An academic focussed school that also offers various other opportunities. Our son in grade 6 is thriving here, the staff and teachers are very involved and motivated, there is emphasis on academic rigor. Ample opportunity in sports and extra curricular activities.

Highly recommend this school .

We have had a wonderful experience at SBA. We found the administration to be very intentional and proactive about creating a safe space both emotionally and physically. My son‘s teachers were excellent. Not only did they teach their subjects well, they genuinely care about the students they are teaching. I loved some of the out of classroom opportunities for enrichment, class trips, assembly, Earth Day, Grandparents day, etc… I really feel like the school is good academically and provides a culture of kindness for its students and families. We came during middle school and my son graduates this year and I can honestly say we are sad to leave.

We have a neuro atypical child with ADD and found the school ill equipped to handle a situation where some very small accommodations were needed. As soon as we left the school for a public school, his major issues disappeared and we no longer needed those accommodations. The school is just fine if your child is typical or has mild learning differences but any institution that can not teach all children is not an excellent choice in my books. There are some good teachers in the upper grades but institutional policies like this foster close mindedness, bullying, and worsens self esteem in children.

I have two daughters at SBA and they are both thriving, and they love school. The teachers are passionate and energetic. The principal, Mr. Sabo, is fantastic and is a dynamic leader. The school recently won the Blue Ribbon Award for academic excellence. The school's educational foundation of self-discipline, compassion, responsibility and social justice is a legacy of the Sisters of Mercy who started the school. I do wish there was a little more diversity, but that's the only thing lacking. I couldn't be happier.

Our son is very bright but has diagnosed learning differences. His and our experience at SBA was beyond disappointing; it was disastrous. SBA seems to be a great environment for focused, flexible kids with no learning or social challenges, but if your child falls outside of this description, look elsewhere. We also found the general quality of the instruction and the teacher communication to be inferior to what we have encountered in the better public schools in the area.

SBA is simply not the place for children with learning differences. The staff members who were specifically trained work with kids with learning differences were well-meaning and kind, but the faculty and administration are extraordinarily poorly prepared and educated to work with such children.

Great focus on academics and all around child development.
Mr. Sabo is a great leader with a superb faculty and staff and parents are very involved though the Home School Association (HSA).

This is an outstanding school led by a superb headmaster. We have had three children go through St. Bernard. In general, the faculty is also wonderful. When there are problems teachers, the headmaster works quickly to replace them if necessary. The school is small and this is given our children opportunities for many activities that they might not ordinarily have any larger school. All three have enjoyed playing sports at St. Bernard. Our eldest daughter is now in high school at one of the cities top schools. She was extremely well prepared but St. Bernard. The community is very welcoming and there is no tolerance for bullying.

Abrupt changes seem to be the norm at SBA. With all that said, if you get lucky with the right teachers and your child is flexible, you can get an excellent education. In my experience, the leadership is not forthcoming about why they make certain changes and they do not own up to the difficulties some changes can cause. Luckily, I found the teachers to be more candid and very committed. Not very Catholic. Deployed a secular anti-bullying program called Olweus rather than choosing to incorporate the concept into religion class. I would say the religious influence is a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. My oldest child could not have been more prepared for high school where she did well. My other child eventually moved from SBA because of the chaos we experienced with his class and the revolving door of inexperienced teachers. We would have liked to have had math under one if the senior math teachers, but there was just too much junk going on to try and make it work.
