As a former student I was there from 2012-2013 for my 6th grade year. The staff and teachers were all horrible besides two of my teachers. I was picked on and bullied. I have autism and ADHD. I was also grieving the loss of my dad. They put me in this strange grieving group which helped but it didnt make up for how the staff and the teachers targeted me on every little thing. Their lessons were a mess and I had a hard time learning, even when I tried to ask questions Id be brushed off or told to figure it out myself. I was bullied badly on the buss and my mom had to physically talk to the buss driver then the principal who did nothing about the problem. After graduating 6th she made us move because of how bad the school and education was. I was hoping that when I came back to town 10 years later that the reviews would be better however it seems like its only gotten worse.

Irresponsible, teacher did not display the bus information correctly and made multiple students to miss the PM bus. No safety at all, made all the students sat outside the main entrance for the parents to pickup them.

I would not recommend this school. We put our child in honors classes, and the learning strategies were not solid , it was mostly just messy homework assignments and stress every night. She barely spent time with us because of this homework, they assign more work at home than at school. Also, theres bullying. My daughter and her friend were picked on by some kids for their weight ,race, and looks. The teachers assured it wouldnt happen ,but yet turned a blind eye to it.

Toxic administrators; very very very biased; cause severe trauma to families especially colored ones; no concern for kids mental wellbeing; they will break your kids self-esteem.

Discrimination and bad administration of justice! the principal asistan acuses my son of something he didnt do because she confused him with other kid in a security camera and even when we demonstrate he is innocent they charge him! definitely is the worst Schooll we ever see

This school sucked. I went there for one year and couldn't wait too get out of there. Teachers were bland and boring, they didn't connect with any of their students. The lunch was horrible and sometime it didn't even seem like it was real food.

Such a great school, we had all 4 of our kids move on from Elon Park, to CH and Ardery Kell and then attend University of Chapel Hill.

The positives: Rigorous core academic requirements; some excellent teachers; modern building facilities.

The negatives: Some teachers lacking mastery of their subject; unprofessional administration; metrics prioritized over students' wellbeing; overcrowding that makes Times Square look like a walk in the park.

If you come from the Northeast you will wonder why everyone cares so much about the athletic programs, why the math teachers don't know math, and why the administrators are unresponsive and unprofessional. It's not a bad school... but if you come from a state with normal tax levels, you will feel disappointed and wonder why it's ranked so highly.

I have a straight A honors math & honors ELA student athlete in this school who has been labeled as a trouble maker for being an independent thinker. Although the staff has always praised my child for being kind and even protective of students with disabilities, my kid was slapped on the troublemaker label and had to live with that at CHMS. Her teachers constantly praise her and have reached out to us with wonderful emails, however the administration looks past that and doesn't know how to deal with leaders such as my child. ISS and OSS are handed out to kids on a daily basis. Be careful!

Our second year at CHMS.

My child was not challenged at all in their previous school. The moment they stepped foot into this school the teachers expected nothing more than excellence from them.

CHMS faculty are preparing the students for real life and college. Teaching them responsibility and independence. My child stated that they have learned more, feels respected, and believes that the teachers want them to succeed.

Parents MUST advocate for their child. In my experience, It has been as easy as an email conversation, with a 48hour response time, to advocate for my child's education. Teachers are not perfect and neither are our children. We have to work together.

CHMS has a large population of students and if your child has special needs, or behavior problems you must work very close with the staff (daily or weekly emails in addition to meetings) to have positive results.

I have had ineffective teachers for my child and I've had very effective teachers.

In both situations I have been validated and supported by the VP. We worked together for the best results for the child.

While I understand why homework exist, I'm not sure I agree that it's necessary. Studies are showing that students grades may actually increase with no homework.

So IMO yes, there is too much homework but it's not a reflection of this school homework policy. It's my overall opinion of the true value of homework nationwide.

The reason I feel this school helps to develop honesty, integrity is that my child had a difficult time adjusting to middle school. The VP and the guidance counselor were patient and kind, uplifting his confidence. As a result he is doing very well.

