this picks. Interestingly, the curriculum at charter schools are often inferior to those of regular public schools.

My son is only in 1st grade, but our experience so far has been outstanding. The staff and students have been very helpful and this school has a sprit and pride I just didn't see at other neighboring charters or public schools. We truly did win the lottery when we came to join this family. My sons reading and math skills surpass what we expected at this level and I can see from his teachers commitment to his success it was a team effort. Great staff that actually love teaching, helpful students, beautiful campus, and active parental support. In short, Great School!

As a former student at EWA I saw the school grow a lot over the years. It has definitely seen its fair share of ups and downs but I am thankful that my parents chose to send me here. I cant think of a better school from which to graduate! The lessons I learned here have not only benefited my educational career in college but carried over into the person that I am today. I still have siblings at the school and I know that they are continuing to get a strong education that will allow them to succeed in the future. The faculty and staff care deeply about each one of the students who attend. You will not find that at a regular public school. From a security standpoint, in my 13 years as a student I never once felt unsafe on campus. I can count on one hand the number of fights I witnessed. The teachers do not tolerate disciplinary issues. You will hear the students complain that they have to wear uniforms but I know from experience that it was much easier to pull a uniform out of the closet for school than to spend time trying to decide what to wear. All of this combined, created an atmosphere to mold me into an accomplished leader in and out of the classroom.

i have a doughtier in the 7th grade and its ok she has lost her math teacher and her social studies teacher in one year. the new S.S. teacher is amazing. But the math teacher is not all that great her grades have dropped from a 90% down to a 60%. she has had some trouble with some other students. and the middle school office is not very supportive in my opinion. also i think this school only cares about test scores to keep it up at honner school of excellence but don't care about the students the 7th grade teachers are ok but they are not the best i have seen i hope 8th grade is better for my daughter than the 7th grade was

EWA is a great place to be! My kids love everyday. The new Superintendent has made a huge difference. The school now has direction and he is willing to listen. Looking forward to the new middle school building and what else the new leadership will bring to EWA. Are they perfect - no, but willing to work on it!

Last year was the only bad year we have had at EWA. The teachers are caring, they get involved with the kids and they push them to reach goals that are higher than standard educational goals.

I am a student at east wake academy. The school has a lot of focus on the EC program and that is the only reason they have high test scores. The AIG program is basically nonexisant the teachers almost handout As and that makes the parents happy. The school also goes through teachers like it is nothing I have had 9 math teachers in the past 4 years.

I have had a kindergartener attending here for the 2012-2013 school year. We have had a great experience so far and anticipate for it to continue. Great, caring teachers. Good communication to our family of two working parents. Great opportunities to be involved volunteering with the school. We look forward to many years to come involved with this WONDERFUL school and GREAT staff.
