My daughter was new to the neighborhood and came from a very small private school, so I was a bit concerned that she would have trouble adjusting to the new environment. However, she started here at the upper elementary school and has absolutely thrived. The teachers welcomed her with open arms, she's made many new friends, drastically improved her math/writing skills, and the academics have challenged her to be her best. I also love how they offer clubs and free tutoring through afterschool and weekend programs. The teachers are all really enthusiastic and want the students to succeed. The Academy consistently hosts family nights to get the whole household involved, and I truly believe we made the best decision when we took the chance to send my daughter here.

As a special education advocate, I recently attended an IEP meeting for a student at The Academy Charter School. Mrs. Smallwood, the student’s general education teacher, demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the student’s needs—particularly in the areas of executive functioning and academics.

Her professionalism, compassion, and commitment to ensuring the student receives the appropriate special education supports for the upcoming school year were truly commendable. It was clear that she not only listened to the concerns raised but also actively sought solutions to help the student succeed.

The Academy Charter School and Mrs. Smallwood both deserve a gold medal for their dedication to student success and their collaborative approach to supporting the student.

The teachers are nice and respectful. They help students in every way, even if they don’t deserve it. It’s fun to be here with kids from similar backgrounds. Though there is a lot of work, we still have different aspects of the school that we enjoy.

This school is a disaster. If you live in a school district that doesn’t have the best schools. This is worst!! This is like putting all the worst school districts combined. People think putting their children here is better but it’s just as bad. Keep them in your school districts. You’re way better off! Classrooms are not 15/1 ratio they have more than 30 students per class with unqualified staff.

My daughter attended this school for Kindergarten. It is a phenomenal institution. The staff and teachers are great. I moved out of State unfortunately and had to move her. I miss them already.

Over all the school is great academicly. My daughter has been attending this school since kindergarten and is now a junior. Every year she amazes her family from common core scores to high honors. She has never had any issues. Never had any bullying issues. The only issue she had over the years with her teachers is talking in class, much better now. I noticed since high school my daughter has had lots of homework. Girls basketball take the back seat to boys for the sports parents. Unfortunately there is No Pre-K level although the site says otherwise. I'm hoping they will soon start one. I recommend this school to a lot of parents I know.

This school always seems unprepared. This is my third year here and every year the first day of school appears to be their first first day of school. I find most of the teachers to be rude, lack appropriate communication skills and they seem to not care much about the progress of their students. I have had to complain about teachers in the manner in which they speak to children, the fact that children are not getting their questions answered properly and how fast the curriculum is being taught, often with many children falling behind. The Principal is often unresponsive and there is truly a lack of accountability. From the teachers to the Principal, they often ignore parent complaints and concerns and we are left to either just deal with it or take our children out of the school.

I am sorry i removed my child from public school to attend here ir has ben so much issues for about 2 years now i get a phone call everyday for simple issues it just seems as though they have no problem solving tactics and the teachers come of rude and experienced

The teachers have no patients with students they call you for every single issue , they dont care much about the progress of the children just making the school look good. staff is rude and it always seems as though your bothering them when you call.

Posted: February 3, 2020

they do not teach the kids any thing morally they just send them out if the class to contact the parents. or make the children feel as though they dont care about them if they dont behave to there liking.

Posted: February 3, 2020

Posted: February 3, 2020

all they do is call home for every issue they face no problem solving skills

Posted: February 3, 2020

They label all student conflict as bullying without first finding out the facts and talking to the students ,my daughter was being bullied they did nothing once she defended her self after telling the teacher multiple times they are now labeling her a bully.

