I had a student at all three sites. The elementary school staff is very friendly. However, they did very little in terms of field trips or extracurricular activities for the students. The Jr high is a JOKE. Parents beware, the turnover is VERY high with the staff (see online for all of the vacancy). Teachers are unhappy with the support offered by administration. They allow students to be suspended over and over and over again (15+ times) without any conversation about removal which not only upsets teachers but also puts student’s at risk. They knowingly allow a PE teacher to DAILY sit with kids in rows for half of the class before providing physical education. It’s a running school joke about how that particular PE teacher runs the class. The junior high principal is basically invisible to students, staff and parents. The Vice principal tries her best to provide support and discipline, but there are too many needs that are not being addressed. The lunch lines are so long that the 20 min lunch period barely gives students enough time to eat lunch and use the bathroom before they go back inside. The high school has great counselors but very little extracurricular for students to get involved in. However, the band is incredible. Also, there is a lot of concern about school safety as a whole. The elementary and main junior high building have two locking doors before you enter the building but they have multiple glass doors all around the building that somebody could get into pretty easily. The high school and the Student Union are wide open for potential safety breaches. Although all classroom doors remain locked most Jr. High and high school classrooms remain propped open during the school day (I spent lots of time on school campus and in all three buildings). Overall, I would be very leery about choosing this charter for your students. If you choose YPA, I would also get involved in the education here and keep your eyes peeled for things like excessive turnover and leadership. Teachers don’t leave schools they leave administration.

Overall experience with this school is very poor.

ELEMENTARY BUILDING
most parents reviewing are in the elementary building, but the entire schooling changes as you transition to the student union and middle school. If you are needing a school for elementary children, this school is the best choice, nice kids in the elementary, they handle problems and concerns better. I strongly encourage you to enroll your elementary students in kindergarten, as this school has a sort of family aspect to it. It offers k-12, and many kids stay year to year in the elementary and everyone knows everyone, theres no sort of popularity contest in the elementary building. There are many nice kids that will always offer to be friends with your child, and theres no main bullying problems in the elementary. Nice and caring teachers, principals, and staff. Had no problems in elementary.

5TH GRADE AND MIDDLE SCHOOL
Very risky to keep your child here past 5th grade, as the 5th grade and middle school staff and teachers go very downhill.
1. Dresscode
very reasonable, except for the fact that only faculty kids dont get dresscoded at all. This school is very sexist when it comes to dresscode, as in skirts, tanktops, shirts, and even pants. Women are not allowed to wear skirts above the knee, not allowed tanktops even in the gym scenario, or shirts that are too tight, or pants that are too tight. The males are allowed to do almost anything, unacceptable. There was a time where almost my ENTIRE childs class got dresscoded, all for the same reason when the males were all wearing the same thing that the women were wearing. Never seen a room with that many kids crying or upset.
2. Teachers
children will find at least one teachers class as a safe space. Overall teachers are not helpful at all.
3. Staff
Staff will do anything that they can to ignore any problems or concerns. The only time that ive seen them react was when a bomb threat was made and they had officers on campus. They do anything to get your kids in trouble and to make the school experience as terrible as schools can get.
4. Bullying
Students get bullied so much. In the transition to middle school kids seem to think that they got so much authority. If your kid speaks up, all requests to help will be ignored. The guidance counselor is so backed up all the time, and doesnt get to kids in time. When your child does something about the bullying they will get in trouble.

this school really disappoints in the middle school.

I have a 5th grader and 1st grader that attend YPA. Enrolling them at this school was one of the best decisions as a parent I have ever made. The elementary teachers have all been wonderful. The principals are amazing. There are things I wished were different, but they are minor compared to the overall experience of the school. My minor issues are there isn’t a true lunch room for the elementary building, the middle school I’ve been told lacks a library, and the 5th grade is classified as middle school and doesn’t offer a designated recess time.

The thing that was ok, was the quality of education my kids received while in attendance. Other than that...it was kind of a wreck. I had more than one child at this school for many years, so I've seen a good bit to pull my experience from. Things were ok in Elementary, and we had some great teachers there. But things went down hill. Middle school was a disappointment. Not necessarily with teachers (although a couple were bad, most were good). The administration was awful. A school just cannot make it with sub-par leadership, and that's putting it nicely. The turnover rate here is pathetic. The teachers aren't paid enough to put up with the majority of parents being whiny and demanding, and then of course the inept administration. That's why they don't stay. And then families don't stay. There's no consistency in anything. Oh yes....and research what bus your child will be on if you dare enroll here and want bus service. The bus driver constantly floored it while leaving the school while the kids were still boarding the bus. And, screamed at them like a drill sargeant. I brought this to an administrators attention, along with many other parents. There have not been any changes in behavior from this driver. I could go on and on. The school also has a tendancy to give titles to people or make up jobs for people that don't seem to have any qualifications. It's a waste of money, and a joke. Older kids can see right through it, and don't take these people seriously. There's lots of sitting around, and plenty of attitude and judgement...not sure how it helps the kids. Gossip and eye rolling in the car drop-off/pick-up line....so sad. Even had an employee (not sure what their made-up title was), tell my kid to "Go Away" in the hall way while the child was in the hallway with permission. My kids have long since left this school.

