Got bullied by staff. I now have anxiety about the new school I attend to regarding grades and Im self conscious about my personal likings. I also got an inferiority complex because of the council constantly comparing us (4th and 5th graders) to younger kids. The council was also in the military once and it really showed during group punishment. I also nearly committed because of this place.

High school review. Surprisingly negative experience. Teachers do not seemed concerned about the students academic progress at all. My daughter was drug searched the first day of high school while other kids continue to smoke pot in the bathrooms. Staff is unbelievably rude, and absences are entered when students are present. If you have another option for your high school student, seriously consider it.

I go to this school and in my opinion it is bad i ask for help for my teachers never help especially my math teacher she just gives us the answers and then moves on and on tests I am unprepared. They spend most of their funds on big stickers that get ruined the next day. Bullying is pretty common and some people threatened to shoot the school (but they don't want you to know that)
But that's my experience you can send your child if you like or don't just giving my opinion.

My kid’s have been attending this school for 5 years.
As soon as I found out they taught the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids, my decision was made.

This is what schools in -general are missing: character development. And Somerset understands the VITal importance of character development.

The teachers have always communicated effectively, even calling and texting if necessary.

They have a school social worker which is very valuable for counseling situations.

In the 5 years that my kids have attended, they have responded with empathy to issues such as bullying concerns and behavior problems.

I love that they offered back to school (safely) in the classroom. It’s a game changer having the kids go to school.

I am so grateful that I found Somerset for my kids!!

This school has a team that specializes in students learning dis vantages

Posted: September 11, 2020

There is always someone around the school and if bullying ever happens , is resolved in the same week.

Posted: October 30, 2018

The students are very good leaders with the programs we're given being trained to be a good example.

Posted: October 30, 2018

Yes I fact they do, and make it clear they're equal to the other students .

Posted: October 30, 2018

SomersetNlv probably never has problems with bullying.

Posted: October 30, 2018

Sadly with some of the good feedback I gave them this school has took my learning experience downhill. I truly feels like my teachers definitely don't care about me. Also my world geography teacher has made it absolutely clear that she doesn't like her students, or people in general, that Ms. Jennings doesn't care if you fail her class, and she won't help you with trying to bring your grade up. I say three out of the 15 middle school teachers genuinely care about me. SomersetNlv definitely needs to step it up I honestly feel like SomersetNlv is the worst Somerset school in Las Vegas Nevada.

Posted: October 30, 2018

Homework isn't clear, and doesn't go over what we're learning in class.

Posted: October 30, 2018

Teacher's at SomersetNlv make it clear that they don't care about their students, and never take the time to help a student.

Posted: August 23, 2018

Posted: August 23, 2018

My son was bullied and the principal denied the allegations. Found out that a boy was suspended for punching my son and I was never notified.

Posted: August 23, 2018

My goal for this review is prevention. My son attended Somerset from 2014-2017. He graduated from 5th grade at a 10 grade reading level and received honors for his English, math, and sciences. I was thrilled that he was selected for Somerset, even though I heard mixed reviews. I should have followed my gut. As I watched my sons grades slowly decline, I was advised to pull him from his honors classes and place him back into regular classes. I sought out counseling and parent teacher meetings to no avail. The answer that I received from the school board was that my son wouldn’t focus. I was an active volunteer for his three year stay at Somerset, hoping that my activity with the school would have a positive influence with his peers and teachers. In his final year, 8th grade, I met again with the principal and said I thought my son was being bullied. Since they have a zero tolerance policy, I was told that would be receiving updates from his teachers and the principal on the matter as a follow up. My son was barely passing at this point. His personality had become reclusive and I couldn’t get an answer as to what was causing this decline. As I began emailing weekly and meeting with the principal on multiple occasions, after he came home with a fat lip and stories on multiple occasions. I was assured that NO BULLYING was taking place. Teachers were actively watching him and nothing was seen. I was told that he had fallen during gym class and his complaints about being CHOKED (also during gym class) were being looked into.

After graduating from Somerset my son has forgone counseling and it is just now surfacing what he was going through. A boy had been suspended after punching him in the back (not only was I not notified when this happened but found out that this happened BEFORE I made a formal complaint.) This same boy was also suspended for throwing a chair during class, just missing my son.
To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. Please believe me when I say beware of sending your children here. I wish I would have stuck to my gut to begin with and pulled him from the school like several other parents had that same last year.

