Warning for Parents Considering WGCS

As a parent, I feel compelled to share my experience with WGCS in the hope that it helps others make an informed decision.

From my perspective, the leadership at the school, particularly the owner, Kyle Boyd, demonstrated a style that felt rigid and, at times, difficult to work with. I felt that communication lacked transparency, and it seemed to me that decisions were often made without considering the well-being of the students and their families.

My child entered WGCS as a mild-mannered, enthusiastic student. However, during our time there, I noticed significant changes in his demeanor that concerned me. I also had questions about the academic curriculum. Despite the schools claims of offering an advanced curriculum, in my opinion, it did not meet South Carolinas academic standards. I observed that extra credit was frequently used to raise students grades, which left me concerned about the consistency and rigor of grading practices. Also, I felt as if communications between teachers and parents were lacking or non-existent; especially in Math.

Athletics were another point of concern. While the school promotes its commitment to offering several athletic programs, in my experience, there was no on-site gymnasium, and the off-site facility used did not feel particularly safe or appropriate for school sports (and it is across town). Additionally, I found the handling of my sons attempt to play public school sports troubling. I felt that WGCS staff misrepresented facts in a way that ultimately harmed his opportunity. Thank GOD for AAU sports, which more than prepared him to play next year. What the devil meant for evil, GOD turned it around for his good!

Spiritually and culturally, I had hoped for a community that uplifted and embraced Christian values such as honesty, fairness, and love. Unfortunately, I did not feel that those values were consistently demonstrated here. As a parent of a minority child, I also observed what I perceived as a lack of inclusion, particularly in how students were recognized during school awards. In our time at the school, I did not see any minority student receive certain awards that are meant to reflect strong Christian character.

Its very difficult for me to write this, and I waited until the end of the school year to do so because I did not want my son to face any retaliation. Due to our negative experience, I cannot recommend WGCS until serious meaningful changes are made.

The experience at Walnut Grove Christian School is like no other. The staff is passionate. The students are friendly and respectful. They really seem to like each other. The aesthetic doesn't feel like a school. It's very Christ-centered and prayer-saturated. Can't recommend it highly enough.

As a teacher and a mom of two kids each with their own unique strengths, talents and struggles, I can attest to the frustrations that come with trying to find the perfect school. Our family was drawn to the small class sizes, extracurricular options, and college/career guidance offered in a Christian environment. Both children have made friends, are happy and they are learning from the skilled educators who keep the kids challenged and provide additional support when needed. WGCS is a nurturing community that puts students first and meets social, emotional and academic needs. Truly a blessing!

The teachers at this school truly care about these kids~ it shows in their lesson planning, the help they provide with students having trouble and the one on one connecting throughout the school year between teacher and student to create a safe place to learn.

The teaching of scripture is one indicator. The low tolerance for bullying within the school sets a wonderful standard for life as a growing child and adults alike.

The school works well together. You can clearly see the team work between teachers and administrators and the Principal shows great care for the families that have entrusted them with their children. The principal, teachers and board are honest, direct and have great communication skills.

My nieces and nephew are very well rounded, have respect for each other, themselves and parents/adults. I love helping them with their homework and scripture memorizing. They are delightful kids and even being able to see them in their home environment, it shows how the school has helped ground them in life at home as well as in school.

I would rate our overall experience at WGCS as excellent. Our family has been at the school for 7 years and we could not be happier. No school is perfect. The leadership and staff at WGCS actively work to improve the school experience for families. We are so grateful that we found WGCS and recommended the school wholeheartedly.

Homework is purposeful and meaningful and does not feel like its an obligation of the teacher to assign but for the betterment and greater understanding of the student.

Our children consistently test well above their grade levels in all subjects on national standardized tests. They also demonstrate clear knowledge and understanding of subjects and concepts.

Character, integrity, compassion and respect are not just mission statement buzzwords at WGCS, they are actively developed. My children demonstrate these characteristics from what we teach at home and our values are reinforced by all teachers and staff at the school.

The school simply does not tolerate bullying. Any dust ups are handled quickly and effectively. Families who come to our schools from others consistently tell me that there is a world of difference between WGCS and surrounding area schools.

