This school harms driven students by lowering standards to keep things equal. It lacks support for high achievers and ignores student and parental concerns. Consider moving your child to Medlin Middle School or Worthington Middle School for a better environment. Everything is more about the mirage than the meat of what they need to be doing. If they create a newsletter they believe they have somehow achieved the goal of child development.

Main ConcernsStifled Growth:
- High-achieving students and athletes are held back instead of challenged. Those running their programs know nothing about the them.

- Ignored Issues: Administration does not address or care about student problems. Disregards parental concerns and safety issues.

- Unequal Focus: The environment favors underachievers over driven learners. This school actively promoted and focuses on having high achievers shrink to make others comfortable. This shows when you meet other schools in various competitions.

I'm a seventh grader at Tidwell. Now, Tidwell is an amazing school. Their fine arts? Top notch. I love orchestra (shout out to Mrs. Harris) and it's probably my favorite class. The education they provide for the school is amazing- I'm pretty sure they even offer Geometry classes for math. Now for the other kids? Yeah, there's some bad apples. I'm part of the 1% of one of the ethnicites in this school, and throughout the 1-2nd quarter, I've had to deal with a minimum of 1 to even 10 racial insults or slurs put to me, which really broke me. Near the 3 & 4th quarter, it happened much less often as people got used to my race and were tired of trying to get a reaction, though it still happened ocuasionally. The counslers really don't feel like any help; when I'm with them I feel very uncomfortable. They try to make me feel comfortable just to lie to try to get answers out of you. I am not able to open up to any teachers very well. Other than all of that, althought that may seem bad, I LOVE this school.

If you are a parent of a first time middle schooler and need extra direction and care, this school is not for you. The communication is horrific! Wasn’t made aware that gym uniforms were to be ordered during summer. Wasn’t made aware that the electives that are required for every student costs an arm and leg. My daughter is in band and instruments aren’t made available unless you actively buy a monthly rental at a rental shop or you flat out buy your own, which can cost thousands. You also are required to pay for the years band events, including the end of the year “final” where you are required to drive your kid to a school in another town so they can be graded by another school. Why is another school involved in this? Why do we have to pay for this? During my son’s elective choosing, he choose football. I figured it would be another class like art, gym, etc. No, I am required to get him a physical, pay for equipment and shuffle him around to other schools once a week so he can play competitive football against other teams. Why is this information not made aware to the parents when they have a student choose their electives? Electives should be free as they are MANDATORY. This is highly expensive especially if you have more than one kid going to Tidwell. The communication between teachers and parents is abysmal and basically nonexistent. Staff treat you like a nuisance when you reach out to them with questions. My son got bullied and forced to fight twice last year, resulting in ISS because he defended himself. It’s obvious the students are not watched as I have personally seen older students vaping, cursing out adults and completely running around like they own the place. Just overall, many changes need to be made with this institution before they get sued after a child becomes injured.

I am a current 8th grade at John M. Tidwell Middle school. In my opinion Tidwell is an amazing school with a welcoming staff and community. There is just one thing though, one of our schools new assistant principles(Im not gonna say their name) has a reputation of being biased and a little too harsh on many of the people i know personally to be good kids. They have on many accounts been rude to me specifically, I dont know if thats just the way they talk or if its because I am a person of different color and ethnicity, it made me feel bad about myself. But over the last 3 years Tidwell has given me many opportunities to show my talent and express my creativity. So in my heart, no matter the administration, Tidwell will always be a great school.

