I was a student here. First of all, did not care when I said a boy at the school harassed and tried to send me bad photos. They punished me the same way they punished him. Multiple bullies I dealt with, racism, and even more. I do NOT recommend. Please do your child a favor and look at other options for schools. It will honestly make their mental health worse, coming from a former student. The teachers were great, very nice and supportive, I'd say about 70% of teachers I had in my two years of going were pretty nice and awesome.

When my daughter attended Fort Mill Middle School she had a bully. This bullying made her life miserable, and my daughter would cry at times. The teacher called us halfway through the year to tell us my daughter was unmanageable, and was going into special ed. The truth of the matter was, she wanted to protect the bully because the bully was a teachers daughter. We withdrew our daughter and she had to homeschool until two years ago. Our daughter is now 17, in college and is transferring to university in the fall to become an attorney. What is she going to do? She plans to protect children from, among other things, schools like this. Im so tired of schools consistently protecting bullies to protect their reputation, but in this case it worked out well for my child. Shes two years ahead of schedule. I still cant recommend this school though, because the credit for her success had NOTHING to do with this school.

The administration does not step up to do something about the bullying, mistreating from the students and teachers, and violence that happen occasionally. The punishments are not enough at all, they let the students off with no warnings. Real example: A student SA multiple female students, and only got 3 days of lunch detention. On my personal opinion, that is unfair to all the victims, and letting that student go off like that is just no how you're supposed to deal with serious things like this. The principal doesn't do anything except stand around to make sure the students don't act up, and the assistant principals so the same but more aggressively. The teachers there are careless, mistreat students a lot, and doesn't even take 1 minute to help out a student that is going through something. I am still a student there, I'm leaving after this year. This is a heads up, cause I don't want anyone to walk through those halls for the first time and clueless. Especially the fact there's is multiple rich white kids that mistreat other students just aswell, but they are let off easily because of their color. Other than white, you would be given consequences. The school is very biased, racist, sexist, homphobic, and mind abusers

The school doesnt support kids with learning difficulties/ differences. Minor infractions get kids sent to ISS without the ability to access their daily classwork and schoolwork, sending them further behind. Many teachers are not supportive and ignore the students IEP. There are a few excellent teachers at the school, but it doesnt make up for the lack of supports.

FMMS is absolutely HORRIFIC. The bullying is out of control and the administration has done NOTHING about it. Children are bullied on an hourly/daily basis at this school while teachers turn a blind eye and never intervene. Blame is then placed on the child being picked on. Nobody takes responsibility at this school. There are multiple physical/verbal altercations daily and a male assistant principal that isn't harsh enough on punishment. The administration is to blame. This school needs training on bullying and a serious school staff shake-up, starting with a new assistant principal to get this school in line with the surrounding schools in the district.

Were it not for the mountains of homework assigned to my student, I would have rated FMMS a bit higher. Communication from teachers and administrators to parents is spotty at best.

Homework should supplement and reinforce what was taught during the class day. In my opinion, homework should never take longer than a school day lasts. FMMS assigns homework that had my honors student working from 4 PM - midnight most nights.

The teachers are wonderful with the students, however, they do not effectively communicate with the parents. The teachers also do not keep their webpages up to date so that students and parents are easily able to keep up with current class happenings.

It depends on the teacher. There is no uniformity at this school for homework policy. My child has teachers who rely heavily on homework which takes over 3 hours on some nights following a full day at school. Additionally, tests are supposed to be avoided on days of other tests, yet this rarely happens. My child has up to 3 tests in 3 different subjects on one day. Sadly, many teachers love worthless and ineffective worksheets.

Again, depends on the teacher. Some are great, while other, not so much. Many have a teach from the front of the classroom approach. You can walk into almost every classroom and see desks lined up like factories. There is no creative or collaborative teaching at all. It's pretty much where fun and creativity go to die.

This school is quick to discipline heavily with in school suspensions. It appears they have skipped detention all together in favor of putting kids in isolated rooms for 6 hours. This doesn't work and I'm not sure why this approach is used as often as it is. There are better ways to approach discipline but it takes some effort which is lacking.

New principal this year which may be promising and he is not a local from Fort Mill, thank goodness. Hopefully being from the outside this school will see some creative and innovative teaching approaches this district so desperately needs and he will weed out the teachers who need to move on. We shall see. So far, nothing seems to be standing out. but willing to give it another year since he is new.

Overall, not terribly impressed. Again, hoping the new principal will be brace enough to really make this school stand out in the district. Teacher turnover is quite high which speaks volumes. The best thing I can say is the female AP who used to be here was shipped over to Gold Hill. While I have so much empathy for the students and parents who now have to endure her, I can't tell you how happy everyone at FMMS is to be rid of her.

The school seems to operate like our old school, which was okay. I dont really have the credentials to judge how great a school is but from a parent standpoint I would say it seems to be okay.

Heres my likes and dislikes:

I dont like that they have rats running around the school. Some say this is normal when youre located near an open field. I say its a health risk and needs to be addressed so students arent reporting rats being in their classroom on numerous occassions. Multiple reports of rats on different days to me says that nothing was done to eradicate the problem (the rat) the first go around or there is an infestation.

GT students (all students) should receive direction that is clear and easily understood by their age/grade level. I have had to do a lot of tutoring at home with my student in a particular GT class and I think thats partly due to my child not asking questions but also due to the teacher not explaining things well. I think its assumed that GT students will perform well on whatever is put in front of them. I think any student can do well on anything you put in front of them if you explain it to them in a way they can easily comprehend it. Theyre not college students yet. Slow down and give them some extra guidance when needed.

I think the school could use a paint job. The school doesnt look like it would house employees and students that are above average (although, it does). Maybe, the budget can be tweaked a little to allow for an exterior paint job, etc. As a parent and community member I would volunteer to help paint the school, etc.

PTO and other parent organizations have meetings that are not friendly to those who work 9-5.

My first visit at the school and every visit since then has been great! The teachers and staff are very welcoming. The students are well-mannered and just an exceptional group of young people!

The teachers and staff are good at their jobs and seem to really care about the students!

Overall if you don't mind playing favorites, then this is the school for you. The leadership here is based on who your parents know and not actual work ethic.

Overall, I am going to be switching my child to online school. This way they can focus on their work achievements and not politics. If your kid has not played sports before middle school. Don't bother trying to get your kid any playtime here. The coaches play a mean game of favorites and your kid has zero chance of being developed. Try to locate another school district before choosing this one, because it's not just this school it's the entire school district.

If things in life are handed to you. You'll never develop integrity. This school even though it's a newly built school. The concept is a very old and dated way of handling things.

We moved to Fort Mill specifically for the schools and have not been disappointed. Teachers keep the kids engaged and seem to really be happy to be at the school. Our child is thriving and loves FMMS!