The teachers take into account all that is expected of the kids. Meaning, if they have a big test and is expected to study, then homework is minimal if any. My child is in 2nd grade. The homework was very appropriate.

Posted: July 23, 2018

This is possibly one of the worst places for your child to encounter school first hand. It starts out great, but if you are prepared to watch your child cry walking with his/her class to the classroom from assembly line with you not allowed to to walk them in, this is the school for you. If you are okay to have your child be crying all through recess, have a bleeding gash on the knee and be ignored by teachers and staff? then this is the school for you. There are some jewels for sure in terms of teachers and some staff members, but generally, the administrators are cold and some teachers don't care or they just wash their hands off and don't want to be involved. All these comments of lack of communication are true. They all know the words to say, but nothing changes for your child if he/she ever has issues especially if your child is just acting like a normal 5/6 year old with no IEP. Be prepared for your child to be labeled and done for. If you have a child who has generally mild personality, is able to sit still and does 0 noise level in the classroom whenever he/she is told, this might be the school for you. If you're prepared for your child to occasionally starve during lunch because someone misplaced their lunch for them, this might be the school for you. Your child complaining of a headache? Find out at the end of they day. Forget about being sent to the nurse because they don't believe him/her.

All staff and teachers need training on guidance techniques and on building strong relationships with the children. If you are seeking for a school that applies developmentally appropriate practices, this school is NOT for you. Take to heart the comments about how "suspension happy" this school is. It starts at kinder.

I saw a review saying how this school is concerned about the "whole child". They cannot be more WRONG. Character building? Forget about it. That seven habits they have is too much and too language driven to mean anything. Kinder Spanish class? Download your lesson plans yourself.
Socio-emotional growth? Bullying issues dealt with a ton of suspensions, with no conferences. Whoever wrote that review needs to go back and check on this school again.

That aside, you can try building relationships with this school community and it might work. Im talking being there as a "volunteer" almost all day especially if the school cannot handle your child in their premises.

Go somewhere else.

Agree with many of the previous comments. Lots of favoritism here and immature and unprofessional teachers and staff. No care for the success of the students. Pulling my daughter out for high school - no way I will ruin her education and future. Very unorganized and staff does not want to address issues. Response is generally that parents are required to track grades and keep all completed work! What a joke!! Sad that CCSD funds this place - use the money for magnet schools, which are great by the way! Do not go here!

This school was great but it has changed a lot. I noticed there's a lack of communication between the parents and the administration. The teachers (for the most part) we're great. The only issue was not getting emails back when I asked questions. I had no idea my daughter was failing math till I got a report card. Which brings it back to the lack of communication. When I tried to address issues with the administration but felt dismissed. I really want to work with the school so I can be an active part of my child's education but it's been difficult. Hopefully this can change.

Posted: November 16, 2016

I am beyond disgusted by this school. My 4th grade child has an amazing teacher and she has learned so much from him which is not my complaint in the least. What I am beyond disgusted about is the middle school. I have never seen such disorganization, lack of care for the children's well-being, and a we don't care attitude from a school before. My son is in 7th grade and his math teacher is an absolute joke, she speaks very broken english and very softly to the point the kids struggle in her class. They have no care to discuss what can be done to get grades better. Their zero tolerance for bullying is a joke!! My son was punched in the back 6 times in the middle of engineering class, in front of the teacher, and my son gets in trouble for defending himself. I have demanded his schedule be changed to get him away from this bully kid and the Vice P basically told me they don't do that! WHAT IN THE WORLD!!! I thought I was sending my kids to get a better education but instead my son is in danger, he hasn't learned a darn thing and the administration could careless about it. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE!!!! I am putting mine out as I type this!

Previously stated, the teachers attend multiple trainings, seminars, and instructional coaching. The teachers are always able to ask for assistance and they are granted it.

Posted: April 30, 2016

Each grade level is only allowed to assign a certain time period of homework. For example in third grade the homework cannot be longer than 30 minutes. In middle school, teachers try and will continue to get better at assigning 1 or 2 assignments that can span different subject areas. Everyone must remember that homework is an extension of what the students have learned. It allows students to go home relax, take a break and then complete an assignment that furthers their knowledge on what they learned that day. It also allows their family members to take more part in their child's education.

Posted: April 30, 2016

The school is adopting a new program called the "Leader in Me". This program will encourage all students to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and fairness. It will help students see the leader in themselves.