My daughter attended here 6 years ago and it was good then. She had great teachers. This year some teachers are mediocre which is okay and one teacher is terrible. His website is a mess. I try to find other teacher websites to help find information about assignments. JM Robinson has great teacher websites. Unfortunately we aren't always in synch with their curriculum. Classroom teaching seems to be pretty weak, especially for math & social studies in 6th grade team Rain

This school is on a late schedule. My son gets home from school at 5pm. He does homework 4 days per week from 6pm-8pm. It's unreasonable.

The school is disrespectful to a 10 year old being bullied by his teacher. The school counselor accused my 10 year old of lying by saying "I don't like kids that lie". My son is not a liar. He is being bullied by one teacher. Many witnesses, and he even received a 60 for a completion grade on a homework assignment this week. The homework was done. My son is an A/B student & has never had behavioral issues other than random silliness. But he is NOT a bad kid. This teacher's bullying is inflicting psychological damage.

Sadly my son's 6th grade math & social studies teacher is a bully. It's difficult to handle a teacher who bullies a child. At first I thought that my son was exaggerating about this teacher. Now, in early November I see that my son was right. He has a great science and ELA teacher and his other teachers are good too. My heart is broken that an adult is terrorizing my child every day. I will give the school one chance to make it right. If they don't act swiftly, I will have to remove my child from the situation.

I just wanted to say the poor review about a child with anxiety appears to have been posted last year and again this year. So, parents may wish to consider this when looking at the average rating. As a parent with a child who suffers from anxiety as well, all I can suggest is a school counselor is a great resource for pre or post test anxiety or situational anxiety at school but one needs to reach out to public health services to receive private counseling for your child for free or sliding scale rates and they can work in concert with the school counselor. This would be an issue at any school.

My kid has disability and was bullied by the school. He could not go to school because of his severe anxieties. The school told us to do this and that and I followed whatever they said because I was so desperate and wanted him to go back to school so he would not miss any school day. Now I have a huge debt for medical bills because I do not have insurance but I went to hospital as told by the school . Just want to let the school know, we are now having difficulties and having been moving from one place to another for more than 6 months for that debt in my credit prevents us to rent any proper apartment. I am single mother with four children and we keep moving around. My son lost four months of school. I hope you satisfy. Probably you even read this with a smile because that what you want? Hate us for what reasons? We were new when we moved to this city. We did not do anything bad that you should hate us? I do not know what . Just to let parents know what kind of people run this school. Thanks for destroying our life. Good job. Think about innocent four children 2 years old to 13 years old...I thought you were educators? Educators who hate children?

I am so glad that my kid does not need to attend this school any more because we are going to relocate ! He learned almost nothing here. He was bored to death in the classes. Very unprofessional principal and staff.

I think this school is just Average or OK. I have loved most of my child's teachers so far (all but 1 every year) and think that most of them are dedicated and interested in my child's learning experience. Where I struggle is that my child is exceptionally smart but we moved here late therefore he was not offered classes he should have been. He has proved himself with scoring well above average on the EOG tests in all subjects and has continued straight A's. He is bored in class and I have spoken to the guidance counselor as well as teachers all of who looked at me as if I was crazy. The front office is never welcoming and I find myself apologizing all the time for doing things the wrong way depending on who is helping me. If I could choose middle schools this one would not be at the top of my list however the elementary schools and high school in the area are some of the best so I guess for only 3 years it will do.

We moved from the northeast (where the academics are supposed to superior), but CHMS was way ahead of my children's old school. This is an amazing school that is led by talented teachers. We've been extremely happy.

As a new student here I think this school is one of the best I have been to. There is no bullying here like the reviews said. I am in 8th grade and there is also not 1 hour of homework every night, actually there never has been at all during the year. The teachers here are really nice and helpful, some of the reviews aren't even true. It is not like a prison here and you can talk during lunch and class changing. Those times are really the most noisiest except for teen time. Yes, there is teen time here. The reviews about bullying and stuff, most of that I have never even seen here. I have been bullied a lot and have been to schools that are like a prison and the teachers and people are really mean. This place has none of that.

