I am furious to find out that the son of a family member of mine, is struggling in 5th grade at this school as it is, and his teacher is giving out way too much homework. To my, understanding, homework is supposed to be limited to those who struggle. This child has had learning issues throughout the years. There are good subjects this child can do, but his workload gets tripled in the other subjects. He cannot sit through past 10 minutes of this work and the school, just told his parent they are expected to work 30 minutes on homework. In my opinion that is too long. They do enough work IN class as it is. He is not supposed to be bombarded with schoolwork every, single day like this. The teacher apparent assumed, his parents don't care and thought they had an issue with him doing homework at all. They always encourage him to do it, not the other way around like this teacher assumed.
In my opinion, they should have kept homeschooling free, so he wouldn't have to stress. So much for free education.

Today I went to my granddaughters play at Will Beckley elementary school. It was Amazing! The teachers really brought out the best in the children. The play was Finding Nemo and it was great! This is the second year I have been to my granddaughters play, and I love what the teachers do with the kids. The kids looked really happy and were all great in their parts.
After the play talking with the teachers and kids , taking pictures and Congratulating them was nice for the parents, kids and grandparents. I spoke with the teachers, I enjoyed the play and it was just a great time. Kudos to your school and talented teachers and students.

our family's overall experience with this school is not the greatest. while I understand the teachers do their best with what they have, there is nothing to keep little kids motivated to go, there are no field trips, no trick-or-treat (trunk or treat at other schools) no fun activities within the school. the ONLY event I have seen that is "fun" for the kids is the harvest festival and they do it so late in the year that it's always too cold.... everything is very un-organized and there is almost no family engagement. oh, and you only have 10 minutes of open doors to drop off your kids, and only 6 minutes to pick them up... it's very frustrating.

My child is currently a kindergartner. She often comes home and tells me about her teachers yells at her classmates and harshly tells them to put their head on the table. She says she yells at them a lot because they dont listen. As an adult I get that, but to kindergartners who are new to the school experience that teacher should have a lot more patience and if she cant she should not be a kindergartner teacher. Ive contacted the school and they refuse to switch my child to a different class, stating I need to write a complaint report first, give the teacher a chance to correct her behavior and then maybe the principal will allow the switch if the issue persists. I asked if this would be anonymous as I would hate for my child to have a target on her back from her teacher for being the one who spoke up. Of course they said no.
Ive also contacted the librarian regarding a school fee, she was so rude and short, unable to help and quickly tried to pass me off to the district. Also no surprise my child has told me her least favorite special class is library Bc the librarian is mean.
Seems like the teachers here are unhappy and should consider doing something else if this is the kind of experience they are giving to these sweet kids.
If any teachers are reading this, please do better.

A family member of mine just finished first grade. The teacher, was a bit pushy about certain types of work that was done But the most irritating, and uncalled for thing this teacher did, was make the kids write about how their weekend went. Many of these kids, do not have the means to go places to have something to write about, and this teacher kept bragging and boasting about how HER weekend went. These kids should not have HAD to write about their weekend, on paper, as this teacher called it "My Weekend News". What these kids DID do on family time, on the weekends was none of hers or the schools business. If the kids wanted to share what they did or how their weekend was, that should have been up to them to want, to tell it.
The only other issue I had was, whatever happened to kids being kids? Fractions, in FIRST GRADE? REALLY? And the schools wonder why by the time these kids get to Jr. High/high School they're already too burned out to learn.

I posted a review yesterday 3/25/14 and neglected to note that I am not a parent but a volunteer from the Rotary Club and work closely with the Adm. and teachers to raise money and implement many new programs etc.

As a CCSD substitute teacher, and Will Beckley volunteer, I've answered the call of the Principal in assisting the school in developing photography as part of the art curriculum, and I've assisted the school in providing additional educational and safety measures for the school not provided by the district. The photography program, with community donated materials, now has students entering their photographs in competitions. I'm lucky enough to be able volunteer my time and expertise for the betterment of the students. With each visit, I see a vibrant school, with students, teachers and administrators who care deeply for the students, and doing so much with so few resources. I encourage parents and other community members to take an active role, large or small, at Will Beckley Elementary School.
