Our student has had a unique Hume-Fogg experience coming in as a senior from out of state. To say that the staff and students have welcomed her with wide-open arms would be an understatement. From the first day, she has been embraced by the student body and supported through the transition by every single one of her teachers. They all have spent time authentically getting to know her - both academically and socially. The only downside to this year is that she wishes she had moved sooner and enjoyed 4 years of high school here.
The academic rigor is the exact challenge she was searching for in preparation for college next year!

Our son thrived at this school- the teachers (particularly in 11th and 12th grade) were amazing- inspiring and supportive but still with high standards.

Two of my children attend or attended this school, which has been a fantastic experience for them both! The academics, the teaching, and the high number of AP classes available all combine to make the school a first rate academic experience. The school's downtown location sets it apart from other schools and has also been a positive. Even the fact that the kids learn to take city buses makes them more independent. School activities -- such as mock trial, band, and sports -- are also terrific. We feel lucky to be at Hume-Fogg!

I'm curious about the lack of reviews posted to the Great School page. Hume Fogg High School is one of the oldest high schools in Nashville. and one of the most promoted public schools in the state.
It's odd to only have 4 reviews available.

As a student who transferred in the middle of their senior year, I did not fit in and felt very uncomfortable. Most of the teachers were accommodating and supportive, but there were still a few that did not know how to handle the situation who should have. This is the same reaction you would find at any other school. Due to the unusual nature of my transfer, while I did have a few friends I was mostly labeled the class weirdo. In later years, I was snubbed when trying to reconnect and attended the reunions. Ironically, despite being outcasted at my previous non-magnet high school, I actually found more acceptance and a willingness to reconnect from other students. Hume-Fogg tended to have an intellectual and classist snobbiness.

My experience exceeds expectations in academics, athletics, and preparation for national colleges and universities.

HFA taught me critical thinking skills and the core writing and analytical tools to support later academic and professional work. More importantly, it provided a uniquely diverse high school environment which formed the much more nuanced skill of charitable reading - of texts and of others. Though 100% of our class went off to college (and three to the #1 school in the country), I am most grateful that our teachers helped us practice being good citizens and challenged us to do - and bring - our very best.

Welcome to Hume-Fogg High School- where the pressure to succeed is high and grades define your intelligence. The academic environment is centered on one type of student- the kind of student that is able to learn at a rapid pace but still keeps his or her sanity. I'm not exaggerating one bit; this school provides every student with a rigorous college prep curriculum. I'm a junior at this school, and honestly my time here has been less than ideal. Despite my setbacks, however, I believe that any student can succeed at HFA if he or she is motivated and works hard. The opportunities here are tremendous, and at the end of the day I am grateful to one day be able to call this school my alma mater.