The ratio of teachers to students (15:1) is a lie! There are close to 30 students in the class with teachers and assistants who are either not certified or some who only hold a high school diploma! Unbelievable. I would look at the homework and the grammar was a disaster. I found out through one of the teachers that one of the Kindergarten assistants was writing the homework. She had a HS diploma. No certification, no college, no masters. Why is this happening when there are so many qualified teachers out there? Standardized tests are all they care about which is a dying trend. A test is a blip in time and they use those scores to label students permanently. They punish students who don't excel in reading by excluding them from "gains parties". Ask the principal! When I wanted to pick up my child early to avoid her seeing this, the Dean ignored me! An awful school with leadership that is so overwhelmed and spread so thin. And why do teachers disappear in the middle of the year with no explanation? If you're being paid well, and have the support of your administrators, why on earth would you leave? An awful environment all around!

My son has been here since kindergarten things have definitely changed and not for the best in my eyes. They need a lot of improvement staff seems to be in to themselves instead of the children this is my child's last year there bc of the lack of improvements there no sports nothing there

One of the best Schools on long Island based on the common core results. Great school, they wear uniform which I like and the teachers and staff genuinely care for the student and wants them to be successful not just a school work but in life. I give them 5 stars with no apologies. I definitely recommend them.

Outside of the closed doors the school seems average.. based on the website and such but behind closed doors this school is a mess. There is obvious nepotism involved during the hiring process, with no regard to the children's needs. The turnover is real, just ask past and current teachers. Most teachers use this school for experience and go on their merry way.

The teachers are amazing hands down, but as for the new principal he needs to go asap. This school went from having a very intelligent, professional principal to a grown man who behaves as an adolescent, that cannot control his temper when speaking to another adult, such a man like this is not suited for the children of the charter school, they deserve a principal who can carry himself in a positive manner, with self composure.

This school is an amazing school academically, and teachers and staffs do the best they can with each and every student, if a child is giving trouble at school, I believe it's the parents duty to deal & fix that issue not the staff, they are here to help provide education... Academy has recently started to implement extra curricular activities after school which is great, I would love for them to add more sports & programs, such as swimming, Rugby, Soccer, Kendo, Track & Field, last but not least the STEM Program.

It's a great school academically. But if you're poor be prepared for your child to not be able to participate in some school functions such as, concerts and plays. In just one week they asked for $45. $15 for a spring production, $20 for a father/daughter dance and a $10 for a field trip all due in the same week and that's just if you have one child. I could only imagine the pressure a single parent of multiple children feel with the expense of this school.

My daughter has been attending since kindergarten. Great school academically. They have a lot of behavior issues but that stems from home. It is the job of the parents to discipline their children, not the teachers. Once everyone gets that into their heads, the schools and children would have better outcomes.

The Academy is a good school academically, but safety issues was my biggest concern and problem. Some of the teachers are inexperience, have no college degrees, and not capable of controlling the classroom's behavior.. In specials the kids are out of control and wild. The principal and deans show no concern with the safety of students when issues of safety and concern are brought to their attention. I would not recommend anyone to put their child in this school. I rate this school a one for major safety issues, and lack of care for the students.

Posted: March 14, 2016

Academically effective, but experience with classroom control and behavior issues very ineffective.. Most of the teacher have no control or experience in controlling the classrooms behavior. The classrooms are over crowded.

Posted: March 14, 2016

Homework is a bit too much, but it challenges the students and reinforces what they've learned through out the day.

Posted: March 14, 2016

The school shows favoritism to certain students. Some students are punish for defending themselves, and some get away with kicking, hitting, and punching other students. The school's principal and dean seem to only address issues they want to address. While other issue they sweep under the rug.

My son went to academy charter school. It is a great school.their learning system works even the school starts early and ends late. Anyway I can give them an "A"

Posted: January 3, 2014

So, maybe you should enroll in the school...Because your spelling and run on sentences are embarrassing!!! Who's going to trust your opinion? This school is way too overrated!!!

Posted: January 3, 2014

The Academy Charter School has qualified teachers and school leadership that genially care about the children they have been given the responsibility to teach. The school goes above and beyond to prep their students for the Commen Core exams. The Academy scholars are at the top academically in comparison to other elemanary schools on Long Island. My son has attended The Academy since kindergarten and I am very happy with the education and social skills he has received. Thank you Academy.
