It hasn't been a good fit for our family. If you like small-town schools and don't mind the lack of diversity, have kids that excel at sports and grades then this place will probably be great for you. But if you're kind of a non-traditional kind of family, a little quarky, not really into the sports thing....you may not like it very much.

Most of the teachers have been very supportive, you can see that most of them truly care about the well-being of their students. However, there have been a few that rely too heavily on taking recess and lunch hour away when students don't finish their classwork. My child had particular problems with this during 4rth and 5th grade. She came from a school that used Responsive Classroom as a classroom management system, where they weren't allowed to take the whole recess away because a student hadn't finished their classwork. It was a big difference for her when she came to this school and suddenly she was constantly being punished because she couldn't finish her worksheets as fast as the other students. This has had a longterm negative effect on my child. Also, some of the staff at the school don't really even seem to like children. They yell at them so much, especially during lunch, controlling every movement, telling them where to sit, when to eat. This might be common for all schools now, though, it seems like they need to control a kids every move and decision because they're so afraid they will do something wrong or misbehave.

Granted, they are a small school, which is good for some things. But it's not a diverse school. It's primarily white, athletics are given a lot and I mean a lot of attention. Basically, if you're good at sports and can manage to make good enough grades to join the Junior/Honor Society then you've got it made. You'll have friends and opportunties. They don't really have any other clubs or after school opportunties at all for those students who are just average academically and don't really like sports.

The leadership has always responded whenever I've had concerns and have done their best to address things. Regardless, there are students that still get away with cruel and mean behavior to other kids. The middle school grades are the worst with this.

I feel like they are supportive for learning differences. I think what they need to work on and where the money really needs to go is with developing more support in the counseling department. They have a psychologist on staff but she doesn't actually see students unless their behavior is affecting their school work. For a communitiy where it can take a year to get into a certified child psychologist...this is really not helpful. They only have one other counselor. I think they need to implement programs that can assist students who are experiencing emotional difficulties, stress, anxiety, depression.

We have three kids here now and each of them are doing really well. We chose this school because of the incredibly small class sizes, supportive teaching staff and administrators, and the community feel. It's great to also have our middle schoolers and elementary schooler in the same place on the same bus schedule! The sports and activities are somewhat limited (there are only 3 sports) but they welcome all comers and have a full schedule and good support, especially basketball. Our kids love it at Sackets and as parents we have been very pleased overall. It's like having your kids at a relatively small private school but with the support services of NY state.

Our grandchildren attend here and have been warmly received by staff and students, even though they are ethnic minorities. We like the small class sizes and individual attention. Our only complaint is that the district web site often (maybe always?) doesn't work, so we can't see the calendar to know when our kids will have vacations. It's surprising that such a good school district would now have a way to communicate this online.

Our two daughters attended this school and have excelled at college after graduation. The faculty and staff at this school work hard to help all of the students.

I have three children in this school and two have some modifications to their curriculum to help them. There is a surprising amount of diversity given it is a k-12 in a rural farming area of northern New York. Due to Ft. Drum, there are not only biracial students, black stidents, but also hispanic and asian students. With only 400 kids in the entire school, its pretty impressive that there is any diveraity. The military is extremely welcomed and celebrated at the school, and the new kids are always introduced by their classmates at assemblies to help welcome them and include them. The staff is great, from the secrwtaries in the office to the custodians and teachers and support staff. People are genuinely friendly, the PTO is one of the most involved ive ever experienced as a parent or student and there are great supports in place to help with homework, tutoring and mentoring. The Principal and Superintendant are very involved, approachable and look to resolve any problems that arise within the school. I wouldnt want my kids going to school anywhere else and it is the main reason I would not move anywhere else while my children are school aged. To the negative comments posted, I am not sure their assessments were fair. I am not an insider in the community with a certain last name, yet have never experienced someone elae getting favoritism or preferential treatment in any meaningful way (i.e. classrooms, extra curriculur, etc). Highly recommended!
