This school inherently has a good curriculum and awesome teachers. However, their system is flawed to the point where students who strive for more won’t be met with those expectations. For example, let’s say your student wants to take many challenging classes and strives to attend a world renowned competitive university. This school won’t provide that level of support and help from the beginning. You could sign up for 3 AP’s, a PLTW, and 3 honors classes, but you will only end up with 1 AP and 2 honors classes simply because they don’t have enough teachers. This obviously won’t cut it for students who want to attend impressive institutions, as they’ll most likely end up in grade-level filler classes which don’t align with their goals. The student to staff ratio mostly plays a role in this inconsistency, as there are way too many students and not enough teachers. Additionally, some of the clubs operate fairly, but a lot of club boards are very cliquey and only accept their close friends while rejecting others even while meeting the same criteria. One of the advisors for a really popular club literally sat with their favorite students while reading and sorting through applications for the club.
Due to these inconsistencies in the system, many seniors don’t end up going to top universities, unfortunately. Most seniors end up at state schools like Clemson and UofSC which aren’t bad schools but they don’t align with most people’s goals. In the past few years, the amount of students who ended up at Ivies or T20s could be counted on your fingers.
If you want your student to attend a good post-secondary school, I’d recommend you splurge on a house in Charlotte and send your kids to one of the public schools there. Charlotte basically has feeder schools and allows your kids to take rigorous classes while participating in spectacular clubs. Even if your kid won’t end up at an Ivy, it is 100% easier to get into UNC or other T20 schools.

This school is unsafe and has a bullying problem that is not being addressed. They are almost pro bully. My child was just assaulted by a student who pulled her hair after my daughter attempted to intervene in a disagreement that student had with a friend. My daughter attempted to de escalate by telling the student to speak to her friend respectfully. In response the student attacked my child. The administrations response was to tell my child first to never verbally advocate for someone being bullied & second to not defend yourself if you are being attacked. They do not care about your child in this situation and will attempt to gaslight you.

We loved this school! We have had two kids go through here and it has been a wonderful launching point for their college careers. One of our children has 504/ IEP needs. They have been met very well. (Yes, we do have to educate the teachers/ team every semester on what works best for our kid, but it is always done in a positive way with very little pushback.) There are a few holdout staff from "back in the day" when the town was small and things were done differently. Luckily, those are getting weeded out. There are amazing opportunities for AP/ Dual credit. The school is on a great trajectory with a wonderful new principal. We will miss it!

From what my daughter told me, this school is great. The P.E. teachers are apparently well known and work with several companies to ensure their students to be successful. Although, when it comes to the students' FREE lunches, they are poorly made, says my daughter. She says that she be happier with packed lunches rather than "the nasty school food." When it comes to teachers, they are very, very nice and always have a personality to share with the students semester-round. My first complaint, other than the school lunches, is the new principal. My main concerns are that this new principal BANNED wearing bracelets and over-sized rings to school. I don't know why. Also, as my daughter states, students used to have 10 minutes in-between classes to use the bathroom, socialize a little bit, and then walk to class. But, this new principal changed it to 5 minutes. It takes 2-3 minutes alone to use the bathroom, let alone walking to class in a huge 2-story high school afterwards. Many students will be late to class everyday, as many of them are already late to class within 10 minutes in-between class time. As for the safety, I would say pretty good. My daughter states that they do fire drills, tornado drills, intruder drills, and many more procedures about once a month or a little more. After all, no hate to this school, just a few complaints.

The teachers at Indian Land high school are great teachers. If I ever have any questions I know I can email them or set up appointments to discuss my concerns. They are very resourceful. The track coach is amazing . He really encourages the kids to do their best. The counselors are improving each day with all the new college information that is out there.

Honesty, integrity and fairness all starts with the principle, then the teachers and on through to the students.

