Dont let your student go here if they are LGBTQ+, if you need support or testing for disabilities or suspected disabilities, non-white, or if you are anything besides the Christian religion. The staff are very unhelpful every time my student needs help with her schedule or anything and they act like Im bothering them when I follow up to try to get her the help she is seeking. They will also force you to drive hours away to make your student do STAAR testing in a church, even if your student is not comfortable going to a church for their testing. They dont advertise their conversion efforts because they dont want you to know that they are going to be pushing their religion on your kids instead of educating them properly with evidence based information as they should be. They have Bible classes as social studies curriculum (no other religions offered, only that one) as if the million churches out here on every street corner arent enough. Separation of church and state are gone guys.

With multiple sports schedules this school has been phenomenal for flexibility!! Including AP and Dual Credit along with increasing credits per year - the advanced options have been awesome! If your child is independent- the online daily assignments schedule- semester calendar doesnt require parent involvement! The teachers meet with the student as often as requested and the online tools are fabulous for tracking progress. I hope we see positive college acceptances.

I tried signing my son up for this virtual school and it took a very long time hearing something back from anyone. People would take days to respond to emails and werent very detailed in their responses which left us confused most of the time. Im actually glad this didnt end up being the school my son enrolled in. More help is needed or proper etiquette should be advised.

Our learning couch is useless. Lots of messages about attendance but zero guidance. Sometimes my kids do work and it still counts them absent. Emailing about issues with work over and over. The email they provide for help for my students absences doesnt even work. This school is a joke! I wish I hadnt enrolled them! Zero social things going on either.

This was a great school for my son and I was very heart broken we had to make the decision to leave. Our success coach was amazing and was always in contact to make sure my son was striving. He strives in all his classes but one. He tried so hard in that one class and did the best he could, but that one teacher made him feel very small. He was scared to contact her because she made him feel very small. She was a very knowledgeable teacher and knew her stuff, but we just didnt feel like we would ever make it out of that class. All the other teachers were awesome too. I would still highly recommend this school, but it wasnt for us. Like I said, it broke our hearts that we had to make a decision and leave. My son has just decided to do night classes and her a GED

My son has learning disabilities and he is doing well at this school. This is his second year at the school. Because of my sons learning disabilities I have to be available when he needs help understanding. Most of his teachers provide enough instruction during class so he can understand what is taught. Sometimes he has to go over the class content to get a better understanding.

Posted: October 5, 2020
Some teachers dont clarify what class work has to be completed outside of class.
Posted: October 5, 2020
The teachers reach out to parents when necessary. They are available fir students during office hours. They also do their best to answer questions during class without impacting class instruction.
Posted: October 5, 2020
Teachers remind students to be respectful and appropriate during class. They will monitor chat yo make sure students are being respectful.

Posted: July 9, 2020
They do nothing for 504 students, so where is the leadership. They make you feel as if their above you.
Posted: July 9, 2020
They do not help students learn, where is the classrooms, their classroom connects are less than 30 minutes and not everyday. Teacher calls on her favorites.

Teachers bullied my daughter where she almost hurt herself

Posted: March 27, 2020
There is not enough interaction between the student and teacher.
Posted: March 27, 2020
Poor poor education. This should be a last resort.
Posted: March 27, 2020
They refuse to provide more challenging material for my daughter.
Posted: March 27, 2020
Most call in sick or cancel classes regularly. The teachers cannot maintain a schedule of attendance themselves. My daughter regularly tells me class (which is only 2 hours a day) often gets canceled
Posted: March 27, 2020
Unaccountable. Negligent. 2 hours of instruction time per day. Not sure how the heck they can call this attendance. Sent books and materials they dont use.
Posted: March 27, 2020
There is absolutely no homework and boxes of books were sent which my daughter asked in the 1st week of school when they were going to use them. Teachers told her they will not be using textbooks. They go through the motions like they are a legit entity. they are not and the school report card reflects this.
Posted: September 21, 2019
The teachers are just teaching content. The real job of effective learning (making sure assignments are getting done, getting done correctly and comprehension is there) is the job of the parent at home with the student.
Posted: September 21, 2019
This is the parents job not an online virtual academy.
Posted: September 21, 2019
TVAH has NHS and some other clubs were students can stand out as a leader. Just as with any school, you have to get involved.
Posted: September 21, 2019
You, as the parent must communicate this to the school!
Posted: September 21, 2019
It's hard to bully in an online classroom, but I have seen teachers shut down inappropriate behavior.
Posted: September 21, 2019
All school work is done at home. This is an online school.
Posted: September 21, 2019
Overall this has been a wonderful experience for my kids. I have seen some not so great reviews for TVAH. This is our 2nd year at TVAH but our 11th year with a K12 virtual academy (2nd grade-senior year). YOU, the parent, has to be present. This is not a hands off approach to education. You can't leave your child alone while you go to work and expect them to get things done. You have to be involved. You are the facilitator. You have to be organized and firm when it comes the schedule, assignments and course work or it will not get done!

