I'm a student at the John Rex JUNIOR HIGH, this review is not towards the elementary. But towards the Junior high. First off, the principal/teachers. The principal at this school is in my opinion not good, though she can be good at times, she doesn't handle situations well. For example, I'm a very accident prone person, I get injured a lot. one time I bruised my tailbone and sprained my ankle playing soccer, when I went to the doctor because it hurt to much to move, the doctor told me I needed to stay inside and not participate in recess, next day I stayed inside the office for that day. The principal walked in and kicked me out of the office and said I was "fine and the office is only for sick people". She kicked me out the office 8 times during my recovery period, the checkup after the deadline, the doctor told me that I was actually worse. Another problem with the principal is that she does basically nothing about bullying. For example, one day I had a not so good haircut, that day I wore a hoodie, during a transition between classes, a student tried pulling off my hoodie and ended up lacerating my eye leading to permanent damage, when me and my parents asked the principal about it, she avoided doing anything about us and just told she'd look into it. The student never got in trouble. She does nothing about anybody who bullies me as well. Next, the electives. We're over here funding unnecessary electives like esports, doing the math, each PC could cost about $1000, and we have almost ten. Not including monitors, mouses, keyboards, and pads. This elective is teaching us nothing useful in life. While when we moved into the basement of the Carnegie building, the performing arts elective which is what I do for a living and plan to major in and do professionally in the future was abolished. Though eSports is fun, it doesn't teach us any life skills, though it could be considered bias, we don't have Spanish, which I think is a necessary for schools because it's USEFUL for people to at least know two languages. Next is the building, to keep it short. We practically live in a basement, I shouldn't walk out of the building and be blinded by the sunlight, that just sounds wrong. I could write at least two more reviews on this school. The only good thing about this school is the nice teachers.

This review is about John Rex Jr. High.

I've been at this school since Pre-K and I haven't had a good experience since elementary. First, the staff don't help children with learning disabilities, and believe that there is nothing more important than good grades. They don't care if you're having a bad experience with your classmates, teachers, etc. Children with learning disabilities are treated the same as the rest. They have classes for higher students, but don't help the students with learning disabilities. The teachers at the Jr. High are kind, and truly care about their students. They help kids when they need it, and allow students that want to work ahead, to work ahead. The safety in this school is very slim. Whether its safety against bullying or safety against others. When we're out in public, they keep strangers away. But between other students, they discipline students for fighting, but don't do anything to stop it. This school struggles with bullying a lot, but the higher-ups don't do anything to prevent it. They sit and watch, and don't do anything to help. They don't speak to family unless it's for something negative. They don't tell parents/guardians about good behavior, grades, etc. It's only negative. The staff focus on what students wear when they should focus on their learning. Many students get sent home and and up late to school because of it. This school took away the music room for detention, just for them to not use it. They took away performing arts, music, and more and replaced it with electronics, detention, etc. They're taking away things that are better for the students, and replace them with things that are bad. They take away our opportunities and blame us for their actions. They say our rights are privileges, and take them away constantly. This is not a good school, they focus on the wrong things, and don't make a good learning space. I do not recommend.

My daughter is in kindergarten and even during a pandemic she has flourished! We feel so grateful to be a part of this amazing school. The staff is kind and all seem to know the children. My daughter’s teacher is the most patient and kind person with good communication with the parents. I absolutely love the specials classes that they have (Spanish, art, music, stem, PE). I cannot say enough wonderful things about this school. We love it!

My daughter loves John Rex School, and her teachers. We have a very positive experience so far. What we like about the school are (1) the STEAM curriculum, (2) utilizing different facilities in downtown like the library, myriad garden, and museum of art, (3) caring teachers with effective teaching techniques, (4) extra fun courses like Coding, Spanish, and Music, and (5) strong community and parent involvement with the school. It's nice that John Rex is located in downtown OKC because it is easier to be more involved, and attend school activities during the week for parents who work downtown.

My kindergartener gets 1-2 homework a month. The amount of homework is just right. The quarterly progress report is very helpful because it helps me know which topics to practice at home. Plus, her teacher sends monthly helpful tips on how to encourage learning at home through ClassTag App.

My daughter loves her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Stephenson. I'm very thankful for having such a loving and caring teacher.

I've volunteered in many class events like the mystery reader, Halloween, Christmas party, etc. I've seen that the kindergarten kids are respectful and kind to one another.

The principal is approachable and using the ClassTag App helps with line of communication between the school and parents.

With a 20:1 student to teacher ratio, I believe my daughter's teacher does her best with each child. I also believe it is my job as a parent to help my child be on par with her peers.

We've had a problem with one or two kids over the years and every time I pointed it out the teachers stayed in touch about it and made an effort to talk to the students and address problems properly.

I don't know if it's a school wide thing or not but my daughter has not had regular homework the last two years and i LOVE it. She use to come home with work in Kindergarten and I don't think kids that age should have to do homework. Her math and reading test scores keep improving w/o homework

My daughter and I have loved this school. She will only be here for another year but it is by far the best school she's attended (we've done okc public and private schools as well).

Tons of bulliying going around. Dean of Students is a bully to students and head of the school only has his favorites.

Location is great but when it gets down to it the amount of kids on IEP because the first two years they had no clue how to run the school now all of these kids are behind. Look at the turn over each year is terrible. The board should pay more attention on how this school is actually being ran rather then letting the head of the school do whatever he wants. Parents get kicked out each year the tier system is a joke. They only let in people they know just like they hire only teachers they know. School personal should not be just white blonde people.

Most of the teachers at John Rex are very good and very caring. However we had two years of teachers that were new to the school and were overwhelmed by administration to the point that it affected my child's education.

The way students are being treated at this school behind the scenes is not okay. The board needs to hold the leadership team accountable just like students are.

My child was a child with a learning disability and instead of working with him they made it such a problem we left.

This school has been so amazing for my son. He enjoys going to school every single day. The teachers are so attentive and genuinely care about each one of their students. Cannot wait until this Fall when my daughter will get to attend as well. No complaints. If you are lucky enough to get a spot at this school do not take it for granted. Just wonderful!

My daughter has attended this school since she was in kindergarten. This year will be her third year and we are just as excited for this year as we were the first! This school is exceptional not only in its diversity, but in the different methods of teaching it incorporates as well. We have been very impressed with virtually everything John Rex has to offer and has done for our daughter. We are beyond thrilled our daughter can call John Rex Charter Elementary her school!

This school has been a great experience for my two children that attend. The downtown atmosphere allows them to explore all that OKC has to offer. Downtown library, art museum, local businesses and a wide variety of activities. They have grown in ways I never expected.

LOVE this school. Thankful everyday my son attends. Small class size allows better quality teaching, their entire approach to education is different, & in a good way. Hands-on learning, amazing staff, I could go on & on!

We chose this school based on the academics and location. This is our son's second year and we couldnt be more excited. Our son is in Kindergarten and already knows how to read (small books) add and subtract, count money, measuring with ruler and tape measure, and he takes a spanish class. The staff is amazing and very patient and organized. The YMCA is who does the before and after school progam. They are absolutely phenomenal. Our son is learning to be a very well rounded person due to us making the decision to place him in this school. Our family loves this school so much we hope they build a mid to high school so that we can keep the same values and morals going. Great job John Rex Charter!

We chose to transfer our son into this school becuase of the promise of individualized learning plans and STE(a)M curriculum and could not be happier with that decision. Becuase the school is so new, allot is yet to be seen but the progress our son has shown and his response to the PREK program here has been remarkable. I think what this charter is trying to accomplish is doing great things for the children and future of this city.