Posted: April 30, 2016

This school prides it self on truly caring about the whole child. The teachers attend multiple trainings throughout the year in order to further their own education. Students are taught to respect themselves and others. Students are given choices in their education which helps inspire more pride for their own education. The elementary lays the ground for students having great character, and middle school follows up by preparing the students for real world situations and college. This school truly incorporates the community and family members into the students education. Parents are encouraged to complete 30 hours of volunteer service, and community members are invited to different events on campus. The administrative staff cares about students and does give chances because they understand, kids are still learning and school is suppose to be where they can do that.

It is terrible parking is a joke, drop off and pick up is terrible. Teachers are not even truly engaged in my child's education. The design of the school is terrible shaped like a shopping center, and the classes are over crowed just like public school!

Posted: September 12, 2015

The school has poor communication skills. I am not sure how the principal is the principal. But I guess you are only as good As your head, where the teachers are concerned. They send messages home through children 5 yr olds to be exact. Teachers do not respond in a timely fashion to let you know your child's progress and wait until the end of the year to try and rectify things with little time left to make up work. And it seems their mainly concerned with outward appearances rather than a quality education.

I hate this school there is a lot of favoritism and teachers don't teach. kids are drinking and cussing at school there is teachers talking about religions and saying that they hate people from some religions. the teachers loose the kids work and blames it on the kids. the staff ( especially the middle school vice principle ) they never do anything about real problems.

Posted: April 17, 2015

Please avoid the stress of sending your child to this school . As a parent stated before its nothing but a pretty picture . Don't be fooled ! This school will only offer you and your child a negative experience . The teachers are incompetent they lose the children's work, and have no control over the classroom. The children (especially middle school) run completely wild. The students use profanity, bully, fight, and racist remarks against other students and substitute teachers. Nothing that works is done about this behavior. Children that should be expelled for violence among other things are allowed to attend this school after drinking alcoholic beverages in class and violence against teachers as well as students. There are several substitute teachers that will never substitute in the school again, because of the student behavior and staffs unwillingness to reprimand the children in and effective way. This school is declining rapidly, please don't be fooled your child's education and safety depends on it. Report this school

If your looking for a nondiscriminatory school with a safe learning environment, a caring staff, and faculty Somerset Academy NLV is a waste of time. I would love the see a background check on this schools staff. At first glance this school appears to be awesome, but look a little closer and it won't belong before you see their true colors. It's quite obvious that the school visits this website frequently and post fraudulent five star comments to up the schools rating on great schools website. Shame on you Somerset Academy (NLV)! .....There a plenty of parents that feel the same way I do, yet the school changes nothing . When you complain to the principal/staff they act as though your the only parent that's has an issue. The truth is there's a tremendous amount of parents that feel this way. I will be reporting this school to the CCSD as well as the charter school board of directors (775-687-9174).

I am so excited about my decision to bring my daughter to this school. The middle school teachers are amazing. They stay after school daily and work with the students and the teachers help out with the sports. My daughter has had a fantastic experience and loves to attend. I really appreciate the time the teachers take to help students and the lines of communication are always open. Kudos to all the middle school teachers. Thank you for all you do.

Posted: February 9, 2015

This is the second year my child has attended Somerset NLV. He has had great teachers both years. The teachers have taken the time to find out who he is and what he needs to be successful. There are always willing to talk to me and help me. I am very grateful my son attends Somerset NLV.

Posted: January 27, 2015

Disorganized. Teachers are not teaching. Favoritism. Discipline problems. Look elsewhere for quality education. If you just want a below average babysitter, then chose this campus. Sure it's a little better than a public school...a public school in Las Vegas that is! It is below the standards of public schools our family has attended and we are not some well-to-do family. I understand it's better than my children being punched in the face or stabbed, but why should we settle? Is this what we want for our children? I'm not impressed at all. Bullying. Profanity. Low expectations. Sounds like public school to me. It just "looks" pretty physically, plain and simple.

Posted: November 18, 2014

Very good school. Teachers are ver attentive and very easy to communicate with and same for administration

Posted: August 9, 2014

Somerset Academy of Las Vegas North Las Vegas Campus I think most parents assume that teachers at this school have been thoroughly checked out before being hired. When I voiced my concerns to the principal , I was given a very vague and condescending answer. The answer is NO. They do not fully check prior teaching history or references. At least not very good. I know of a teacher with a very disturbing track record and as a Parent that is something I would like to know before I send my children into the classroom. This is public info that every parent has a right to know as it can and definitely does affect the child. The teacher in question has had violations in more than one state and it is NOT Nevada. I felt the Principal just wanted me to be quiet and go away. I was not impressed with her communication skills. Parents, if you have questions about your Child's educators, I encourage you to seek answers on your own and not back down when it comes to your Child's well being.