I am a current 8th grader and most teachers fail to put in grades while I'm getting in trouble saying it's my fault for not turning in assignments, their doing whatever and not using work time in a reasonable manner, there is a difference between actually teaching and letting the kids do whatever they want in your classroom. I personally suffer from ADHD and it is very difficult some of my teachers care while others could care less. I am also in choir, all kinds of sports, I'm also in Spanish, college credit classes, and in all honors classes, while I should be passing my classes because I am an all-A student but I'm not again because those teachers couldn't care at all to put grades in therefore I'm not passing. I did feel as if I had to switch science teachers because I was given too much homework and schoolwork in a very little amount of time. That teacher would give us a whole STAAR-like test and expect us to finish in 45 minutes. The school nurse is terrible I vomited 2 at school and went to the nurse and she said I was fine gave me a few peppermints and crackers and sent me back to class I went to the doctor after school and it turned out I had food poisoning. Also in the hallway, I hugged my boyfriend bye and that I would see him next period and we both got detention, so apparently I can't even hug my boyfriend or hold hands with him. I love my teachers but they are so strict for no reason, the whole point of school is for them to do their job and teach us not to become detectives and be all in my personal life. Honestly I rate this school a 4/5 even though there are bad things there are also some good things as well.

As a current Tidwell Middle school 8th grade student, I would describe my overall experience as rather positive. Firstly, homework. The school currently seems to be rather light on homework, only assigning it when students fail to complete their normal schoolwork, or when particular concepts need to be instilled greater. This does indeed seem to be a rather effective and fair approach to assigning homework, so I assigned the school 4/5 stars. Nextly, Teachers. The majority of teachers do indeed seem to nurture a very positive and controlled learning environment, often punctuating their discussions with relatable, funny, or sarcastic comments, and assigning generally fair and reasonable schoolwork. With this said, there are definitely teachers who don't seem to have quite the grip on the classroom dynamic, or who are more akin to assigning schoolwork that could be labeled as generally unconducive to learning. So, I assigned this category 3/5 stars. Next, leadership. The school does indeed focus on trying to instill leadership through various programs and lectures, and as one might expect, some are better than others. I'll keep this category brief, as I don't personally believe that leadership building should necessarily be a school's priority. 3/5 stars. Next, character. This school also takes a similar approach to instilling strong character into its students as it does to instill leadership qualities. Some of the lectures hit and some don't. You can often see this effect on my peers, as some do such things as often violate academic integrity, fail to realize the overall gravity of their words, neglecting to include others in the typical "cliques" and social groups, and other rather questionable decisions. This prompted me to give this category 3/5 stars. Nextly, learning differences. Of the multiple mentally challenged students attending Tidwell, they are almost completely properly cared for academically, socially, and emotionally. 4/5 stars. Lastly, bullying. Having attended this middle school for nearly 3 years, I have never once encountered an incident that might be classified as downright "bullying." There are occasional fights, playful banter, and the occasional, but overall there isn't a significant superiority complex that would warrant any bullying. 4/5 stars.

Some teachers dont care what you do, others are flat out rude
My teacher keeps me after the dismissal bell.

Posted: April 16, 2018

Absolutely not. Kids are constantly seen bullying, cursing and doing just totally inappropriate things

Posted: April 16, 2018

With the people who run this school, I dont feel safe. Ironically one of the main goals is to keep kids safe but its far from the truth

Posted: April 16, 2018

They do okay, however some teachers do try to make you feel embarrassed.

Posted: April 16, 2018

Yeah right. There are pretty much 0 consequences for bullying and its often ignored.

The teachers are highly educated and effective. There are some young ones; however, that is to be expected in almost every field. The experienced teachers definitely outweigh them.

Posted: April 24, 2017

Students are able to check multiple sources for up-to-date homework information. Better yet, most teachers allow students to complete homework in class and the school now has study hall on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Posted: April 24, 2017

If you look at any other sites that review schools, you will see Tidwell is one of the highest ranking. Despite the constant demands on teachers and students the achievement levels have only risen- not only with STAAR, but more so in every UIL Academic competition and music. They are among the top performers in the state. My son and daughter are happy almost everyday- that is A LOT to ask for with an 11 and 13 year olds.

No communications and do not follow Individualized Education Program (IEP) for special needs children. Autistic child and another student were sent home on the wrong bus. Parents were not notified until 2 hours after the bus stop scheduled time. The school is understaffed and the Vice Principle is under qualified for the position.

