We’ve had our children at this school from kindergarten through third grade, and our experience has been great. The teachers truly seem to care about their students and take the time to recognize each child’s individual needs.

Our son’s teacher noticed that he was advanced and began giving him more challenging work throughout the year. By the end of the school year, she worked with the principals to develop a plan for him to skip a grade based on how well he was performing.

There was also a time when our youngest son had an allergic reaction and had to be taken to the hospital. Each of the principals called me separately to check on him, and they followed up again a few days later to see how he was doing. It genuinely felt like they cared about him and our family.

The school also hosts many events that give families an opportunity to spend time on campus, connect with one another, and enjoy activities with their children. It is a wonderful community, and Principal Tu is great.

We enrolled our kids at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain expecting a high-quality charter school experience. On paper, this school looks strong — solid ratings, above-average performance, and a reputation for academics .

But what we experienced as parents tells a very different story.

Where Things Broke Down

The biggest issue isn’t just academics — it’s consistency and decision-making.

We had two kids at the same school:

One received structured intervention and support
The other did not receive meaningful intervention at all

Yet both were subject to major academic decisions.

That raises a serious question:

How can a school justify high-stakes decisions like retention without consistently applying support systems?

The Leadership Problem

At the end of the day, this falls on leadership — specifically the principal, Cesar Tiu.

Parents are told this school focuses on individual student needs and growth. But when:

Communication is inconsistent
Support isn’t applied equally
And decisions don’t align with actual progress

…it creates a major trust gap.

Leadership sets the tone. And in our experience, that tone felt more procedural than student-focused.

Growth vs. Reality

One of the most frustrating parts:

We saw clear academic growth — real improvement — and yet the outcome still leaned toward holding students back instead of building on that progress.

That’s not just disappointing. It’s confusing.

Because if progress is happening, shouldn’t the goal be to continue momentum, not reset it?

What Parents Should Know

Before enrolling here, ask:

How are intervention plans actually implemented?
Are they applied consistently across all students?
How are major decisions like retention made — and documented?
How much transparency will you really get?

Because the answers matter more than the marketing.

Final Take

This school may look strong from the outside — and the data might support that in some areas.

But as a parent, what matters most is:

How your child is supported
How decisions are made
And whether leadership is truly accountable

Unfortunately, our experience raised more concerns than confidence.
