I am extremely disappointed with the environment at Russell Middle School. There are ongoing issues with bullying that are not being handled appropriately, and this is clearly not an isolated problem—it is a pattern.

What is even more concerning is that the issue is not limited to students. My child was spoken to in a demeaning and inappropriate way by a teacher, in front of peers, which was completely unacceptable. No student should be embarrassed or talked down to by someone in a position of authority. This is not about being “tough” or “holding students accountable”—it crossed a line.

Even more troubling, this is not the first time we have experienced this. A similar situation occurred with another teacher involving my older son. At that point, it becomes clear this is not a one-off incident, but a broader issue with how some staff interact with students.

The biggest issue, however, is the lack of leadership. The principal has been made aware of these concerns, yet nothing meaningful has changed. When behavior like this is allowed to continue, it sends a clear message that it is tolerated. At this point, it feels like these issues are being ignored rather than addressed.

When teachers are allowed to speak to students this way, and bullying among students continues without proper intervention, it creates a negative and unsafe environment. Schools are supposed to support and build kids up, not contribute to tearing them down.

A school should be a place where students feel safe, respected, and supported. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. There is a serious lack of accountability, and until that changes, this will continue to be a problem.

Students deserve better.

Horrible leadership from the top down. Vice Principal Snow should replace Beth Fink as principal. Her callous behavior towards kids and staff is unacceptable. Her office is full of inspirational quotes, none of which she lives by or acts on, and anyone who needs tacky items like that lacks true wisdom and understanding of how to inspire the next generation of adults. She should not be involved in the lives of children. A job at Walmart might better suit her skills, or lack thereof. Even looking into the eyes of her coworkers, you can tell they are not on board with her leadership. I'm sure I am not the only one who has noticed this issue with this school. It's time for the Millard School District to make some changes at this school as soon as possible. There is also a manager issue with gangs and kids posting pictures of guns who attend this school, which they are not addressing.
The Kids and the Staff deserve a better leader to inspire them to all be better teachers, counselors, and students. Beth Fink is a cloud of despair for this school.

The school is ok. I think it does a good job on safety and the teachers are very kind. I would recomend. The food is ok, though

Overall it is not a good experience. I don't know what is going on in those classrooms but kids with a capacity to learn and who actually learn the material should not be failing.

There is an emphasis on in-class work and if your child withdraws they are not given any ability to make up the work or fix their grade. If your child is immature or struggles with paying attention this is probably a school to avoid.

Some teachers are excellent (highly recommend the band program) but there are teachers that refuse to work with kids who struggle. My son struggles with paying attention (he puts his head down but he is listening) and with writing. He has one teacher failing him based solely on participation grading (even though he knows the actual material) and one who failed him on a test where he got 100% on everything but one written response section (it's a science class) - and the written response contained the details to answer the question but wasn't written the way she wanted. I have reached out to both teachers and the principal and basically been told my son has to have these consequences. He's failing classes in middle school not because he hasn't learned the material but because he isn't learning it the way they want him to learn it.

Teachers do not communicate. If your child has an issue in class you might find out about it a few days later when a bad grade is posted or if you reach out. Some teachers are excellent but there are a few that lack compassion - any compassion taught by other teachers is completely dismantled by a few.

The principal and counselors are limited and the teachers who won't work with your child are not walked back at all. If the teacher decides your kid is going to fail, your kid is going to fail. My son withdraws and doesn't participate in class sometimes - how is it that remote learning students are passing but he is failing? There are options but the school won't offer any options except for a journal that my son would need to get signed by teachers and show me every day (because he's so going to do that on bad days...)

My son withdraws and puts his head down sometimes. His teacher is now failing him for it. He struggles with writing complete sentences and capitalization. He has another teacher who failed him on a test for that. Both teachers are aware from parent teacher conferences that those are areas he is working on but neither will offer anything to help - they will just fail him. If you want teachers that will target your kids weakest areas and fail them for it so they can 'grow', this is your school.

I love this school and the teachers will help you at anytime the homework is great i learn more by doing it and i love how clean and nice everyone is.
