We were lucky enough to transfer into Hexter after a not so great experience at our neighborhood school. Over the past few years, we've seen the school grow and evolve into a true community for its students and families. No school year is ever perfect but in our experience the administration and teachers always seem to work very hard to be transparent, fair, and go above and beyond to make the most of what they have to help every student. It's a tough time to be in public education when the state government is doing everything they can to defund and control our local schools.
It's interesting how OLH often seems to take for granted what an excellent school they have right there in their neighborhood. Local parents and neighbors always seem to be the first to complain and the last to roll their sleeves up and pitch in but I guess that's why Hexter is so great because of the transfer families that are grateful and want to do their part to contribute even though we may not be as rich as OLH.

Our first year at Hexter felt like a bait and switch. We had a lot of issues with the new principal's receptiveness and generally found many of the families to be kind of...social climby and rude and their kids seem to act the same way, not really how I want my child to learn to act. Everyone echoes "parental involvement is amazeballs at Hexter!" but it is almost a competitive sport leaving little room for actual participation, for example, lunch signups go FAST and there's a baseline expectation to put in tons of volunteer work with people whose entire adult social life revolved around their childrens school with the principal at the center of it as the queen bee. And for what? The test scores are average and only slightly better than other DISD schools because the demographics. I am sure the new campus will be beautiful and I think we got unlucky that this was our first year during the building chaos but I'm not sure we will stick around to hope for it to be worth it.

Our experience at Hexter was fine, nothing like the reputation it has which I've learned is just a yuppie PR machine to boost home values and keep OLH families in public school. You get what you pay for with public school and the parents are carrying a lot of the load to make the school "good." There's waitlists for after school clubs so it feels like we can't even have nice things without it being descended on by the entitled overly competitive families.

Not wild about this school at all. We transferred back to our home school (Hexter) not impressed with the environment. I can’t explain it but it feels low budget and meh. Really wanted to like this school since it is right by our house but not impressed. We are looking for other options.

Living in OLH for 10 years across from Hexter Elementary, we watched as neighbors how active the school community was, which fits perfectly with the vibe of our neighborhood.

Our daughter began Kindergarten in August of 2020, and we have been very pleased with our holistic experience at Hexter Elementary as parents. The Hexter community is vibrant, the teachers are engaged, and the campus leadership, with Principal Smith leading the way, is phenomenal. The various programs before, during and after school have been fantastic and have provided the right learning opportunities for our student!

Hexter historically continues to have a thriving Parent Teacher Association, raising funds to support a variety of opportunities for our diverse student population and families.

We highly recommend Hexter Elementary School!

My daughter attended this school for 4th and 5th grade after attending a Montessori school since Pre-K. I knew she was bright but because Montessori is "based on the child's readiness" she would often finger knit caps, make great paintings, but had no idea how to really read. That quickly changed once she attended Hexter. We were always told that it can be hard for kids to transition to a "public school" setting because they will be slightly behind but they should be able to make up ground quickly, and trust me she exceeded our expectations. The teachers were very supportive and she was also diagnosed with a mild case of dyslexia and went through the 504 program. She loved her time at Hexter and wished that they went through 8th grade but unfortunately, 5th is their last class.
I also loved the fact that the school is very diverse. This is the real world and she has friends from all different walks of life and I think it makes her a more well rounded individual. I would not hesitate to send my child to Hexter if given the opportunity.

This was my daughter's first school which was a total disaster. The first thing she learned was to be quiet and don't ask questions because "little kids voices are annoying" as she told us about her teacher. She quickly changed from a happy go lucky girl, filled with excitement for school to literally pacing around the room in fear for going back. We never really understood what happened there because according to the teacher nothing was wrong, despite her getting injured at school with no notice to us and regularly coming home telling us she cried at school. We asked for help to understand and we were just flat ignored, this by a supposedly experienced teacher as well as leadership. This year we went to a new school, this year she immediately changed back to her self and loves school again, but it took time because she was hurt during such a vulnerable age. She learned this year teachers can be trusted only because her current teacher is superb. I can't speak for the school as a whole, but our experience at Hexter was toxic.

The staff of this school it's overall really unfriendly, the "techniques" that they use to discipline little children are abusive and disrespectful at least in Pre-K. They can destroy the confidence of a little child in just a few days. Please think twice and don't let you fool for the "years of experience" that some teachers have; sometimes the younger the teacher the better treat the kids "years of experience" often came with old education/discipline techniques and lack of empathy. Please ask your child every day if the teacher yells at them or make them feel scared you'll be surprised.

Our kids have had great experiences at Hexter. Communication is excellent (much better than at previous schools), discipline is well-thought out and really focused on student social and emotional development, and the PTA programs and special events really help the families to bond. We have also
noticed that teachers and administrators have been responsive to special needs and learning differences. The school is diverse and welcoming and the academics are good without putting undue pressure on the kids. The TAG program is also wonderful. Our children are excited for school each morning!