ILH is the perfect size school with 700-some students. We moved here a year ago and my 3 kids are now in their 2nd year. The teachers and administrators are caring and competent. My kids are not in sports and I appreciate that they don't feel left out because of that. Guidance counselor assignments are by last name so all my kids have the same one: Ms Walker. She is the best guidance counselor my kids have ever had.

My daughter transferred to Indian Land from what our former district (a school every says is tops in the State), she had an awful experience there. Came to Indian Land and was warmly welcomed by the staff, teachers. Everyone offered to help and followed through on their offer when she started this year. My daughter likes ILHS because the teachers are inspiring and I have seen her grow as a student under the tutelage of teachers that love their job. She has found the students to be welcoming as well. I'm sure everyone experience is different, but she is my last child (of five) in HS presently. I would have to say this is the best public school we've been in. While not perfect, no school is, they really try hard to use their resources well, engage the parents as well as keep things simple and practical. I had given up that schools like this still existed. For the record, I never take survey and rarely write reviews.

Excellent! the students test scores are very high and the work is easier on students. Indian land is one of the highest rated schools in South Carolina.

Have 2 children that attended for one yr. Parent involvement isn't wanted or welcomed. Helpful suggestions are discouraged. The staff and faculty don't want anything to change. They are being paid well for minimal amount of work/effort and poor results so they definitely don't want anyone to rock the boat. Parents and students not from the IL area are looked upon with disdain. Faculty and admin seem to be tight knit local club of underachievers. Overall the school building and employees seem to be 50 years behind the other schools that we have experienced. My child's teacher referred to his best friend as "colored." The school also has a native American mascot. Felt like we were in a time warp for the year that my kids attended

Posted: September 7, 2014

By far, the WORST high school ever!!!!! BEWARE PARENTS!!!!!There is no parent involvement and the staff is not good. Lots of issues in this school the 2 years my kid attended here.

ILH is a fast-growing school in a fast-growing district. I have found them to be an excellent school for my children. They have all graduated and gone on to be good students of higher education and good citizens. The staff and teachers are caring and responsive to the needs to the parents and work hard to get parents involved in supporting the school through the School Improvement Council and Athletic Boosters. We moved here from the Midwest 12 years and had no idea how it would be moving to the South. We found it to be an easy transition and are very glad we chose to settle in Indian Land

I have a daughter that attends ILHS. I was told by a friend about the low rating on this website. She bought a house in another school district just because of this. ILHS is a great school, the teachers are supportive, and the staff is helpful. My daughter has only attended IL schools and she is very well rounded. All the IL schools should have a 10 rating. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. All schools have areas that need refinement. Several posts said things about racism and lack of tolerance to differences. I don't see that either. When bullying happens, it is addressed quickly. My daughter has reported it and watched first hand how it was handled by the administration. Most of the community is from another area (primarily north) and there are over 65 countries represented in the schools. It seems the complainers are the once that lack tolerance and should inject themselves within the school system to help. Create a solution; don't just be a problem.

All 3 Indian Land schools, Indian Land Elementary, Indian Land Middle and Indian Land High were rated (this week- 4-8-14) with GOLD Standard award for excellence. There is no reason either of these schools should have a rating in here below 10.

We visited IL a few years ago and liked what we saw. Everyone, especially in the office, were extremely welcoming and very friendly. Unfortunately we decided on another school in order to be closer to my job and we have regrets. I have always heard nothing but good comments from everyone I come in contact with regarding IL HS and the community. From the outside and compared to other areas I think you have a great school; every place has its ups and downs

Posted: March 5, 2014

What is going on with this school's rating???? Why is it continually dropping? When I first looked in this area the HS was 10/10 and the middle school didn't have a rating as it was just split from the elementary school.....6/10? What the heck???

I have a freshmen who is in the IL High and has attended Indian Land School since 3rd grade. He is involved in AP course curriculum and very challenged. Most of the teachers and administration are excellent. The only two issues I see are the facilities (a situation where the school district is slow to react to fast growth) and inconsistant athletic programs and facilities. As far as racism goes, my children have never experienced any and have an Arab/Lebanese surname.