This works for our family for our 16 year old child. It allows me as his parent to be an active participant and know exactly what he is doing to help keep him on track. He is an intelligent child, but organization and remembering to turn his work in a traditional school setting was a huge challenge. I love how I can see exactly what he is doing and he now asks for help much more often when he needs it. He also struggles to get going in the morning and this allows him to work on a daily schedule that works for him. This is exactly what we needed for our son.

Reactive not proactive. My daughter test scores at this school fall below the state average. This strongly suggests that my daughter at this school is not be performing at grade level. I question if she will even have a chance to be college ready. Need I say more?
Posted: February 12, 2018
I am fully engaged with my daughter education. However she is still unable to write cursive which still has not been address by the teachers. Also my daughter does not fully comprehend a lot of simple words due to being brought from another country (Asian) and thrown in to American school.

Posted: February 12, 2018
Just because my daughter did not receive her meningitis shot she was unenrolled by Texas Virtual Academy. There was no proof that anyone was harmed by my daughter. They also made it accusation of parenting skills that I would endanger others if my daughter was sick. So strong character is not promoted at all.
Posted: February 12, 2018
Either you do what they tell you or they kick you out with no due process. No if's, ands, or buts. You will not question their authority. I have tired to contact the Principal with no luck.
Posted: February 12, 2018
They are not proactive. They are more reactive then anything, so to address your child issues will be your responsibility not there's.
Posted: May 22, 2017
This has been a rough year as far as teacher. I have had a difficult time communicating with some of the teachers. They are either not getting the emails or are no able to return them. One teacher, though has been wonderful with her communication.
Posted: May 22, 2017
Being that this is a virtual school, it is up to the parents to develop the strong character in their children, not the school.
Posted: May 22, 2017
The leadership doesn't seem strong at this point. This may be due to having a new principal and her making changes for the better.
Posted: May 22, 2017
The school seems to have a VERY high concentration of special needs students. I totally understand this as brick and mortar schools are just not prepared to instruct the large population of special needs students. It truly is the parents responsibility to be the advocate for their children and make sure each child gets what is needed.
Posted: May 22, 2017
It is rather easy to not see bullying. This school is virtual and therefore the students can simply close the chat window in the classroom and not see what is being said. The teachers could do a better job of calling out those who do make bullying type comments, though.
Posted: May 22, 2017
The school functions of the idea that all work is done during the "class" time. The students go over the material and then take an assessment to assure they have mastered the concept. No "homework" is really assigned.
Posted: May 22, 2017
We have been in the school for 3 years now. It has worked wonderful for us. My child's grades are high and she has learned so much. I will say, however that I have been fully engaged with her learning. I have not left it totally up to the school to be the primary instructor. I have filled that roll myself. My child has scored higher than the state average each year on the STAAR. I take that as a great deal as she is not under my control and has to do it on her own under the supervision of the teachers there. I will say that if you are a working parent, this school just will not work for you unless you are totally dedicated to being fully engaged in your child's education after your own work hours.

