I think the the school district should pay close attention to this school amd I am very serious. There are some many staffs working there who mostly doesn't do anything and you ask for help. They need to justify their paycheck, there is not communication with the transportation staff. You keep calling, sending emails, and nothing happened. They cover themselves, hide information and doesn't care about scholars safety. The worst decision ever. When they finally answer one of your emails is just to tell you yo call them in a couple of days to see what they can do about it.

My scholar is currently going to merrick academy charter school and from my own experience, I can say that it has not been pleasant. Most of the teachers are very disrespectful to the students they yelled at them in a a very uncomfortable way that they even make some of them cry. In front of the parent they look friendly, but the reality is something else. When you need help, staff keep sending you to other people like a ball and at the end of the day you don't et the help you need.
When you complain about staff, they cover their disrespectful behavior among them and then pick on or harass your scholar just because they say something. PARENTS always ask your kids how was their day at the school make sure they feel comfortable about telling you what happened in their schools with the students and the staff. Definitely this school is one of the worst.

Horrible school
Very unorganized staff from the paperwork, to the communication. Bullying is ridiculous and the repercussions are a joke so the situations arent rectified. They send home a bunch of work without properly explaining it in the classroom.

My daughter struggles with math and it is unfair that during parent teacher conference that the parent is told. The teacher then hands over a folder with all of the childs exams. How can I help my child with something that was graded months ago? The class is already on a different section in that subject!!!

The teacher sends the child home with a weekly packet. It would be beneficial if there were a textbook so that parents know what to work with the child next. My daughter is in the third grade and the teacher is all over with the math. Division, fraction, adding and subtracting three digit numbers and now back to fractions.

The teachers can do a better child at disciplining the students. My daughter was being taunted by a another student for months. I asked her if she told the teacher and the teacher would ignore or punish my child for telling the child to leave her alone. My daughter ended up taking matters into her own hands when the other child hit her, my daughter hit them back and was given lunch detention for a week. The teacher had then notified me through voicemail and 5 mins later was unable to get in touch with her. Same thing happened when I returned her 2nd grade teachers call, they never and I mean never return calls!!if it werent for work, Id be going up to the school.

5/10 I expected much more from this school. Having a substitute teacher every month for a few days jeopardizes my childs education

I like the Principal Dr. Valburn, I am not sure about the AP's and Deans though. They don't seem very effective. Last year my daughter was hit in the head with a computer (she is okay); I got a call after 4 stating just that "your daughter was injured today, she was hit with a computer." When I asked about details the AP that called said she didn't know and could only tell me that...WHAT?!! was the first word I said before I went off on the AP.

the school really encourages respect and character, they have spirit week and all!
Posted: February 3, 2017
the teachers seem to really be invested in the child's learning. they communicate everything
Posted: February 3, 2017
as a teacher myself homework is suppose to support the child and let the teacher know what the child is struggling with, I don't think 7-10 pages of HW for a child in 1st or 2nd grade supports anything, actually it is a turn off to the child and the parent.

the school has a good sense of community spirit, the teachers communicate via text and keep parents informed. however there are a few things it needs to work on like: the teacher turn- around teachers are always leaving; an after-school program the school day ends at 3:45 and no after school; the school is so numbers driven with a strong focus on test scores; and they give sooo much HW you might as well say you home school your chil too... they also assign 2 major projects at the same time I have experienced this more than once!!! This becomes a real burden when you have more than one child in the school. I wish I had a better alternative to send my children to, but the surrounding schools are much worse.

Teachers communicate with parents let parents know were a child is in there learning e.g. what area the child is strong or week in and how we as parents can work on it , give update what is happening in the school and area they are working .

Merick Academy has come a long way, and are getting better everyday. I almost removed my child from the school at one point, but the Ms. Griffin and my son's teacher Ms. Danielle Spence worked with my child and I and I thank God I waited. I am sure they will keep on getting better as they strive to make every child's education experience worth while, while they get the very best education. Way to go Merrick Academy!

My child has attended Merrick Academy since 2009. Merrick has definitely had its bumps along the way however I have to say that this year has renewed my confidence in Merrick Academy and reminded me why I chose this school. Dismissal has been going on smoothly and the teachers are just amazing with the kids and work very hard with them. My son benefitted greatly from their extended Saturday school and the ELA carnival was one of his favorite moments this year. Field day which was held today for the upper grades was also a joy for me to participate in and all of the kids, teachers and parents seemed to have a wonderful time. As for the facility they are moving and will be in a facility with a full gym next year so physical Ed taking place in the classrooms will no longer be an issue. I personally love this school and am happy my son attends. Happy Parent!

I started at this school from when it first opened in 2000 and went all the way up to 6th grade. I loved it when I was going there. I never had a problem with any teachers. But now, my sister does there and I must say, Merrick has fallen off. I dont know what it is, but I feel like everytime I go in there, it feel like I'm surrounded by a bunch of wild animals. There is no doubt a control problem between the kids and the students.

I am very disappointed in Merrick academy. Communication between parents and staff are not promoted there. their dismissal is unorganized and safety is a issue. They do not have an open door policy in the school. You have to make an appointment to see the teacher for your kids report card, kids progress in class and they do not allow parents to view their children routine in the classroom. There is no gym, the gym are held in the class room. The children have no physical activities during the day. I hope Merrick Academy improve because these kids are getting short changed in both their education and the location of their school.

VERY MATURE RESPONSE WHAT A SCHOOL I FEEL THAT WAS UN CALLED FOR IT SHOW THE MATURITY LEVEL OF THE TEACHERS UNDER THE OLD REGIME.

You forgot to include how the school is going to financially survive. You made great points but to start over, you got to have funds. So I ask, how is this school going to pay good teachers like you a salary? Former concerned Teacher who glad one left!

I am currently a teacher at Merrick Academy. It is difficult to find the solution for the years of corruption stemming from Merrick's Board of Trustees and their contractor "Victory Schools." it really is a shame that charter schools like Merrick Academy are being run by businessmen, and not educators. They are usually lawyers or politicians...not truly concerned with our students best interest's. Its difficult to go to work everyday when you are surrounded by negativitey and poor managment. Here is the simple solution. Remove the current board, terminate relations with Victory Schools, and start fresh with the right leaders inplace to ensure a quality program. -Merrick Academy Teacher currently seeking another job

I have been a parent of Merrick Academy since my daughter was in the first grade. My oldest daughter has graduated from Merrick and is now doing very well in middle school. I cannot believe what is going on in this building. This is a school of excellence that treats the teaching staff like rabid dogs. My daughter is bright and has great teachers, she did very well in the social studies test. When I come to PTA meetings and board meetings I hear the leadership complain about the teachers. I say what are you complaining about? They are tremendous. All I see is unhappy people. Someone should do something before we lose the teachers that help our children perform. I worry about my daughter for next year?
