I do NOT recommend this school. My son was being bullied by three students who were calling him gay, and when he reported it to his teacher, she dismissed him and did nothing. No investigation was started, no disciplinary action was taken, and I his mother was never contacted. I had to find out from my son himself.

Under New Jersey's Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, teachers are legally required to report bullying immediately. That did not happen. My son was instead told to handle it himself and then got in trouble. That is unacceptable.

I have escalated this matter to the Superintendent/CEO and will take it to the NJ Department of Education if it is not resolved. This is not an isolated issue. I hear from other parents that complaints at this school consistently go unaddressed, and it is clear why families are leaving. If you are considering enrolling your child here, please think carefully. Every child deserves to feel safe at school and Benjamin Banneker Preparatory Charter School has not been able to guarantee that for my son.

This school is doing a commendable job despite the many challenges it faces daily. The administration and teachers work hard to raise academic performance and improve test scores while serving a large number of low-performing students who require additional support and attention. The staff remains committed to providing a safe learning environment and helping every child succeed. Parents must also remember that this is a school choice charter school, meaning families voluntarily choose to enroll their children here and should support the schools mission and expectations rather than constantly criticizing it. If some parents feel the school is not the right fit for their child, they have the option to withdraw and seek another educational environment, which would also allow other families and students who truly want to learn the opportunity to attend. Overall, the school deserves recognition for its dedication, persistence, and commitment to student achievement despite the obstacles it faces.

Test scores are low, with state assessments indicating that only about 10% of students hit proficiency in math and 29% in reading and state that special education classrooms have been severely unequipped, with individualized education program (IEP) needs allegedly not being met or ignored.

This school is despicable, my friends children have been suffering tremendously from their stay a Benjamin Banneker Prep Charter School. They make children sit on the floor when having lunch detention like dogs DESPICABLE. I understand that kids do make mistakes but making them SIT ON THE FLOOR IS EXTREMELY DESPICABLE. They do not treat special education children properly, they let the students have outbursts and dont correct their behavior. They also have special education children in regular classes, so they do not receive the proper education needed for them. There staff openly talk about children and staff. They have many rules that prevent children from being kids. EVERYONE THAT ATTENDS are still children, even though there should be consequences for their actions. The consequence should not be sitting on the floor. Please take this review and SHUT DOWN this terrible dungeon!

This school is terrible they do not care about the students and just scream for absolutely no reason they blow whistles close to students which hurt some of their ears and they openly show grades to try embarrass students the worst part of the school is definitely the admin and higher ups the dean was the worst one there they also threaten daily to kick kids out of the schools and tell other students if a student got kicked out they also show blatant favoritism for the younger grades and for certain students and openly admit that they said a certain student is their favorite. The teachers especially math teachers arent good and many struggle to learn and understand since the teacher isnt that good and the school blames the students when they dont understand the school is also dirty and doesnt get cleaned everyday. I do not recommend this school at all and you go to any other public school.

The elementary school experience was definitely more positive than the middle school experience. There are teachers who really try their best. However, the staff are almost all novice teachers and the students would benefit from a bit more balanced staffing and veteran support. However, that is difficult to achieve when staff are demeaned in front of parents and the Board. The seemingly adversarial climate results in a high turnover rate. My child's teacher was switched to an uncertified teacher without even parental contact. The information is only available from attending/ listening into Board meetings and reading between the lines. There is an over emphasis on uniforms while academic growth actually regresses. Also, much instructional time is a wasted on the school's additional standardized tests (in addition to what the states requires) which do not actually direct instruction as indicated by the school's low state test scores.

Our family's experience is excellent. Our three children have attended this school thankfully. My oldest is now in high school and has been top of her class three years in the running, my middle child was in the honors classes through BBPrep and plans to continue in honors in high school, and my youngest doesn't want to be left behind. She also pushes herself to be top of her class and will be in the honors class next year. We are involved parents with the school because we believe in the home and school partnership to support our children in their academic careers.

The teachers reply quickly to emails. They send out progress reports (sometimes weekly), will connect you to their google classroom to see what work your child has, and will call with questions, concerns, and even positive things about your child. Anytime I have had a concern, I was able to talk or meet with the teacher to resolve any issues.

This is said daily in their school affirmation. The school has also provided opportunities for my children to demonstrate these characteristics. Whether it was being a safety, tutoring, bus buddy, making dinner for firefighters, JDRF, Pennies for Patients, cozies for cancer, senior citizen day, letters to soldiers, (and many more) my children had an opportunity to show these characteristics.

They have assemblies and activities on this issue. When we had an issue with our child, she and the other children were talked to that same day and the issue was addressed. The counselor checked on her later at home and throughout the few weeks after the issue initially happened. I feel confident that if something else were to come up, it would be handled quickly.

My daughter's experience at BBPCS has been good. At her previous school (WR James), she experienced bullying and nothing was done about it. The secreatary at the previous school ws very mean and the principal did not advocate for a music and art program which the children need in order to balance out the academics. BBPCS has everything- the academics and Ms. Ortega is an awesome music teacher. They had a winter concert and all the parents came out to support their children and the school. They have parent academy night- an informational session for parents and tutoring if your child needs help in ELA or math. BBPCS's gym teacher is awesome. They dont even have a gymnasium at the elementary school campus but the gym teacher takes the kids outside and plays games with them twice a week (something I never saw at WR James). Ms. Gallo did a phenomenal job for black history month with the Living Wax Museum in her classroom. My daughter enjoyed researching the person she portrayed and the parents had an opportunity to show their support as we wee invited to the class event. The PTA president has skate night around the holidays. It's just a wonderful experience having my daughter attend BBPCS. I thank God everyday for it. Keep up the good work BBPCS!!!

I am so thankful for BB Prep coming along when they did! They helped my son mature to a responsible young man. He just recently received an award for the highest grade in Math!

One of the best decision I ever made was to send my daughter to Benjamin Banneker Prep, before my daughter attended Benjamin Banneker Prep she was struggling in her studies and was falling behind, and when we decided to send our daughter to Benjamin Banneker Prep that was the best decision we could have ever made because the turn around in my daughter and the confidence showed and her grades and the education that she received at Benjamin Banneker Prep prepared her for High School were she was able to excel and graduate with honors last June and it currently attending college this fall. I just feel that if you send your kids to Benjamin Banneker Prep you are make one of the best decisions and your kids will get the best education that will prepare them for High School and beyond.