This is our first experience with an online school and man I cant tell you how disappointed we are.
I really don't think its the lack of teachers trying to do their job but the lack and skill set of the management. I have sent out serval emails to principal with no reply. The TXVA upper management is taking teachers out of there assigned duties and having them fill in for other schools. I have 2 children enrolled, one in middle and the other in high school. My high school student is able to keep up and keep her grades up but its been a real struggle. My Middle school student is having nothing but issues. The most recent one is, that her grades\assignments were not showing so apparently she was missing a lot of assignments but we were not able to see them missing. They had to reset her account then we were able to see them. This is just a small sample of all the issues we have experienced with this school. I really like the concept but it still has a way to go, will not be going back next year....

Enrolled my daughter for one semester because we where in the process of relocating, what a mistake, from teachers not showing up, to teachers being replaced, to sessions lasting 15-30 minutes when scheduled for an hour, to teachers claiming that the work was never uploaded. My daughter went from an A-B student, to Failing 5 classes. Don't enroll! On top of that it's nearly impossible to get any answers or customer service.

Lots of busy work, but no actual learning. The clubs are a joke. You aren't allowed to communicate with the other students and ClassConnects are a waste of time. The teachers are unresponsive and the principal is worse. Worst schooling experience I've ever had. -High School Student

The Texas virtual academy program has been a wonderful program and education for my son. This is his 3rd year, as he is now in high school.
It is intended for students who can independently stay on track. A student who has the discipline to attend class connect sessions, and stay in communication with their teachers.
My son went from being on a IEP , to now being completely released from any special ed program, to now on the A B honor roll.
The vast majority of his teachers are very involved, caring, knowledgeable teachers.
As a parent know what this process and education involves, maybe it's not for your child.
But for mine, it's been a wonderful blessing.

Our daughter has been homeschooled following the K12 curriculum for 4 years in conjunction with several charter schools in California and Hawaii. TXVA is by far the worst experience we've had with this program. From the extremely long, difficult (borderline ridiculous) enrollment process (I never had to enroll my daughter in public school before opting to homeschool her, as I had to do in Texas, or draft a letter stating that she is under no disciplinary action), to TXVA "locking" my daughter's curriculum and sending her to "remedial" classes when she took a test more than 3 times to improve her grade, even when she mastered the subject the first time, TXVA is a complete mess. The daily schedule was crowded beyond words with numerous Class Connect Sessions, which are a waste of time, additional "busy work", filling of forms, weekly work samples in some convoluted format, and miscellaneous "red tape"/"administrative"/"standard testing" work. There was no room for learning. After a couple of stressful days, and realizing that TXVA would be a very onerous school to deal with and would take away the joy of learning and flexibility afforded by homeschooling, we withdrew my daughter from TXVA. What a relief!! We are now homeschooling independently, using Khan Academy, K12 materials and Study Island. Our daughter is almost done with the Algebra I curriculum and enjoying every day of school! At the end of the school year, our daughter will take the Stanford Online Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, which are a much better indicator for school success and broadly accepted nationwide, v. the "STARR" tests that TXVA pushes into oblivion. Don't enroll!!
Posted: November 10, 2015
Each day is packed with at least 4 Class Connect Sessions, which are a waste of time for students who (like my daughter) are advanced and know the subject. They are all mandatory, even if they don't contribute in any way to the student's learning. There is also a ridiculous amount of quizzes and paper shuffling (from printing, work samples, etc). Learning comes last, as long as all the "administrative/red tape" requirements are met. Stay away from this school!
Posted: November 10, 2015
The teachers are more concerned about fulfilling "administrative" / standardized testing requisites than in advancing our children's education. TXVA is the right school if you want your child to be discouraged about learning and schooling.

As someone who currently struggles with the amount of work given and a lack of responsive teachers, I can clearly advise anyone considering this for their child to GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Save your self/kids the stress and unneeded work; choose a private home school.
Posted: October 5, 2015
With the mandatory "class sessions" that require you to download a file every day to connect to the class, an unbelievable amount of printing and scanning daily, and atleast 3 of my own personal classes giving me upwards of 7 (yes, seven) quizzes a day, I can very clearly state that yes, despite being advertised as a more approachable/organized "public school", it has too much work and causes myself, and other students to stress constantly.
Posted: October 5, 2015
If there were truly integrity and fairness being shown to students, I wouldn't need to call 'customer support' every time I had a question for a teacher.
Posted: September 28, 2015
Teachers are overwhelmed and don't respond in a timely fashion. They waste too much time in connect sessions.
Posted: September 28, 2015
K12 curriculum is perfectly sufficient but TXVA doesn't agree so they force student to attend their connect session which are waste of time for the most part. Khan Academy and other online service provide a much better value. TXVA also require student to use Google form to fill out weekly questions even if they've completely mastered their Unit Reviews.

