I spent three years at Banks Trail Middle school. I'm now heading into highschool. This school has definitely taught me alot even beyond the curriculum. To start on a good note, most teachers I've had have done their best to ensure a positive and active learning enviornment for students. Though, I wasn't taught by every teacher at Banks Trail I can tell you the ones who I had the experience of knowing were certainly great people, especially my 8th grade teachers. They made succeding efforts to build bonds with students and help them feel comfortable in class. My overall education and learning experience was average. I do fine in all classes and most curriculum was easy to follow despite the rush sometimes to keep up with it and finish at the end of the year.
On the other hand, the social and behavioral aspects of Banks Trail are nowhere near as admirable. Misbehaving students who have a past of bad behavior aren't treated like they should. If they get into an altercation with another student they're only pulled out of class by and administrator and come back 30 minutes later with nothing learned. If you fail to help students understand what's wrong with their actions, they'll never learn and only continue to do it. I've seen some of the worst disrespect I ever have just walking through the hallways in Banks Trail that is just tossed around like it's nothing. I understand it's very difficult to control teenagers, let alone hundreds of them, but it's disheartening to hardly even make an effort. I would go into much more detail if there weren't a word count on the reviews.
Branching off from that aspect but staying on the same level, the treatment of Special Education students. I can't count on my fingers to tell you how many times I've witnessed students and staff treating special ed students like they're lesser than. It's extremely unsettiling to hear an adult repeat a command to a child when they're frozen up or don't understand. If you're talking to someone who doesn't speak the same language as you, do you think making no effort to speak in their language will be of any help in your conversation? It's wont. Because that person hasn't learned your language and you haven't learned theirs. You need to make a change if you want your conversation to be productive.
Since I'm almost out on my word limit, I have to conclude my review. But understand, there is a lot more to be said.

Great teachers and challenging but manageable GT curriculum. Little direct communication with parents but generally thats age appropriate. Could offer better support for students around organization and time management. Great clubs! The kids overall have been friendly and when bullying happens my son said that peers dont laugh or encourage it and even stand up against it.

Good school with lower student population than most in fort mill. Supportive teachers, staff, and administrators who really care about students as individuals. Homework is reasonable. Selection of sports and clubs is excellent.

The bullying allowed at this school is horrible. The language and behavior of the kids is ignored by leadership. The teachers are not engaged and rarely respond to parent emails. Pray for your child if they have to attend this school.

2021 review, The administration doesn't make enough effort to promote a happy atmosphere for the children. Some of the teachers try very hard but others take off often. The principal allows it. The 8th graders had no dance nor were they informed by anyone. Sports continue with spectators allowed. but no news on graduation. Hopefully, that happens!! The band program is not good. at all, neither of my kids had a concert all year.

Fort Mill School District has a HORRIBLE problem with bullying and abuse among the kids. They have all these slogans about kids first and that they take a zero tolerance approach, but that does not apply to any of the teachers kids or the "Fort Millian" families (people have never left this town and it shows). Teachers that should no longer be teaching are left in place for far too long and it impacts the kids wanting to learn. Due to the unmanaged growth in the town the class sizes are beyond what the teachers can handle and kids are bullied in class, right in front of the teacher, who does nothing. The overcrowding extends to the busses where kids are sitting 3 to a seat or on the floor and in one instance a student was assaulted on the bus and the kid was only suspended for a short time.
Kids know that nothing happens when incidents are reported and parents have to get involved regularly to attempt to get action. Some teachers and administrators care, but you won't know who that is until you have a situation where you need help. Middle school sucks enough, but without teachers and administrators that are actually willing to do what it takes to make it better, this school and the school district are in a permanent downward spiral.

Terrible. Like other parents I know firsthand, very dissatisfied to the point of considering alternative schools and home school. We expect much better quality in Fort Mill, not just meaningless slogans about kids first.

My son went to one of CMS schools from KG to 5th grade. He has now been attending to BTMS, Fort Mill School for last two years (6th and 7th grade). He gets a lot less homework than he used to get even in the fourth grade, but I Can see he is definitely learning at a lot higher speed than he did in elementary school. Not to mention he is among GT kids and I am very satisfied the adequate amount of HW he gets.

Unlike most middle school, this school doesn't have bullying problem, communication is excellent, and over all programs are designed to educate kids in a learning environment instead of making them work horse.

The communication weve received from both the principal and the teachers has been excellent. The teachers and staff care about the students and have created a great environment for the students.

I have delt with Fort Mill Schools for 10 plus years and they have encouraged (without saying it of course) that my children may benefit from using medications. I have four children and all graduating at different times and this has been suggested with each of them at some point though out there schooling. A lot of the staff have tend to be bias toward the more privileged ($$$$$) children.

One word.....racism!!! No diversity!! The teachers are allowed to scream and shout their political views in front of the students. Do not subject your kids to this kind of adult behavior. So tacky!

This is our second year at this fairly new school. Principal is new this year but seems to be highly motivated. Most teachers seem to be above average, with the usual struggles with teachers using/not using the provided system (eChalk) to communicate. They seem to want to use it, but with the caveat that "we don't always have time". As a parent, that's the only tool we have to stay up with our kids' assignments and responsibilities. School facilities are nice, no issues with gangs, bad behavior, things like that.