I'm extremely schocked by all the negative reviews! My son has been a part of the Somerset family for 3 years now. I truly believe this school has helped my son both academically and socially. He was going to the public school in the area and failing miserably. We were thrilled when we got the acceptance. In my opinion, Somerset has so much to offer compared to the public schools. Smaller class sizes (he was in a class of 35 in public school), extracurricular activities, field trips, open communication (my experience over the past 3 years, elementary & middle), a diverse student body, awesome parent teacher organization and the ability to teach freely. I started the year with conferences with each of his teachers to introduce myself and give them insite on my "issues" with my son. I try to be very involved in his education even being a FT working mom. I noticed none of the bad reviews complained about their child not being educated properly. That say a lot to me. Like every school, there can be some improvements made but I appreciate what this school has done for my son and highly recommend them to everyone I meet with school aged children.

The administration in this school hands down is THE WORST Ive seen since weve moved here to Vegas 7 years ago. I wanted to give them a 1 star for admin and a 5 star for the teachers because its because of them that we didnt leave this school. Theres a new campus on Lossee opening up but we will not be guinea pigs 2 years in a row! Somerset NLV admin get your stuff together its a pathetic unorganized mess! Hopefully next year will be less painful to the new people coming in.

Posted: April 2, 2014

Last year was better....this new administration is terrible! I have tried to set up several parent meetings with no response. This school lacks focus and goals for helping new teachers. We are now transferring to another school. We wasted an important school year.

Posted: April 1, 2014

The prior review is clearly written by the current principal, or someone on her behalf. They are the only ones who use the phrase "we are great and getting greater", which is a tagline that was stolen from Kitty Ward Elementary school. This school is a mess with no organization,. Rather than admit mistakes, the school will cover them up, and has even gone as far as sending back dated emails to parents. At the beginning of the year I offered to help with several events. I was rebuffed by the principal and made to feel not welcome. Even the hours I have volunteered are not properly recorded by the office. It is the same with student absences. The record keeping at this school is shoddy at best. In the office there is also a huge bulletin board that lists each teacher's name. Below their names there are sticky tabs with the initials of each student in their class. These are color coded and placed in order of their current level (such as at risk, emergent, meeting skills, etc). To me this is a HUGE invasion of student privacy. While it does not say whole names, initials would be very easy to figure out which student they belonged to in any particular class.

Posted: April 1, 2014

My children have attended this school since it opened. I was extremely pleased with the school the first two years. This past year has been another story. The new administration is a disaster. The principal is a braggart, more interested in talking about herself and all her accomplishments, than doing what is best for the students or the school., Many of the returning families that I have known for several years are also dissatisfied with the current administration and are planning to leave the school at the end of this school year. It is a disappointment to have witnessed the decline in this institution. The principal also pushes her religious beliefs to the students, which is not acceptable.

Posted: March 31, 2014

This school is fantastic! The principal is an outstanding leader, the majority of the teachers is incredible, and the diversity of the students adds to the overall wisdom and growth of the school. I understand that some parents feel this campus has gone downhill, but I disagree. My children have been a part of this campus since the onset of the school, and I see only progress. There have been many changes, some of which have been difficult. I am positive that with time, patience, and hard work on the parts of every parent, student, and member of the faculty/staff this will become a top notch school. I do wish that more parents helped out around campus. It seems that 90% of the volunteering is done by the same 10% of the parents. I am so excited to be a part of Dr. Lea taking yet another school to a five star rating! We are great and getting greater!

Posted: March 30, 2014

I am a student who has been here for all three years. The first two years were amazing. I have disliked the current principal since the very first day when we had to go to an E-time for first period. Nobody ever informed us of that. The band class before me had 2 kids in it. Mine had 9, and the one after mine had 56. That is unacceptable. Now they even want to change the schools name probably to get all of the negative reviews off. There is very little communication and when there is it is rude. There was a change to the dress code and the staff acted like it was there the entire time. If the principal makes any mistakes she finds some way to ignore it. The rules for electronics are an absolute joke. We can't use them outside or at lunch because they say the school can be held liable if you break it even though the handbook CLEARLY states that the school is not responsible for your device. The middle school teachers are great but some of the elementary school ones sound horrible. Every Wednesday we do reading plus in English. It involves pressing the space bar if you see a C in a bunch of Os. DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL the other somerset locations in Las Vegas are great, NOT HERE!