Posted: September 28, 2015
I'm very disappointed with TXVA for the following reasons:
- Very unorganized. Admins & teachers send way too many kmails with many typos & mistakes and then they send more email to apologize and correct the info.
- overall slow in getting back to us
- The reality of what is required and how they teach K12 curriculum is very different from how they market it. K12 has a great program but TXVA thing they are smarter so they've reorganized the calendar making you jump all over the place.
- TXVA has a crazy system of using Google forms to ask questions and they don't know how to post them in a way we can keep track.
- Math teacher takes a long time to explain a math program that Khan Academy can explain it in a few minutes in a much easier way.
- TXVA staff are always overwhelmed with technology and the # of students. It sounds like they haven't hired enough admins/staff to save $$$
Overall, K12 is a good choice but TXVA is horrible.

A wonderful experience. Texas Virtual Academy sent me free computers, speakers, printers, and microphones, so I could effectively use the distance learning platform. The curriculum is high-quality, with courses designed by the leader in online education, K12. The teachers are great and communication is instantaneous with the use of IMs. And, with the distance platform, it is possible to minimize interaction with the very rare bad teacher. Coursework can be completed at any time, including weekends and over holidays. This allows "blocking," or completing many lessons in a single course instead of doing many at the same time. The deadlines are not as binding as normal schools, and assignments can be completed up to four weeks after the stated deadline with no loss of credit.
It's a different kind of learning, however, and it isn't for everyone. Students that aren't used to being self-learners will suffer a major culture shock, as there is no physical building that prevents a student from shirking class. It takes a great deal of dedication to succeed in the very free and limitless environment of online education. Want to take a few hours and watch Netflix? Without a parent at home, it's frighteningly easy to get behind on coursework. Parents should be certain that their children can handle the sudden increase in freedom, or a stay-at-home parent needs to be on hand during school days. There is also minimal social interaction with other students, so social-minded students will inevitably be unhappy without an extracurricular source of interaction.
TXVA is a revolutionary school that can be an absolute blessing for those who are prepared to handle the radically different environment. It's a great option for any self-motivated student with a love of learning.

Excellent opportunities to show off their skills and work. Many opportunities to work together virtually without the confines of age/sex/race discrimination=a virtually no bullying environment.

MOST IMPORTANT: YOU MUST BE INVOLVED WITH YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION!!! Our son is truly allowed to go at his own pace and now is placed in two, separate grades. The teachers and administrators go out of their way to ensure that he is supported in all areas. We have been users of the K12 schools since our son was in Kindergarten. He is an extremely well-educated young man at age 13, still loves school and learning, and impresses us all the time with his wide vocabulary, love and appreciation of the fine arts, and exemplary knowledge of math and science (both of which he is in a higher grade level). He does not discriminate against others including AGE discrimination. He'll play with anyone and have fun. The experience of being totally involved with our son's learning path has been a joy and we continue to enjoy it AND continue to keep learning ourselves because of the K12 curriculum. Take the leap!

My child suffered from severe migraines and the schools could not find a proper placement for him. TXVA was a God send for us. He Loves his teachers, the curriculum, while intense, is simple to follow, and I am able to have some flexibility to deal with his medical condition. I cannot say enough good about this school. I love being his learning coach, and am better able to understand what his strengths and weaknesses are educationally than I could in the brick and mortar school. I think it is not for everyone, but for the motivated parent and child, it is ideal.