We have moved this summer to get away from Tidwell. There were a couple of teachers who were bright spots in the year, but we have had more bad experiences than good. It started with the buses, where my child was subject to witnessing constant profanity and physical fighting (there were only middle school students on this bus). The school was overcrowded, and it seemed obvious the staff was overwhelmed. If you child was in band, it was expected you pay out of pocket for private lessons before or after school. Pre-AP classes were nearly the same as on-level. Communication was sub-par. The nurse would send students back to class unless there was blood or vomit, and sometimes vomit was ok. There were some very talented teachers at this school, but there were others who were not. A couple couldn't enter grades in the gradebook timely, and we would learn an assignment was missing weeks after the due date. a few times it would be my child's fault;more times it was not. My child's tablet didn't work (keyboard didn't work, didn't connect to wi-fi) for the majority of the school year, and very little was done about it due to budgets. We ended up buying a laptop. It seemed like the principals were too busy putting out fires to actually run the place. We are all relieved we have moved away. Best of luck to all!

There seems to be a real disconnect at this school with the teachers and communicating with parents and each other. Its quite surprising really at how bad communication is with a handful of teachers. Its interesting that despite having an assistant principal for each grade, they still cannot pull it together. Its frustrating at the best of times. But the young teachers do have a lot of time to take selfies and post them constantly on their class pages, despite the serious need for additional training on communication and professionalism. I get no where, and frankly, have given up. Even the school district couldnt care less, they returned a call four months after I had left a voicemail. I guess they set the example. As much as we pay in taxes up in North Fort Worth for this school system, you would think you woukd get what you pay for.

This school have help my kid because they help her through everything so you can say all that you want about the school but I think it is a great school and it has help my daughter with her problems

Posted: February 25, 2015

Please ignore the other comments below about Tidwell. I have now had all three of my children at Tidwell and couldn't be more happier. The teachers have always been considerate of my special needs student- especially the 6th grade teachers, reading being his favorite! Spending years at Granger Elementary and getting daily updates, it does take a little bit to get used to the communication procedures, but the teachers are teaching 100+ students as opposed to 20. All my kids and their friends are happy there- be positive. Remember when choosing a school most reviews are written by disgruntled parents looking for a voice, not a true picture of the school.

It is extremely disappointing knowing that my child hates the school that he attends (Tidwell). My child has been humiliated, belittled, and neglected by the unprofessional, childish so call teachers that are employed at Tidwell to the point that he has no desire to attend school. I feel that the teachers are only there to get a paycheck. I also feel like most of the staff that I have come in contact with put on a front as if they really care. I would not recommend anyone to even bring their dog or pet to attend this school.

My son has thrived at Tidwell. He has always been a good student; however, he struggled in adjusting to middle school as we moved into NISD. His teachers have shown dedication to helping him advance in his education. They have been there every step of the way with tutorials, parent communication, and encouragement. The coaching staff has done a great job of pushing my son to work hard and develop strong work ethic in class as well as extracurricular activities. He has been afforded the opportunity to participate in a top notch orchestra program. The Top Titans program encourages a well-rounded student with emphasis on academics, citizenship and community service. The principal has addressed our concerns promptly and with great consideration for our time and our son's best interests. The key to a great educational experience is a partnership with the school, child and parents. All three must be all in to make it work. Through Titan Dads, and other parent involvement opportunities this has been one of the best middle school experiences imaginable. I highly recommend TMS! Go, Titans.

This school sucks! The teachers suck and VERY greedy for their checks! The lack of communication is HORRIFIC! If you're moving into the area DON'T JUST DON'T! My son has been bullied as well as my daughter! They didn't do a thing about it!

This school is horrible, terrible, and just plain out bad. If you want your child to be harassed daily by other students, this is a perfect school. I'm looking for another school now.

Posted: June 7, 2014

Recently my son was harmed in a pepper spray accident at this school. He was denied any immidiate help, and like his other peers had to suffer with irritated throaghts for the remainder of the day. I want not informed of this until he came home later that day. If you don't care about your child's education then by all means send them here, but if you care about your kid this is the last place for them to be. The principal at this school doesn't know how to take action. She cares more about silent lunch than a child's safety. I will pray for your children if they are unfortunate enough to attend this school. I wish I could give this school a -1 star rating.