Posted: March 10, 2014

The NLV campus has gone down bad. My kids have attended since the first year and it has been a pleasure not even the first year as bad as now, middle school kids fighting, kids getting picked on and complain to staff and it's like whatever, my child's teacher which I won't name is so childish better off a preschool teacher with her fantasies, front office is a huge joke, no organization the student aides do more work and are left unattended, lack of communication. I will not be returning next year and the assistant principal is a joke and a half. So sad as it was a great school till this year. Kids dress code is not enforced and try to get someone to email you back haha just don't hold your breathe.

Posted: February 28, 2014

The 'hands off' and 'zero tolerance for bullying' policies are not enforced at this school and incidents are not commonly reported to parents. When I volunteered, I watched children hitting and kicking without consequence constantly. My child was bullied constantly by another child in particular. Even after multiple complaints, administration did not ensure my child's safety, they simply promised to pull the offender out of class after incidents and not return the offender until they had 'calmed down' (at which point another incident would occur). We had no choice but to leave the school. Very disappointing.

The teachers in middle school love those kids so much! They want all to succeed. They push them to their limits, lovingly and tenderly, with encouraging words. The principal is involved with everything, and makes her presence known. She is easy to get ahold of, and returns calls, promptly. She always makes sure that everyone in her sight gets a hello, handshake, or a hug. Our elementary teacher has made my little guy who hated reading, or doing anything with the alphabet, come to love these things. I can't keep enough books on hand. There is a great No Bully tiolerance in place! We absolutely love it here! Thank you for being great, and getting greater!

We have been VERY happy with Somerset NLV. This is our second year here and our family has three children attending, in both the middle school and elementary grades. While there have been some growing pains with new campuses opening, resulting in new teachers, administration and students at *our* campus, we are very pleased to be attending Somerset and feel it is a great alternative to the public school system in Las Vegas. The administration is forward-thinking and accessible, the teachers are generally very engaged with their students and the atmosphere in general at the school is very positive. It will be nice when the playground expansion has been completed.

My son was accepted into Somerset Academy this year and after visiting the school and taking the tour we found the school to be unacceptable. It was a filthy mess in the hallways and the school is poorly funded with such a cry for a needed school library in which it had nothing on its shelves. We tried to get answers of what set Somerset apart from CCSD. The Principal stated that the teachers wanted to be there and that they were able to teach their own way and that we should go ask them. Also she mentioned the class sizes were supposedly smaller but they were no smaller then my sons class in public school. After looking and comparing statistics with this new chartered school, we found no merit or difference to switch him to this school.

Somerset has not lived up to the hype. We have been in school for 6 weeks and I have yet to see any work. Progress reports have been sent home without any comments or work to reflect the grades given. Our teacher shows up late for line up every day. Ist grade has been a huge disappointment. So much time is spent 'putting out fires' in the classroom, I have seen NO instruction. We have even had a 1st grader expelled already in our class. Somerset seems to have fallen victim to poor parenting that unfortunately seeps its way into the classroom. Our teacher is dysfunctional and highly unorganized. I do not think we will be able to 'wait it out' to see if these behavior problems and lack of administration follow up will be worked out. So sad! Another school has turned into a daycare, essentially.

My son has attended the Emerson campus for Full Day Kinder and 1st grade now. He is challenged academically and on an IEP, and I truly feel like the staff care about him as an individual and truly want him to succeed. They have gone above and beyond for him and us and are always in good communication. I highly recommend this school!!!

If you are lucky enough to get in, go here! It's a great school. Ms. Moore is the BEST Kindergarten teacher ever in the history of kindergarten teachers. This school has a happy atmosphere, and good kids from good families. There is so much parental involvement it's crazy! It's wonderful!

I am a Parent of three students at Somerset's Emerson Campus. This is a great school, with a great Principal, and a great environment. The reading program is incredible. My children have all excelled and love attending the school.

We are so fortunate to have found this school! We moved our son from another charter school and couldn't be more happy with that decision. He is challenged by the curriculum. The electives are fantastic, especially art! Not only do they complete art projects, they learn art history at the same time. The teachers and principal are always in contact with the families. I personally love that each family has to volunteer 30 hours as part of their childs enrollment. I am looking forward to many more happy years at this school with our son and daughter when the time comes!