Our son and daughter logged on and completed/passed all the work/assessments on their daily assignment list each day. Many times, the next day, the same assignments would appear... the ones they had just completed and passed the previous day, so they had to redo them. There were so many computer glitches and issues that I pulled both of them after about a month. The school gave each child failing grades, regardless of the fact that they passed each days assessments. Apparently, the grades are based on percentages completed, and the computer wasn't assigning the correct amount of assignments each day (or making them repeat assignments). This was all acknowledged by the teachers. I spoke with higher ups and they are, so far, unwilling to change the horrific grades even though it was their system that messed up. Very unacceptable!! Sounds like a lawsuit to me.

Very difficult to navigate their online system and impossible to contact technical support. Teachers just reference any problems back to technical support, with no ownership or interest in helping to solve problems.

The curriculum itself is fine, but when it is piled on by class connects, work samples, extra testing, and study island my daughter was spending upwards of 12 hours a day on school. She became incredibly depressed, agitated, and eventually she shut down completely. The home room teacher told her to concentrate on ols lessons first and worry about the rest afterwards, then the next week she would send my daughter an email demanding to know why she'd not completed the extra work and tell her to concentrate on that. It flip-flopped for over a month before I finally had enough and told my daughter to work ahead in some subjects to complete them early and free up some time to concentrate on the subjects she had a harder time with. I got the idea because that is how my college courses are set up. Needless to say, she excelled and finished 3 subjects almost completely. Then her teacher called and accused her of cheating saying that she had done too much work. She told my daughter she had until the end of that day to provide written proof of all of the work she had completed. That is the point where I decided to pull her out because I'm tired of the teacher bullying my daughter.

I just started this school this year and I was not prepared for what was coming to me. And as soon as I went to this school and looked at the classes I knew I wouldn't like it here. There is too much to catch up with and dealing with depression does not help because I constantly feel unmotivated and there's no one to help kick in that motivation no counselors or teachers to help boost you up , I've actually felt more depressed going here than going to Public school. This is far more the baddest school I've been to since Dobie middle school. And the work is hard to do.

Our experience with this school has been disappointing on many levels. The materials are not organized an an intuitive way and we ran into many technical issues with our PC operating system (which was brand new). We ended up having to purchase a Macbook to get all the website features to work properly. The system does not seem to be very forgiving from a technical standpoint. Secondly, our representative provided us erroneous information about when my daughter needed to return to Texas from California to take the STARR test. I wasted $900 on airfare as a result. They never offered to reimburse me for their error. What made us decide to eventually leave TVA was their unwillingness to help my daughter take the STAAR test remotely. TVA continued to tell us that the TEA does not allow this, despite clear evidence to the contrary. I provided them information documenting how TTUISD has been doing this. I also gave them a name of a person at TEA who I spoke with that told me any virtual school can do this is they follow TEA guidelines (which were very easy). They evidently thought it was too much trouble and were unwilling to go the extra mile for my daughter.

For those who are saying the 5 Star ratings are fake, I assure you they are not. We started K-12 4 years ago. My daughter has Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Ehlors Danlos Syndrome, a heart defect, and was being bullied constantly. She had been harassed, verbally and mentally abused, and the staff and teachers did nothing to help. She had to be put in therapy and after they observed what was happening, they recommended the K-12 program to us.It seemed overwhelming at first. I was scared to death but to my surprise, the staff and teachers were right there every step of the way. She was able to work at her own pace and gets extra help in classes she needs it in and advances in those she doesn't. I can not tell you how amazed I am at the difference the k-12 program has made in my child. My once bullied, sad, struggling daughter is now a member of the NJHS, president of her Girl Scout troop, President and Founder of the Sweet and Sour Lemonade Club (benefiting Alex's Lemonade Stand foundation), a past committee member for our local Relay For Life, and is trying to become a mentor to new students at TXVA. I highly recommend TXVA.

2 yrs experience 9th - 11th grd 1) Some highly experienced teachers. They can only tell if kid is engaged if the kid is communicating with them via email, instant message, phone, etc. Will bend over backward if the communication is there but kid is struggling. Will not if they see no evidence of communication. 2) My kid is ADHD so the workload has been extremely tough on him. He works 7 days/wk. 1st year had to be on top of him, used software controls on his computer to prevent distraction. Getting better as he matures. 3) Insanely bad Learning Management System software. Seven concurrent subjects where the teachers trying to help the kids by giving them detailed weekly learning plans but style of each document plan are different and needs consolidating. 4) The learning material quality is very high indeed. I always know exactly what he is learning and know what he is weak in and what he is strong in. Problem is the number of subjects is limited. For example no AP classes in Studio Art. 5) Social interaction is taking a hit. No working in teams, discussion boards are not a good substitute for face to face. overall okay but need to supplement with outside social.

