As someone who worked in this charter school, I think many parents assume a charter school is automatically better because of the name. The reality is often much more complicated.
Many students in the lower grades arrive unable to read, count, or grasp basic concepts. Some are still learning English and arent being taught in their native language. Imagine trying to learn math when you dont fully understand the language your teacher is speaking.
At the same time, teacher turnover is incredibly high. There were days when I felt like I wasnt doing enough for my students and wanted to quit. Many teachers are overwhelmed, burned out, and simply trying to make it through the year.
People dont always realize that many charter schools hire teachers who are not yet fully certified. For some, its a stepping stone to gain experience before moving on to districts that offer better pay, better benefits, and more stability.
The issue isnt the students they deserve every opportunity to succeed. The issue is that the challenges are often much greater than parents realize, and the charter label alone doesnt guarantee a better education.

Poor leadership, no real communication with families, high staff turnover at all of their schools. The elementary school is located in a very unsafe location (in close proximity to a mens shelter) I do not recommend anyone bring their student to Growing up green, do your research and go elsewhere.

My son was neglected in 1st grade remote learning and now they want to hold him back from the 3rd grade because he wasnt able to catch up. They did a good job of indoctrinating my Christian child that he could wear a dress but failed to teach him math or to read. Avoid at all costs! Also if you have a special needs child they are always out of compliance and dont have sped certified teachers as required.

My son started with this school in Kindergarten of the fall of 2020 when the school was fully remote. He had Ms. Blake Morgan who did a phenomenal job teaching . I was highly impressed. Her lessons were very structured and she was very patient. It is not an easy task to teach children that age remotely but she did an awesome job. The curriculum is organized and it seems that the staff works cohesively to make sure students are growing academically and meeting standards. They are also concerned with the social emotional growth of the child and this is evident in the curriculum and
the lessons that are taught. The school does a great job communicating with the parents as they have a school newsletter that is emailed on a weekly basis. Even when they are operating remotely they have various activities such as movie night and potlucks to offer families to keep them engaged and connected to the school community. This year my son is attending 1st grade fully in person and he has Ms. Uzma and Ms. Workabeba whom both are also phenomenal teachers. They send me pictures of my son updates of the work that he is doing in the classroom. They are very much aware of areas in need of growth and his strengths. They are able to communicate this in a way that allows all of us to set and work towards both appropriate academic and social emotional goals . I appreciate the system in which homework is given. My son recieves a packet everyweek with math, reading, and writing tasks. This is very helpful and it also gives me a good understanding of what he is learning in the classroom. The school leaders at this school are extremely pleasant and the dean Ms. Horne is very pleasant and helpful as well. Often times in the mornings a staff member Mr. Barrino would be outside greetiing parents and giving encouragment to students as they are walking in the shcool building. This is great to see as a parent and makes students feel welcomed and supported. From what I can see, at least with the teachers my son has, the students are encouraged to do their best and the teachers look for ways to work with students and their various learning needs and challenges. The only downside I would say is the location of the school becuase it is near Jamaica avenue which is very busy and if you drive it can be challenging to find parking especially in the mornings to drop off your child. However, all the great things that I have mentioned about this school obviously outweighs that downside.
