I am not often at a loss for words, but it is almost impossible to overstate how wonderful the teachers are here! They are so invested in every child's success, and they have my children learning far beyond their grade level and offer a global perspective on all topics.

Posted: July 27, 2019

My children learn social emotional skills and develop a strong sense of service to their community.

Posted: July 27, 2019

Our new principal is accessible, thoughtful, and strategic. He's also a very pleasant guy to be around and seems to recognize that the excellent teachers are the lifeblood of the school's success.

I have not had personal experience with this issue.

Both my husband and I are lifelong products of private schooling, but we chose Walnut Hill Elementary over area private schools for our children because the academic standards are rigorous, the opportunity for gifted and talented dual language instruction is unique, and the parents and families at Walnut Hill Elementary are lovely. Our expectations have been exceeded across the board.

Nothing is perfect of course, and there is room for improvement in school wide communications with parents and family engagement in general. But these are issues that the school administration and teachers are determined to tackle, and we are thrilled to have found this school community.

The school has some of the best teachers. My son has grown so much at this school.

Posted: April 28, 2017

It really feels like a private school when you walk in... Everyone at this school is held to high expectations; parents, students, and teachers! The teachers and students are amazing at the school. The school is committed to meeting the needs of students.

This is obvious! If your child struggles they will find a way to transfer your beloved child out!

Posted: April 12, 2017

The students learn that only good grades matter or you will be transferred out.

Posted: April 12, 2017

I had a son who received special education services. They transferred him and several other students through the ARD process. I believe there is only a single digit number of special education students on this campus. If you believe your child may need some special education, then I would not recommend this school. Also, don't let the pictures of the rewards from TEA and the pictures with Edwin Flores with the Principal fool you. They hand select their students to achieve those rating. It was not done by the merit of the Principal or the teachers aiding to disadvantaged children!

My kids love this school! The new principal is great and has the school headed in the right direction.

Posted: August 17, 2016

The teachers know just how to balance homework with the daily lives of the students

Posted: August 17, 2016

Walnut Hill's teachers insist on good character and teach those skills to the students. They model good behavior and are consistent on demanding it.

I have two children who attend Walnut Hill. The school is one brightest bright spots in DISD. They have some of the most dedicated teachers in the state. That is the strength and the life blood of the school. Many of the teachers go above and beyond the call of duty to help our children. I drive by periodically after 7 and still see cars in the teacher's lot.
The school administration seems to be reaching out to the local community more than in recent years. They have increased communication with the neighborhood parents and have created partnerships with civic groups.
The campus grounds look so much nicer. Walking the halls, you see new paint and student work all over. When my first started years ago, the building looked like it was stuck in 1932. Today, it's got new technology, spruced up classrooms, and landscaping. Without question, I would send my child to Walnut Hill again

I enrolled my daughter, went out of my way to do a hardship transfer to this so called: " blue ribbon school ". Had her first and second grade teacher wanting to hold her back due to her dyslexia, 2 weeks into 2nd grade, not really wanting to work with her, finally when she is showing some improvement, they deny her, her 3rd year, in which I was not notified. lack of communication from teacher and principal, no meetings or conferences, had to call to find out she was denied due to grades and tardiness, just an excuse to get rid of her, not impressed at all.

While the teachers and teacher aids were extremely helpful and encouraging the new administration lacks communication and shows extreme prejudice against those that help build the school to its known A+ rating. It says something when you have a high staff turnover rate for the 2016-2017 school year, you are pushing families out by creating a uniform change without positive feedback from the school community, and you disbanned all special education programs from the school, to make room for what many sees as a 3 year old daycare center?

The school has an amazing character development programs and the students are so well behaved.

Posted: July 8, 2015

The school provides a great learning environment for ALL! The teachers always go above a beyond...

Posted: July 8, 2015

The school is welcoming to parents and has many programs to encourage parental involvement. Walnut Hill has won many national awards and been named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. It is definitely the best school in Dallas ISD!

This school is a diamond in the rough of elementary schools in Dallas Texas! Not only is the proof in the state scores, but when you meet the teacher, or walk in in the halls, and even see how happy the students are you'll know. It's a great school!! Everyone including the afterschool instructor has a vested interest in the students success!

My son attended WH for six years and now my daughter will be completing her sixth year in 2014-15. My daughter is doing great in her studies and loves the school. She's been well prepared to get into one of the middle school magnets. We have no complaints about the principal or staff. My daughter absolutely loves her teachers, although she complains about one of them giving too much homework. But what kid doesn't complain about that?

Posted: June 9, 2014

June, 2014 Sadly, the principal @ this school is horrific. Seems to be unable to embrace her role as a parent communicator and authoritarian. Is very divisive versus unifying. Appears to be completely out of touch with her student body as well as her teachers. Exudes hostile vibes, a 'bully', which is not what I would want trickling down to my children. The nepotism is rampant. And, if you have a special education or special needs child, run, don't walk in the opposite direction. The support of the principal is simply not there and the results can be catastrophic. Do not allow the peachy location or the accomplishments of the previous principals fool you. And that KidZone after-school program, do not leave your children unattended there! A new principal could make this gem of a school once again stellar and the teachers and parents once again proud as opposed to running them off! It is time for a much needed change. Think I'm disappointed?

nfortunately, this beautiful school is hiding an disappointing situation. The principal is aloof and distant She seems to be out if her element and unable to fully complete her responsibilities to staff, parents and students. School personnel in office are constantly on their own phones ignoring those who arrive for help. The afterschool program is poorly monitored and students roam the school unsupervised. Teachers seem to be dedicated wholly to their students despite the lack of direction and leadership from the top. Although the test scores are high this is solely the work of the long hours put in by the teachers.

This is a great school my daughter is in kindergarden and her teacher Mrs. Villareal is awesome. My daughter has learned so much this year thanks to her teacher's. Everyone here is very friendly and is always willing and waiting to help.

Walnut Hill is a great school! The teachers are committed to their students. The principal is easy to talk and clearly cares about kids. I encourage people to come and tour the school to see how wonderful Walnut Hill is!

I moved my kids from Tom Field Elementary to this school. Bad move. Within a year they were there, they retrogressed academically. We have to move them back to Tom Field next academic year.

The school has really turned around in the last 3.5 years. The principal, teachers and staff have all come together and are working for the best interest of the children. The school not only focuses on the state assessment but is really promoting good solid teaching. The principal has worked on establishing strong parent-teacher relationships. Every month she hosts a breakfast and answers parents questions. I encourage everyone to go tour the school and meet the principal and staff.

Teachers are great with only a few exceptions. The principal is in way over her head. I agree that KidzZone is the bright spot at the school.

Posted: August 28, 2011

The leadership at the school is non-existent and disorganized. The school meetings usually start at least 15 minutes late and no one seems to know what is going on. The best thing about this school is the after school program with Mwana Williams (KidzZone).
