Have one kid as a Junior and another one coming into the school! There is a great environment of teachers that care. Like all the school, nothing is perfect but enough people care!

I had the worst time of my life in this school. Too much drugs, fights, a few opportunities and overall it has a bad environment.
My counselor didnt help at all and if youre Hispanic they will assume youre dumb and will put you in the worst classes despite clearly being ahead of them, I basically wasted a ton of time in this school, just stay away from it.

"Cultivating lifelong learners prepared to culturally engage in an evolving community" is the school mission statement. However, culturally engaging at Hillcrest involves rampant antisemitism. Jewish students are attacked, ridiculed, threatened and bullied and the administration does little to nothing about it. Every other "culture" is made to feel safe at Hillcrest except Jewish culture.

A grown adult teacher hit a student! She bucked up to the student and hit her after multiple times. The school is now blaming the student even after there being video and multiple witnesses. Be aware!

The cons greatly outweigh the pros at this school. The communication from the school is very poor. You will get an automated phone call every time there is testing or someone is "sick", but you will not get any information from the school about anything else unless you hunt, dig, and harass. We are starting our 3rd year at Hillcrest and I can't wait for it to be over. I have never gotten the sense that the administrative staff is actually very motivated to do their jobs and emails, of which you have to send many to get small things accomplished, are usually responded due in monosyllables. The counselors are also difficult to communicate with and do not address specific concerns when approached with them. The teaching staff is hit or miss. My student has had a few favorite teachers here, but very few. Do not expect any teacher to communicate with your or your child's concerns outside of union-sanctioned work hours. Resolution is tough thing to achieve as a parent of a student here. And don't expect your students to know the answers to anything. They are often as much in the dark. Academics-wise, apparently Hillcrest only gives homework to IB students and the AP English classes don't even read any literature. Not one single book all year. In fact, it's not clear what they do in any of the classes that is akin to learning. All work is class-based and predominantly only online which means a lot of learning loss after school. The class period, in my opinion, should be used for lecture and learning, not playing app-based games or filling out worksheets. Also, apparently PE is 90 minutes of kids staring at their phones while the "coach" does something else more important. I'm mostly very unimpressed with this school. They can't blame the population. I went to a Dallas County 5A school at the dawn of the internet when we still did class selections on paper and things ran like a well-oiled machine. For all the tax money and technology this school has, they don't make good use of it.

We transferred to another DISD school. The IB program was a ton of homework and as we started applying for colleges, they really didn't care unless students are at the top. If students are involved in activities, it is very difficult to get home from practices and complete homework. I guess if your child is a professional student it would be OK. We left the program. It was too much work with no payoff.

School has absolutely great teachers, but bullying is an awful problem. Principals are mediocre, and the bag checks are .. excessive.

This school was great once upon a time, however, it is quickly going downhill. Scores in all areas are plummeting. The leadership is allowing the school to continue to decline by creating an environment of hostility that causes teachers to leave. There are so many great teachers leaving and retiring this year that it is only going to get worse. It's sad to see a great school that turns into something as bad as this one has.

As a Hillcrest alumni, I will tell you that this school is truthfully an excellent school. The AP scores are substantial (and way better than woodrow's), and as long as you're a student that cares about their grades and works hard then you will succeed at this school. Basically if you slack then the teachers wont waste their time on you, but if you show interest then the teachers will help you learn. That's why this high school shapes such great minds, it forces you to do things yourself instead of having your teachers hand everything to you. Could use a better football team... basketball is great. Lots of minorities but odds are you wont have to deal with the trouble making hoodrats if you stick to ap and pre ap classes and do extra curricular. Lots of fun, truly a great high school experience all in all!
