I had lots of great teachers at this school, however the ones that did not offer me the support when I needed it the most is enough for me to give it one star. They can advocate for mental health all they want but I never felt more unwelcome and disregarded than at this school.

There is so much homework, but it is all geared to standardized testing. There doesn’t seem to be much actual learning that takes place... more of a regurgitation of facts for standardized tests.

Too many teachers play favorites and the student to teachers ratio is completely inaccurate. The typical class size is 20+!

There is a great deal of bullying that happens in this school and it is rarely addressed. Children who teeter on the edge or are slightly “different” can be subjected to relentless harassment.

Leadership is consumed with standardized tests and test scores.

If you have a child with a learning disability it can be extremely difficult to actually get help for your child to succeed in this environment.

I had two children go through this school and I was disappointed at every turn. Too many students fall through the cracks and bullying is never dealt with or taken seriously. Too many teachers play favorites and if you are not a person of means, your concerns fall on deaf ears.

The student to teacher ratio listed is a lie. In raw data it may be true, but in terms of actual class sizes, this school is closer to a 17-20 to 1 Student to Teacher Ratio.

School makes no effort to instill morality or good citizenship and does nothing to discourage behavior that induces harm on children who are not psychologically equipped to handle adverse social situations.

School is run by people who lack any understanding of nuance and use Stereotyping and Victim blaming to avoid dealing with serious social problems at the school. Social Hierarchies play a prominent role in determining student discipline and opportunities.

This schools idea of supporting students with learning differences is to put them in a room by themselves in the back of the school with no expectation of these students achieving a greater understanding of the material.

This school does nothing to discourage or punish bullying. I have personally known six different students across the past twenty years who were bullied so consistently and harshly that they incurred significant psychological damage and were pushed out of the school by administrators looking to sweep the problem under the rug. Most of these students had to involve lawyers to force the school to provide an adequate alternative education for these children.

My personal experience was pathetic. As someone who has consistently been ahead of the curve in all forms of academics, I graduated this school with less than a 2.0 GPA because no effort was put in to encouraging me to make any effort to participate in academics. I was consistently stuck in classes to learn information I had already known for years prior to starting high school and most classes consisted of nothing but receiving and reviewing homework and taking exams. For my part, I opted to sleep through nearly every class rather than subject myself to the constant stream of busywork heaped upon the students.

I had a bad experience at PHS. I was bullied by several teachers and students. I have cut all ties to PHS because it was the worst 4 years of my life.

Most homework is busy work and adds more stress to students. Even AP courses.

Many students cheat, especially in AP classes. There is a sense of entitlement with many students.

As a student at Portsmouth High like most I was not too enthusiastic about being there, but now that I look back I could not have gone to a better school. After graduation I went to college, married, and sent my daughter to PHS. My daughter has also attended college. Thanks to PHS I have done well in life and thanks to the music program I have made a good living as a musician. Could not ask for a better school.

I went to PHS, wasn't a great student. But 30 years or so later I can appreciate what they've done for me. I moved, married, divorced etc. Ended up in Newport. Had the opportunity to move back to Portsmouth and put my sons in PHS. I jumped on that opportunity as quick as I could. Because if I didn't my youngest would have been a drug dealer in Newport! If you are a student writing these comments, my suggestion to you is re-read your comment when you graduate. I'm not a fan of most of the snotty people in Portsmouth, but my kids got an excellent education and succeeded in their adult lives.

Most teachers here are really nice, but if you take honors they use that as an excuse to give you an excessive amount of homework. The students, however, are awful. I am almost positive majority of the school is doing or has done drugs before. Most of the senior class definitely has and has been confirmed on social medias. Also many students drink (also confirmed by social media) and have already lost their virginity.

Teachers and administration care more about standardized test result boasting than they do about individual students success and development

Teachers go out of their way to get students the most punishment possible. In addition, they have a skewed view on disciplinary actions and commonly let bias allow students to get away with missing work and get other privileges not given to others

If you are military dont expect them to put out the welcome mat. I observed teachers specifically targeting the "new" kids.
