Most of the high school teachers are unbiased and very nice people who love their jobs and their students. Some are there just to push their political agenda. Your students grades will reflect whether your childs (or families) perceived political affiliations line up with the teachers.

There is very little diversity in Lewis County. Students are forced to subscribe to school mandated rules and guidelines. Very little time is spent encouraging the development of quality traits in students. It is easier to rule with an iron fist than to invest time in teaching respect or compassion for others. Do as I say or else! would be an excellent school motto.

The new (2019) superintendent is very out of touch with the student body and the community despite the fact that she is a returning graduate of LACS. The administrators do not adequately supervise the in-class conduct of their teachers which has created an atmosphere of fear and distrust between teachers and certain pupils. Political bias in the classroom is a major issue within the middle and high schools.

A significant portion of the school budget is invested in special needs students. Many receive one-on-one supervision and care.

The school counselors do try to mitigate the bullying epidemic and for the most part they have a pretty good handle on it. The high school administrators are swift and severe with punishment for certain students while others receive a light reprimand, if anything at all. Small town nepotism is alive and well at LACS and bearing the right (local) last name will carry you far.

Graduation day can not come quickly enough! We are actually weighing the advantages of moving out of the district. We miss Mrs. Steckly!

Six hours of homework per night plus a minimum of 4-6 hours each weekend is not uncommon for some students. There is very little family time or time for extra curricular activities for students who wish to maintain a decent GPA.

The school is terrible as well as the community. Lots of bullying goes on in all grades, the teachers etc. will lie and say they've addressed issues, when they in fact did not. Because 98% of these people are related they won't address any negative issues directed at their children or relatives. They will drive you out, and make you feel unwelcome until you leave.

If your student is able to reach out to their teachers with respect and sincerity, is able to work as an individual who wants the best out of their education and understands that the world will not make things easy for them, then Lowville Academy is a terrific school. Filled with some great teachers who really want the best for their students coupled with the smaller class size it's a great fit for many. There are some issues, however any school has issues. The problems with Lowville Academy are overshadowed by the successes of the school itself. One could say that the decline in student ambition is the cause for the schools problems.