I could not disagree any more. The school likes to throw this word around, but often labels the wrong kid as the bully. Certain students are allowed to do and say what they want. As long as their parents are volunteering non-stop at the school since they don't have jobs, or their parents are rich, or their parents are higher-up employees....the student is enabled to be rude to other students and do what they please.

The turnover rate for teachers is very high! There is a reason for this! They would be more effective if administration was actually effective to begin with. Great teachers are being overshadowed by the disorganization of higher level administration. In turn, the teachers appear to move on to better opportunities quite often.

Two of my children attended this school for several years. On the elementary side- we had no issues for two years. The principal is very kind, caring, and does a great job. My child's teachers were amazing. (They have since left the school though)

The middle school and high school administration is absolutely lacking structure, and seems to be more concerned with testing scores than the overall wellbeing of students. There are very limited options for sports, and electives offered as well.

The car line situation at the school is a nightmare (especially on the elementary side) and is a serious accident waiting to happen.

The turnover rate for students AND teachers is incredibly high. I would highly recommend that you look into this prior to choosing York Prep as there is good reason for this fact. York Prep is one of the most disorganized schools my children have ever attended. It filters from the top down to the bottom which in turn creates disadvantages for students caught in the middle of the lack of structure. It is very apparent on the middle and high school sides that there are issues. We thought this would be an amazing long term opportunity for our children, but it turned out to be awful in the end.

The elementary school is great. However, class sizes are too large for the teachers to effectively do their job. We are talking 25-28 kids in each class from K5-5th grade. You can tell they try to pack as many kids in each class as they can so the school can get more money. Also, the 5th graders are considered middle schoolers and they don’t get recess. My middle schooler is in Honors classes and does homework from the time he comes home in the afternoon until he goes to bed at night. He has always been a straight A student until this year. It seems that the middle school teachers could care less if the students succeed. In middle school so far, we have not seen any beta club or national honors society to acknowledge academic achievement. There is a lot of improvement that needs to be made in the middle school for sure. I do not have any kids in the high school at this time.

As a parent, I have been very happy with York Prep. I homeschooled all of my kids very effectively, but my youngest wanted to go to school. He was received with no issues and has enjoyed the school, the teachers, and the faculty. I see a low score from a student that was primarily because of the dress code. I am happy for there to be a dress code. Kids in other countries always wear uniforms to school, so here it is not a uniform, just some minimum standards and I don't see a problem with that. We have really benefitted from the help of the guidance counselor in the college and testing process - so nice to have a counselor that can know all of the kids. The principal is passionate and committed to school safety. When I visited the school, it greatly impressed me that the bathrooms, were, in fact, for going to the bathroom, and not for a gang hangout. Even almost 40 years ago when I was at Rock Hill High the bathroom was not a safe place to go. This school has as nice a look as my nephews private school in Charlotte - very impressive. Activities and communication to parents are so well done. This to me is like a private school without tuition, and highly worth any parent's consideration. I believe to be college bound, students in high school need to take the hardest levels of the courses, but that is the case in any public school. My only regret is that we didn't have him attend the school all 4 years of high school.

As a high school senior and honors student I can safely say that this choice for a school is not recommended. It is primarily due to the faculty and staff in YPA. They are more concerned with dress code and the face of the school more than anything. It has been clear to me throughout my experience that it has never been about the kids succeeding and became ever more clear when the guidance counselor required juniors that were practically in college already to take the ACT again and said, and I quote, "It is for the good of the school to have your high test scores so we can continue to have bragging rights about them." Sound like that is good for the children? In terms of the dress code, it is absolutely ridiculous in how they enforce that. It is not only ridiculous, but also sexist in the way they go about this. I have been in one of my classrooms before when a teacher from an entirely different class would come barging in, specifically targeting the girls in the class for "appropriate wear." This was primarily irritating as most of the rules that they have in the dress code haven't been enforced in months. And frankly, some of the teachers believe that the obsession with the dress code is ridiculous too. They just can't speak up because they'd lose their job. By the way, the dress code on the website is completely uncoordinated with the randomly declared rules about what they actually go by, so don't bother reading that if you're looking at it online. Not to mention most of the guys in the school getting away with sagging and wearing sweatpants that apparantly "don't constitute as actual pants" when a girl wears them. Several girls have been forced to have a parent come to the school to provide clothing, require the girls to go home, or suspend them. Furthermore, there are some teachers in this school that will literally scream at students sometimes for the most ridiculous things. They practically disrupt the entire school when they do this because it is a really small school. I have even had a personal experience with an extremely sexist teacher putting down the females in my sister's class. I have never seen so many young girls upset. Ultimately, I cannot fully express my loathing for this school as there is too much to bring to the table. However, I would never recommend this school to anyone as a first choice for your student or child.

