As a member of the Taft Milette family, I am writing this openly and without reservation to express my deep disappointment and ongoing frustration with the culture and conduct we have repeatedly encountered at Mary Carey Institute. Time and again, we have attended school events only to be met with coldness, indifference, and a complete lack of basic courtesy, not just from the administrative staff but from the very educators entrusted with fostering a welcoming environment for students and families alike.

Not once have we been greeted by the principal or acknowledged by any teachers at these events. Instead, we are met with disinterested stares, rude expressions, and what can only be described as a palpable sense of exclusion. These behaviors are not isolated incidents. They form a consistent pattern that has made my family feel so unwelcome and uncomfortable that we have been forced to leave events prematurely. No child or parent should ever be made to feel like an outsider in their own school community.

I am particularly appalled by the demeanor of certain faculty members, including but not limited to the art teacher, whose attitude toward both students and parents has been nothing short of dismissive and disrespectful. It is unacceptable that individuals in positions of influence within an educational setting are allowed to carry themselves with such arrogance and disregard.

At this point, I am no longer willing to remain silent. I will be reaching out to the superintendent, filing a formal complaint with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, and submitting an additional complaint to the New York State Education Department. The environment at Mary Carey Institute has become toxic and emotionally damaging, and it is imperative that this situation is investigated and addressed at the highest levels.

My children deserve better. All children do. I refuse to allow this pattern of disrespect and exclusion to continue affecting them. We will not be attending any future events at Mary Carey Institute, and I urge other families to reflect on how they are being treated as well.

This is no longer just about disappointment. It is about accountability.

Sincerely,
Taft Milette Family

We have 2 children in MCI and we love it here. My kids feel at home in this school and we have had great experience with the teachers, communication and support.

We have had amazing teachers at MCI, who communicate with us regularly on helping our kids succeed when they may be struggling in a certain area, and giving them individual support based on their personalities and learning styles.

Out of 4 children, 3 have attended MCI, and the 4th will start Kindergarten next year. The teachers are wonderful and will work with those parents who are willing to take on the responsibility necessary to ensure their child's success. The only drawback I've had ever was knowing when things are planned, as the PTO and School District Calendars hardly ever match up (vacation days, holiday breaks, field trips, etc.) Minor things when planning ahead. MCI has been great to my kids, and to me personally. MCI needs more parent involvement, but I guess that's just something that is expected due to the areas class of residents.
