I have several children enrolled in the district, and I can't say enough positive things about their experiences. They have been helped with emotional issues by their teachers and counselors, given opportunities to excel from GATE instruction as well as regular classroom instruction, regularly encouraged by enthusiastic teachers and principals who expose them to different programs and new ways of instruction, while keeping learning fun and exciting with special programs and fun themed days, etc. I have worked in many of the school districts in the surrounding area, and chose the Avonworth area to live primarily because of it's school district.

The school sweeps all of its problems under the rug. There are drugs here, cheating, bullying and nepotism. Go to Quaker Valley.

We moved to where we are 10 years ago because of the school district. Once you leave the elementary school it is straight down hill from there. Questionable practices by the now Principal is just that. Parents are informed, usually, by teachers on concerns of their childs performance in class. Getting any extra help or ideas to help your child is never offered. If your ideas aren't convenient for the teacher well tough luck for you. So after paying your thousands of dollars in school taxes be sure to have more to have a tutor on your payroll. You will have a second job searching the PA laws to know exactly what help they are required to offer & ask about it specifically or you won't be offered it.

This school is a shell of what it once was. Around 2002, the trouble started, when the talented administration was forced out, and the current one, with its obsessive focus on punitive punishments and curriculum focusing on teaching to the test was forced in. Too many teachers are inexperienced and lack the ability to manage a classroom, and one-third of seniors graduate and go on to require remedial-level courses at college. By contrast, in the 1990s, Avonworth graduates were lauded for being among the best prepared first-year college students in the state. Its middle school is good, but skill gaps become apparent in the 9th grade, demonstrating that the administration prioritizes teaching to the test over true academic mastery. All the PowerPoint classes and senior projects in the world cannot replace the comprehensive liberal arts education this district gave up when it sent good teachers away on early retirement. Send your children to North Hills or North Allegheny if you want them to enter college well prepared, because this school will not get them where they need to be.