The unprofessionalism of this school is unbelievable. The staff is rude and evasive when problems arise. They do not want parent involvement unless you're volunteering to watch the kids so the teachers can have lunch together. This is a charter school so parent involvement is essential. There is an obscene, emphasis on obscene, amount of drama in this school. I do not have personal relationships with any staff or parents and even I know about all of this drama which says a lot. The turnover rate at this school is like nothing I've ever seen. There have been SOME good teachers from my experience, but I would not be surprised if they leave. It happens all the time. The children leave too. Parents are constantly pulling their kids out, and it's often from being unhappy with the school. The staff is rude in the car line, you can hear them gossiping about other staff and parents in the line. The traffic is a nightmare that they can't seem to figure out after years!! The children are often left unsupervised. We've received dramatic emails about what goes on in the school from PTO members. Emails that were sent to everyone not personal emails. You will not have dealings with the principal, or the principal that is there as of now, you will deal with a "site administrator". If you do deal with the principal well be prepared for no answers to your questions. I'm not even sure she has a clue what's going on. They truly do make up rules as they go and don't follow them either. The kids aren't treated equally and neither are the parents. Basically, unless something very drastic happens like a complete staff reboot, look elsewhere for your child's education. They deserve a zero.

My child has been at YPA from the beginning after spending time in a local district school of choice. As with all schools the education they get is dependent on the teacher in the classroom. Teachers at YPA are there because they care about children and want to teach them in the manner they learn. Their dedication to the "whole child" is above par. Most importantly YPA is a safe caring environment where all employees are there for the student and to encourage learning and educating the child. Having a k-12 campus instills a family environment where everyone knows each other and allows continuity from year to year. I highly reccomend YPA for anyone looking for a smaller learning environment with priority placed on academic excellence and high expectations for behavior and character.

We have been at YPA for 4 years. Although the school had growing pains in the beginning, my boys absolutely love the school! It is a safe place where children are challenged and grow to their potential! I love the emphasis on character education and the expectation on students to behave appropriately. I have one student that needs extra help and one that is GT. I have been pleased to see the way the teachers go out of their way to meet the needs of the specific child. I would definitely recommend this school to a friend or family member.

I would not recommend this school to anyone. Very, rude staff. My children have come home crying on more than one occasion. YPA you need to get your act together. Stop making up titles for unqualified individuals. Stop allowing rules to apply to some and allowing others to get away with whatever they choose. Stop allowing teachers and staff to scream at students. Stop being more concerned with dress code and more concerned with Education. Stop changing Administration every year. The turn over rate for staff as well as students at YPA are worse than a fast food chain. Also it would be great if your phones weren't down every other week. My children will not return to this school. I see many lawsuits headed in your direction in the future.

I have two children enrolled YPA. One in the elementary and one in high school. I can say that both of my kids have excelled since coming to YPA 2 years ago. The thing that makes the difference is the parent involvement and the family -like atmosphere. The only real complaint I have is that I believe the middle school and high school students need more freedoms so that they can learn responsibility. The kids can only mature if given the opportunity to do so.

I am very pleased with YPA! Two of my children graduated from one of the top 3 schools in the state of North Carolina. With that said, I have very high standards. I have personally been involved with all of my children's schools at a volunteer level. I currently serve as YPA's PTO Treasurer as well as Room mom. I am at the school everyday and see first hand their operations. The administration is excellent! Their level of compassion for each and every student and parent is overwhelming. YPA has some of the most educated and caring teachers I have come across in the 17 years I have spent in TOP schools. My daughter is above average in all academic areas! I give this school 5 stars!

Having two high school children who tell me all about their classes, friends, teachers, and experiences at YPA and being a very involved parent who sees it first hand for myself since I am welcomed to volunteer weekly, I can certainly recommend YPA to anyone looking for a fresh experience! The classes offered are challenging, engaging, yet exciting. My sons feel cared for by their teachers and the administrators of the High School. The teachers communicate with all of us and have high expectations of their students, but offer the support to help them succeed within the classroom and one-on-one. I love the small classroom sizes too where my sons feel comfortable to participate in discussions and projects. I am so glad that my sons have had the opportunity to experience YPA. Not only in the classroom, but also at the socials, ball court, golf courses, and the other activities that make a school well rounded. 5 stars without hesitation!!