I trusted my child's education with this and am very disappointed. After juggling 8 classes, assignments overlapping, teachers constantly emailing and requesting assignments at the same time was crazy. Math teacher was very rude when reached out for help. If you are doing assignments for one class how can you read emails and attend live sessions at the same time. My child spent more than 10 hours a day on lessons and project. Now because of math cannot attend graduation ceremony. If a large number of students are failing math then there is a problem with the program and teacher. I wish we had continued with public school because this was a poor choice. Face to face contact is better. I hate I trusted this program with my child's education. A very frustrated parent.

Well my child is in TXVA, I will start by saying it's not for everyone!! The work is not simple! It may take you lots of time to get the hang of things and learn how to communicate and be successful! Communication is the key word!! Once you figure it out and learn the ropes it sure makes things a lot easier and well worth it in the end. I say that the 6 hours a day may be for some but I'm sure it's not for most!! I know my daughter may at times put 8,10,12 hours a day depending on what is needed for her to get things done and do well!! So you have to be welling to do what it takes to stay on track and parents have to stay involved and support them! It is a great opportunity for many that can manage the independence and work load. This is not an easy way out, you will put in many long hours of schools the same as regular school in most cases many more. I have to say the teachers are great and the program and school support has been a good! We are grateful for TXVA! Looking forward to the rest of high school with TXVA

The 5 star reviews for TXVA have got to be fake. This school was very difficult to keep up with and keep on task. It takes a tremendous amount of organization on the parent's part, especially for the high school years and a tremendous amount of time on the part of the student. Since it is a public school, it is still required to follow all of the regulations by the state of Texas for public school which includes the 6 hour mandatory attendance rules daily. In such it piles on busy work for the student to take up the full 6 hours and then some (as they expect "homework time" of an additional 2 hours on the student's part.) This is actually a flaw in this system because the 6 hours per day time at school includes time for lunch and breaks between class periods. For TXVA you are required to log the full 6 hours. Many of the subjects, especially Algebra and Chemistry are extremely difficult to convey over the material they present. It just isn't enough. They expect the child to read a few pages and then take a quiz on the subject they just read without giving them the ability to look back on the information. This is not a good teaching method.

My daughters, my nephews and my niece are enrolled in this school and have found it great. The teachers make it a point to call each student and work to meet each students individual needs. I have seen my girls grow and blossom even though it is virtual. They have enough interaction and are free if social pressures to study and grow.

We chose TXVA because my son was being excessively bullied, to the point of physical injury and the school did nothing. Since coming to TXVA my son has grown and learned so much.

We've had issues with study island not recording the work the kids do. After they have completed and attempting entering it 5 or more times, it's hard to talk them in to trying "just one more time". I don't feel like the customer service is all that great. Teachers don't respond to emails in a timely manner. When you want to take issues up a step, seems nobody wants to provide you with contact information to do so. I just want my kid to finish the year and be done. I do think that this is a great program for folks that have the time; we just don't. I would think that a parent communication page for parents to correspond and swap success stories, tips, etc. would be a great tool to have, as well. My kiddos have always excelled in TAKS, so that isn't an issue with us.

I love IQ! This is my son's 2nd year and my daughter's 1st year, and I have no complaints. They have all the tools they need to be successful, and it is a very flexible alternative to "regular" school, but without the huge responsibility of homeschooling. My kids both passed the TAKS tests with flying colors, so I know they're getting a quality education as well.

So far, it's been a month since I contacted the school, and my daughter is still not enrolled. Excuses ranged from, "we left you phone messages," (no missed calls or voice mails on my phone) to "our email must have ended up in your SPAM (nope, I checked). Now they are blaming the weather. I would not recommend IA Academy to anyone.