Posted: June 5, 2014

I would agree with the other comments parents have left. I am hoping administration takes notice and does something soon. The principal is an unprofessional and uninformed administrator who needs to be evaluated before being allowed to continue another year. The communication with some teacher's is lacking in a way that is beyond understanding. This school is one of 2 schools in NISD that is designated for SEAC students, yet the SEAC staff is always understaffed and never able to carry out the promises they make. Children aren't taught but instead handed grades so that the SEAC staff does not have to provide the education they are rightfully afforded. I know that other middle schools in this district are much more competent so there is no reason why this one is as bad as it is. There are a few shining stars at that school and I really hope that they do not choose to leave due to the lack of professionalism shown by other teachers and administration. NISD, you need to do your due diligence and start looking into this school before your ranking goes from a 9 to a 1 on this website!

My child is a straight A student and feels like this school is not challenging enough compared to her old elementary school. That is dissapointing and unacceptable. If an elementary school (that was in an entirely different district) is more challenging to a student than a middle school that is in one of the best districts in the state then there is something fundamentally wrong within the structure of this school. The so-called "Pre-AP" classes don't enhance the education of the student (but at least they are more competent than the On-Level classes). Some teachers in high-school classes sit around on their phones for the majority of the class period, procrastinating (It's as if they're watching Netflix on their phones or have something extremely important to say via texting. If our students get in trouble for texting and have their phones taken away, the teachers should as well). As a parent, I'd like to think my taxes are going to good use, but I can see they're not, seeing as how the school is so cheap (but if I wasn't a parent I'd sincerely consider moving out of this area). Overall, this school should be given an even worse rating than I have the power to give it. Leave now.

Tidwell IS NOT the school you want your child to attend. Both of my children have complained about their learning experiences at this particular NorthWest ISD school. I myself, feel that the communication level is ridiculous from the teachers. Also, the professionalism from the administrative department is absolutely embarrassing to know that my childern attend this school. The way that the disciplinary actions are implemented are also absurd. The Teachers at Tidwell acts as if they are students as well, some are immature and are incapable of displaying good leadership skill to the students. From what my childern come home and tell me about what is being discuss by the teachers is absolutely irrelevant to my kids education.... Seems as if all the teachers want is a check!!!

Posted: April 20, 2014

The communication skills when it relates to the "parent-teacher" at Tidwell is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Some of the teachers at this school are very UNPROFESSIONAL. Also, the administrative department could use a course in "how to do my job"!!!!!!!!!

Teachers slack.Education lacks. Teachers will do anything to make their students look better versus teaching. The teachers give out hundreds. If you want a education and sports ,then Tidwell is for you. But if your not an athlete and you care more about the education, then Tidwell is not for you. Algebra is cool though. I hear Wilson and Medlin are better.

I ve been at this school for the past 3 years. The hallways and bathrooms are kept really clean throughout the day. My favorite class at this school has to be Algebra 1. The teacher is amazing; his class is a fun environment but, a very educational one too. Last year every one of his students passed the end of course exam. If you aren t an athlete you have to work twice as hard academically. 100 s are practically given out like candy to athletes with a coach teacher. They mostly don t even turn in their work, but still make an A. There s a new principal this year. At first she was really involved but now I can t even recall the last time I saw participating. She hasn t changed much at this school besides the fact many fun things have been taken away this year. Do you see a connection? The food here is bad health and taste wise. That s why I ve been packing my lunch for the past 2 years. Most classes are taught by the teacher sitting down and the students copying notes off of the screen which is bad. The clubs here are very bad. The sponsors don t even care. If you have to go to this school DO NOT go in an on-level class since the teachers who teach these classes don t even care.

Absolutely LOVE this school! Excellent teachers and the administration is very active and involved. Looking forward to two more years!