Absolutely love YPA! My son is a kindergartener and the staff is amazing. His teacher is so incredible! If you are looking for a school you can TRUST, DEPEND ON, and know your child is being taught well and loved...this school is for you! As a mom, I was scared to death the 1st day of school but after seeing the amazing people there and knowing & feeling in my heart that my baby is SAFE was SO much of a relief for me. YPA is not just a school, everyone is a family! The teachers stay in contact daily with you. Keep you updated on your child and if you just want to check on your child, email the teacher and they will reply back. That has been one of my favorite things about this school. I hope you decide to go with YPA. You won't be sorry !! :-)

It had a high school vibe at times. I see it mostly from parents who feel that they can pick and choose who will be the teacher their child gets. I do love the open line of contact and that there is no limit on how involved you can be.

My oldest child struggled academically & socially at another school before coming to YPA. She started in 5th grade and is now in 8th. Her grades have improved and she has blossomed socially. My youngest just started kindergarten this year and I am impressed with everything she learns and her teacher updates us frequently. I brag about YPA to all of my friends. My son was struggling when he came to YPA. Since then, he received the support he needed from the teachers. I received the communication and feedback I needed to know how I could help at home. His reading level improved and so did his confidence. At this year's MAPS testing, his scores improved by 53 percentage points!!!

I have 3 children that attend YPA, we've been with YPA since the doors opened years ago. There have been challenges as with any new school but YPA has by far exceeded my expectations. The Elementary teachers are all wonderful. I really appreciate the continuous communication that the teachers provide. Anytime I have an issue or question, I can email my child's teacher and get a response back the same day. I can drop in at anytime to my children's classrooms and I'm always welcomed by the staff and teachers. I love the fact that YPA has so many parent volunteers in the classrooms and throughout the school. YPA is like a big family. I have 4 children, ages 18, 8, 7 and 6. I have experience with several schools in the Rock Hill area and I recommend YPA to everyone!!

We have two boys at the school. Our oldest struggled with reading and math. With lots of hard work and extra tutoring, our son in thriving. Thank you to all the teachers. You can tell they really care!

I have 3 children who attend YPA at the Elementary, Middle, and High school level and am more than impressed with the professionalism of administration, staff, and teachers in each building. My kid's teachers really care about them and demonstrate accomplished teaching. My children love their school, friends, and teachers, and feel part of a positive community at YPA. I know several parents who have tried taking their bad behaviored kids to YPA because of issues they have at other schools expecting YPA to be the "miracle" for their issues--these are the parents who bad mouth YPA and claim YPA is "terrible" in all ways. YPA is not an alternative last resort for kids who can't succeed in a traditional public school, but a school that cares about students. YPA teachers and administration want all students to succeed, but expect a higher caliber of behavior than other schools. My family is impressed with the educational practices at YPA. No school is perfect; however, YPA is a step up in many ways from tradtional public schools in this area. I will support this school based on the teachers, administration, their educational practices, and higher expectations for student behavior.

Extremely disappointed with YPA. My son only went there for one school year period and will never go back. None of my children will. The teachers are horrible and so are the other staff members. The teacher was constantly blaming my son for everything in the world and even suggested we put him on medication!! His pediatrician said that's why he's the doctor, not the teacher, because he knows what's best and medication is not an answer because nothing is wrong with my son! They make up the rules as they go and the rules are constantly changing, never remain the same. The teacher discussed everything involving my son with EVERYONE, not just me and his father like she is suppose to do! They spend donated money on things they already have rather than improving things and getting things they need but do not have. This school is a complete failure but could be amazing if things were to change! DO NOT consider this school for any of your children!! I'm changing back to my son's old public school!!

YPA is a beautiful school with some exceptional teachers. Unfortunately the elementary administration and managing director ruin all potential the school has. They make it up as they go along. The managing director lacks transparency, integrity, and behaves more like an aggressive politician. Children don't seem to be the focus. The rules are subjective and I've been in the fight of my life trying to get my child the services she needs. While many of the teacher's are awesome, some (my daughters kindergarten) were substandard at best. Administration didn't care to receive the mound of information I have proving the teacher has failed my child in many ways. I can't blame the teacher........I blame the admin for allowing this to happen. Overall, it could be a fantastic school........when the board wakes up and hires people with character to run the place.

This school is obsurd,they make up the rules as they go.what this school lacks is proffesional employees,the directors have no idea what it takes to be a leader. The staff are never available when they need to be! If a student has a problem the parent has no say so.there has been many and i say many problems that have been covered up by the administrators,because they know parents of the students.this is not the school that anyone needs to consider, this is not a place you can consider,because the lack of proffesionalism. I feel like a 0 is deserved by the staff at ypa but in orderr to post a review i had to give a 1. With different administration this school may be ok,but until then it will remain a unsafe,unfair,unless you know one of the staff or volunteers.

York Preparatory Academy (YPA) starting in the 2014-2015 school year is a K-12 Public Charter School, approved by the South Carolina Public School District in June 2009.