It is my intent as the writer that this is not the case. Unfortunately, bullying does occur and has to be recognized. In most cases, the person who does the bullying is discreate and will not openly admit to his/her action. Bullying is the use of force, coercion, or threat, to abuse, aggressively dominate or intimidate. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception of an imbalance of physical or social power. This imbalance distinguishes bullying from conflict. Bullying is a subcategory of aggressive behavior characterized by the following three minimum criteria: hostile intent, imbalance of power, and repetition over a period of time. Bullying is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt another individual, physically, mentally, or emotionally. This school has not bullying seminars or speakers who come in. In fact, I believe they feel "none" of their students would ever bully someone.

The overall experience disappoints me. When initially meeting with the "Headmaster" he presented a good sales pitch. Why wouldn't he, he owns it. He will tell you all 4 of his kids go there. I didn't start to question things until at another families house one night and we were talking just about school, the wife mentioned that her husband is a really good judge of character and something doesn't seem right. The more she talked and she is a talker, the more I wondered. They said they were actively looking at other schools. Don't get me wrong, I had already heard things here and there. When someone owns the schools and runs it, where do you go when you need to voice concerns? To get on about the school, there is lack of communication from the school. You will almost never know what your child/children are learning. Communication goes verbally from teachers to students to parents at times, how well does that work. There have been excuses from teachers that they have problems with their e-mail system and they can't figure it out. That is why we don't get notifications. Parents have talked about wanting to start a PTO because of the lack of communication. This hasn't been done in years. Then, we address cleaning the school. It has been talked about that the school has no janitor. I believe 1 time a month a service comes in to clean, that is what another parent said. The girls and boys bathrooms have run out of soap/paper towels. It gets reported and not filled. There have been times when they did have paper towels and the trash was not taken out and the paper towel just get thrown on the bathroom floor. In the middle school bathroom, girls eat their snack in there causing crumbs on the floor. How does nobody who runs the school know this? They have vending machines and kids lose TONS of money with items not dispensing. They have been told, we don't refund money. So, the kids put money in and never get an item but the school collects money on this. HMMM? The school is so small.

I do believe that the teachers are really fair with homework. If you have a smart child they will be board. It appears the curriculum is behind what others are learning. There is no honors program is Middle school. In fact, you can't even get extra work as a challenge. I would make sure you compare curriculums of others schools and even just match public schools just to compare. Education should be every parents top priorty.

I think the teachers are as effective as they can be. I believe their resources are limited. Teachers don't monitor halls when kids are changing classes. This school is so small, why is someone not monitoring what is going on. It isn't hard to have a teacher stand at their door and monitor the changing of classes.

The school develops no character, integrity compassion or respect. They may want to take some credit by having high school kids go on retreats or volunteer. A school can help develop the above when they themselves honor those same qualities.

I believe the owner, who also referred to as the "Headmaster" is in ineffective leader. I believe he runs the school like a house however if you challenge the head of the house, it is not well perceived. It is of my opinion the he is an excellent salesman with getting people interested in the school.

The length of stay for teachers is very short, this effects an established class/material planning. Only a couple have been here many years.

My child left the school behind in most subjects. They have much work and growth needed in curriculum and keeping teachers. Social environment is great, but I didn't want to continue to fall behind in knowledge. They also raised tuition and it just couldn't be justified.

I can't say enough positives about Walnut Grove. My daughter was really struggling at public schools. We had nightly tears and she was just getting lost in the larger classrooms. We made the decision to give Walnut Grove a try and she has absolutely flourished! Within a couple of weeks her focus had improved tremendously and she was telling me how much she loved learning. I quickly realized how much she really needed the smaller classrooms, one on one attention, and the encouragement and accountability teachers are able to provide with smaller classes. It has really been a life changing experience and I am beyond grateful to see how her love of learning and her confidence has soared. She has been so positively impacted by going to a smaller school where the teachers and staff are invested in each and every student and truly want to see each student thrive. It's a very loving and nurturing environment. They do not put up with any bullying either. Great school.