My child has a special problem . The school staff were not helpful at all. I feel some discrimination to minors. My son went months without school, they did not let him do assignments at home without any reasons. They laugh my son and his anxieties problems as if they do not exist. The school counselor told me to go to hospital emergency room to get a letter for my son so he can be put on home bound. I did not know that it costs more than 1000 dollars for the emergency fee. The school counselor knew my son does not have insurance. We have to pay out of our pocket. It is only for a home bound medical letter. When I told them about the fee, they just walked away. My friends said it is very cruel to tell us to go to emergency room without informing about the cost. Moreover, it is psychological problem that won't be diagnosed by one visit. I think they have reasons why they don't want to put him at home bound, and the reason is racism.

My child was bullied by the teachers and other students. We have just moved here from other state. My son had problems concentrated because other students kept talking and talking in the class and during assignments. He got bad scores at the beginning, and the teachers did whatever they could so he would move out from the school. After I read other reviews, I understood what have happened so far. I agree that the principal only cares about grades, and she wants to eliminate students with bad grades. Actually my son was assessed by a psychologist and he found that he is very intelligent. It is the school which is too noisy that he could not study at all. What a waste of time sending a kid to this kind of school that does not educate children and only focus on test scores.

OMG, what a bunch of whining parents!! My child did her three yrs. at CHMS and LOVED it, as did I. These are pubescent "darlings" that need a thumb on them...NO RECESS? boo hoo...middle school is HARD people and it only gets tougher in high school. I think most of you still wipe your child's nose and don't expect them to do it themselves. It is no longer elementary school. Middle school and the rigorous academics are getting them ready for HIGH SCHOOL and the WORLD! if it is too tough, home school them because you are going to find all the same issues at any other middle school in Charlotte. The principal runs a tight ship and the AK principal runs an even tighter ship. I say GOOD for both of them!

We moved to Charlotte Meck after living in Marvin (Union County) and I must say we have been very pleased with this school, and was quite surprised how it stacked up to our last school. Our daughter is doing very well in Community House and we have had no issues. She goes to tutoring when its needed or the teacher feels its needed, we loved her 7th grade teachers and now she is in 8th grade and her math and science teacher are her favorite. For us as a family we made the right decision to move to Ballantyne as our daughter is getting an excellent education.

I think this school is okay. I just moved here. About the previous post on April 17 only on occasions is there one hour of homework. In fact my Algebra I teacher says if you spend more than an hour on your homework then put it aside and come to help. Given the choice of schools in the area, I suppose this one would be the lesser of two evils and the greater of another. My children came from an elementary school in which the kids would potentially go to one of three different middle schools. We chose this one, because my oldest child had an IEP and most of the kids who knew him from Elementary were going here so we felt that the transition would be a bit easier. While we NEVER encountered a bullying issue - even with a child with special needs - we did find more than our fair share of teachers who are ill-equipped to do the job, and those who are well- equipped are being drowned by so many hands clutching for them to help them stay afloat. The IEP resources are a "joke." Most Resource personnel think that it is their job to just tell the kids what they're supposed to do to get a singular answer right, instead of showing them the methodologies required to get them ALL right (IOW they seem to fee it's easier to do their work for them instead of showing them how to do it). If you have a choice, choose somewhere else. Otherwise pray for a TOTAL Administrative change.

We relocated to CLT in late July, and this is our first year at CHMS, and last. My children have had the privilege to attend schools in two separates states in the USA and oversees, and my expectations of CHMS fell way short for my kids and I. The principal and front staff do not have a sense of service, but instead of incredible arrogance. Please serve others well all the time or get out. My kids are tired of the numerous wiki pages each individual teacher has. The work is not loaded most of the time. Most of the teachers are nice and well prepared, but we feel kids are squashed under unrelenting school procedures with no play time or socializing. I operate a company with 500+ employees I just relocated to Charlotte, and if any of my associates do not have a heart for service, an understanding that customers have needs, and need to be treated with decency with no exception are terminated on the spot.