Hexter Elementary is a phenomenal school. My son went from a struggling student to entering the Talented and Gifted program by the time he left. Hexter offered after school tutoring and Saturday School to get him caught up and now his Reading and Math performance are far above grade level. This allowed us to get him into a magnet program for middle school. The teachers have always responded to every concern in a timely manner and my children look forward to going to school every day. They even have a mindfulness teacher that sees the children once a week to work on their social and emotional development. I am so thankful that my children are able to experience Hexter. Is is a very special little school.

10/10. Teachers go way way above and beyond to great lengths to make certain all students are successful!

Posted: June 14, 2018

bullying bad language is at its worst.

Posted: June 14, 2018

I dont want to get instructions for my students homework on an app an then be told I cannot help him with his homework. The teachers should take more time to develop the educational structure if they do not want the parents to help with the homework.

Posted: June 14, 2018

Some teachers are willing to go the extra mile the others are just plain lazy and discriminative against the children with learning disabilities.

Posted: June 14, 2018

school does nothing for supporting confidence, respect and different methods of learning

Posted: June 14, 2018

They do nothing about the constant bullying and bad language

Posted: June 14, 2018

the counselor and teachers just wont help with the advocacy for supporting the students. they only show up to the 504 meetings because it is a state requirement they are not invested. In fact our teacher texted on her phone during the entire meeting. I think it was facebook replys.

Posted: June 14, 2018

5 and that is generous. dont let the other ratings fool you unless your child is a student that doesnt need any help from the teachers and is naturally bright go to another school or hire an advocate

Posted: May 8, 2017

From what I understand the counselor does not do classroom guidance. That should be a large part of her duties as the school counselor.

My son started at Hexter 3 years ago in Pre-K. We absolutely love this school. The teachers are terrific, caring and responsive. I cannot think of a better atmosphere for my son. Hexter is a good school with parent support, the effective PTA in a great neighborhood.

I have a son in 2nd grade and have had the most outstanding experience at Hexter. The teachers and support staff are phenomenal and truly go above and beyond for our children. My son literally runs into school each morning and loves the school and his teachers. The parent community is also outstanding. Hexter is a true community school and one which I feel honored to be part of.

Last year was GREAT... this year 2015-2016... I CANNOT get my child out fast enough. Although we HAD/HAVE some GREAT teachers... they are slowly declining. We have a great Asst principal, but no one seems to care about whats really going on. This school is slowly going down hill... Thank Goodness we will have moved by the next year for a new school.

Posted: June 5, 2015

This school allows kids to be bullied. In fact, teachers are part of the problem. Don't let the stars and 9 out of 10 fool you! Principal doesn't come out of her office. Scores have been lower every year. The culture of "dallas" isd runs through this school screaming incompetent. Know so many who want to leave. I thought it was gr8 in kinder too but time and changes have caused it to fail.

Excellent school, PTA, teachers and administration. My daughter is in Kinder and we have not experienced anything negative with this elementary. The staff and teachers have been extremely pleasant and helpful in my experience. Wish their after school program, The Explorers, did not have such a long waiting list or they would open it up for more enrollment (if there is a waiting list, that speaks for itself).

Cannot say enough great things about Hexter. We bought our house before we even thought about school for our 2 year old (we just assumed we would do a private school) and we're amazed that our neighborhood school was blue ribbon and exemplary. The parent involvement is exceptional here. Our PTA meetings are full each month. I'm proud that my son goes to school here! This is a community here and we love it!

My two grandchildren have attended Hexter since Pre-K and Kindergarten. Our eleven year old will start Longfellow Career Exploration Academy this year but will miss Hexter so much. We have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy the schools atmosphere, great teachers, staff and parent involvement. I can only hope that Longfellow will provide the same such environment, teachers and staff. Parent involvement is so important as well. Working together and providing support to your children and school staff is what makes a school great.

Posted: September 25, 2012

This school is the most incompetent school I have ever encountered the principal especially with this being the first year she has a lot to learn. The influence of parents means nothing it goes in one ear and out the other so don t waste time trying to be involved or ask for certain things in regards to your child they will not listen or have empathy to situations. The expectations of the students are 500% they are living in a fairytale where everything is sweet with pink roses. There is no discipline plan in action i.e. detention/iss nothing set in place for guidelines other than perfection and if that is not met sending the child home. I will do everything I have to ensure the staff is reprimanded for making my child hate school at five years of age.

i'm giving this school 3 stars because it isn't altogether a bad school. there are many wonderful teachers and the sense of community is very strong as is evident in the PTA involvement and the incredibly successful fundraising efforts they have throughout the year. having said that, there are definitely some teachers who aren't that experienced and seem subpar or who are too tired and have let their enthusiasm slip. unless you're lucky enough to get certain teachers, it's almost a crapshoot. they are, however, better than most in the district from what i can gather by listening to other teachers and subs in DISD- this school is definitely a gem amongst the failed district. very sad. the principal is who you need to watch out for. she's highly politically motivated and many of her minions on the PTA are misguided about this. her best interests are focused on her reputation and her succession in rank, not on her school, kids, or community. she's guided by rumor and self-indulgance, she's incapable of making wise executive decisions when presented with crises, and will go out of her way to intimidate anyone who may voice their opinion. this school is full of sheep in that way.