My daughter attended this high school as a freshman. Unfortunately, we had to move to Florida the summer before her sophomore year. We miss this school district. My daughter loved this HS. Her GPA was a 5.0. She had great teachers, a great basketball coach. I can't speak for the alleged racism. However, I felt after living in both MI and NV prior to moving to Indian Land, I felt this school was very diverse. Every school district has it's issues. As a parent who's children have attended 4 different schools in 4 different states I feel like there will always be something parents complain about. My daughter is sad she couldn't graduate from IL. I loved this school and the community as well as the supportive teachers who teach there. When this school gets bigger (and it will soon enough) they will be able to offer more competitive athletics as well as more programs that the neighboring SD has.

My son graduated from IL in 2011. We moved here from PA mid junior year. The staff and teachers made the mid year transition easier for him. He was able to continue all of the same AP classes he had been taking in his previous HS. He enjoyed his teachers and made friends quickly. This school was quite a bit smaller then what he was used too. However, with the growth in the elementary this HS won't stay small for long. I guess every parent has a different experience. Our family had a great one. My son graduated with a 3.4 and now attends a 4-year university. I never saw racism or teacher in appropriateness. I had 2 nieces who attended this school as well and they loved it. So I am completely shocked to see some of the accusations. My rating is confident and truthful. I am very excited for my younger boy to attend this school as well.

I was a student at ILHS and graduated in 2011. I moved here in the spring of my Junior year. The counselor did a good job of making sure I could continue with the same classes I had been taking in Pennsylvania. The teachers were great and patient and made sure I was caught up to what they were working on in all my classes. The kids were all cool and I made friends easily. The school was a lot smaller then what I was used to but it was just as good. I really liked my time there. I graduated with a good GPA and now go to a University here in SC.

An objective and honest review for those coming to this area from out of state- Racism dominates this school. Might be a good experience for students from the IL area but my children are of mixed race and encountered so much intolerance and racist assumptions from other students and staff alike. We are an upper class interracial couple and have had to endure so many slights. We purchased a lovely home in a new IL subdivision and had a great experience until summer was over and our children started in high school. There is not much diversity among the students and staff and not many extracurricular activities. Too much emphasis placed on football. No lacrosse program. School admin has attitude of "if you don't like it, then go back where you came from" High school and district are severely lacking for such a growing area.

Posted: January 27, 2014

I agree with the poor reviews and think that school employees must be writing the good reviews. I don't know anyone that is happy with this school. Most of the staff and teachers do gossip and several have "friended" my son on Facebook. He did not accept any of the requests and changed his privacy settings but It seems weird (and made him feel awkward) that faculty members would attempt to pursue a relationship with him beyond the classroom. This was against policy at my son's previous school so this is the first time he had ever experienced this.

Posted: January 27, 2014

Our family is new here as well. My daughter will be headed to private school as soon as the school year ends. The other students are racially insensitive and have harassed my daughter since she started school here. The school admin calls it "teasing" and refuses to act. She has been harassed daily about being a so-called Yankee, living in a nice home, having different hair, having acne, big nose... On and on. This school district does not have a clearly written policy that addresses bullying among students. Most of the policies that address this behavior actually appear to be written to protect teachers and other staff. (Teachers and staff are not required to attend school every day. Students are. Where is the concern for the students safety?)

I seriously think that as parents this is not the forum to use to insult each other. If some parents feel that the school needs help that is why there is PTA and saying in general that all new parents should go back to where they came from to me is an insult. We should be a little civilized and respect other PARENTS and TEACHERS as well. My daugther has a wounderful teacher and I personally feel the school Administraion is also working had to make very parents happy and at the end of the day the idea is to educate our children and we should respect that.

Posted: September 11, 2013

I really hate that my child attends this school. The staff here gossips and is unprofessional. The school is where we came from was ten times better academically. I regret sending my child here and can not wait to sell my home so we can move on.