8:30 am - 5:00 pm / M-F - that is child's school week. After 45 hours you would think there was some serious learning and teaching going on, to the contrary. 80 minute blocks with no talking, no moving, no socializing and then they assign homework. Forget after school sports or activities, there is at least an hour of homework every day. After being successful at every endeavor in his life, my son is failing to "learn how to do Community House". Orientation was a joke and instead of preparing our family for the transition, we were subjected to two hours of the incredibly arrogant principal to tell us what we were not going to do at "her school". Assignments are delivered to the kids in a collegiate format where we have to check each individual teacher's "wiki" pages nightly. Half the work or assignments are not uploaded, each wiki is in a different format, and it is a part time job managing my 6th graders school work. Our child is bright, well spoken, and popular and everything that makes him special is squashed under the unrelenting thumb of the procedures. We are pulling him out after this year and have nothing positive to say about our experience at CHMS.

We just moved here from the midwest and like many of the other reviews, feel the same way about the school being run like a prison. The children are given assigned seats for lunch and they can't socialize with anyone in the cafeteria unless they are at their specific table. There is ZERO socializing in the hallways before or after school, and no recess. The students are given 5 minutes to switch between classes and use the restroom. One teacher that my child has for math requires that at least one warm up problem is started during this 5 minute transition time. It makes it very hard for my child to get to the classroom, use the restroom, and have the work started. I wished we would have gone to Union county. I do like my child's teachers, I just don't care for the military style running of the building. If your child is new to the school, it will be EXTREMELY hard to meet new friends do to the lack of of time to just be a kid.

We moved here from upstate NY and could not believe the difference in schools. The front office staff at Community House MS was the most unfriendly, unhelpful staff I have ever encountered. I go to the office frequently and they definitely need some special training on how to treat parents and students. They all appear to hate their jobs. I worked in a school for 10 years while living in NY and in my experience front office staff members are usually very friendly and helpful. My child was bullied on facebook and on her phone. I called the school and they said there was nothing they could do about it if it did not occur at school. There were a couple of amazing teachers but for the most part the teachers were terrible. Wished we had a better experience.

I have read the last several reviews and I agree the school is run with an iron hand but with 1600 kids it has to be. In a perfect world we would have another middle school built but we don't have that so we have a school with a lot of kids. My daughter has had a pretty good experience. Her counselor was great and has taken the time to talk to me when I needed to I think south Charlotte schools take a very strong stance on bullying. And I can tell you my daughter hasn't seen half of what I saw and experienced in middle school which I am thankful for. I think its a good school. I feel that she is safe. I will say I have heard the high school we feed into is like a prison and I do think high schoolers need some freedom. But in middle school I think the structure is good.

There are so many problems with the previous post. First of all the bullying. I know it's hard to admit, but parents aren't as aware of what is going on in their child's life either because they're too busy, or b/c technology has made it easier for students to bully one another and keep things private. Tell your granddaughter's parents to do their parenting job and stop blaming the school. I know first hand that the school does everything they legally can to stop bullying. Tests on this site are state tests which are very high because the students are taught the curriculum which is what the test is based on. Parents of this school can be very demanding and if they don't get their way, they think the school is bad. As a former teacher, you should help your children be more supportive of the school. Be part of the solution - not a problem. Teachers and administration here hold students to high standards, but that's only truly effective with supportive parents.

My granddaughter attended CHMS last year and I sincerely hope her parents are able to find a better solution for her for the future. There is no leadership, no accountability, and little close supervision of the students. When a problem is brought to the attention of the administration, it is effectively swept under the carpet. Bullying is a huge problem at this school and virtually nothing is done to curtail it. Find another school, don't believe the hype! Test scores are high because students are allowed to retake the test when they fail something. "Teaching the test" is the order of the day! "Great Schools" uses tests as the basis for their rating, which explains their score of 10. Just for your information, I am a former teacher and have taught in four states. NEVER have I known of a poorer environment for students, nor have I seen a more lax administration. I would avoid this school at all costs if you value your student's self-esteem.
