Our first year at this school was okay, mainly because my son had a great teacher, Mrs. Singleton, and a great principal, Mrs. Williams. Unfortunately, the quality of learning overall is not the best, which is reflected in the schools 5/10 rating.
From my experience, the school seems to cater more to Hispanic and white students. Many of the teachers dont seem to know how to effectively communicate with or understand Black children, which may explain why only about 3% of the students at the school are Black.
Theyre not allowed to talk during lunch, and even during PE the coach expects them to sit down and stay quiet.
Since the new principal took over, things have gotten worse. She appears incompetent when it comes to handling behavior issues. Instead of doing proper research, checking cameras, or gathering all the facts, she often just assumes or takes another childs word for what happened.
Based on our experience, I would strongly caution Black parents before enrolling their child here.

My kids have been at the school for over 5 years. I would highly recommend Montessori for early childhood. Once the kids get older unless your child is extremely advanced or self motivated, please understand this is not the pedagogy for most kids in a public setting. The faculty is very passionate about Montessori and I feel like they truly care about these kids. However I feel that the state has such rigid parameters its impossible to implement true Montessori and unfortunately although the teachers are loving, there is not enough money to give the ones that may have a more challenging set of students etc the proper resources. But I do think the admin does an incredible job considering the challenges they face. And although the school is diverse, it seems to be very broken socially and cliquey. I found that extremely disappointing as I expected more unity and for that aspect to reflect a more Montessori attitude. Sadly that is on the parents but I do feel like progress is coming and admin is open to change and constantly trying to improve.

My kids love this school. I like the environment and size. No complaints and we have been here 6 years. I like that it goes through middle school.

Poor. The school is very clicky with zero diversity. Nearly 70% students are minority with nearly 100% in position of Power/Authority White-PTA, Room Moms, SBDM board etc. Absy no Diversity in the school.

School does not give homework. I do not understand that approach. Thats why their rating and STAAR tests are poor. If the kids want to test into TAG programs they will be poorly prepared.

Teachers and staff have preferential treatment to certain kids.

There is a lot of bullying from the older kids to younger kids and staff fails to acknowledge it.

My children have developed a love for learning and exploration, they actively learn topics presented in a practical and real way, thanks to the Montessori method used and the knowledgeable teachers and staff applying it. I love this school and I am grateful that my children are able to participate in the bilingual program.

This is the most engaged PTA I have ever seen. We work in a tight knit group in this school and work to bring more parents to engagement. Parents have great relationship with the teachers, and the families are supportive of the classroom. The district is so good at getting us what we need-- and when they can't the parents close the gap. Such a diverse and welcoming school.

The Montessori-trained teachers seem to be very well trained, patient, effective and organized. I know they have put much more work into their environment than most traditional teachers, which is already quite a lot. Their persistence, dedication and effort really show in their classrooms.

Not being "attached" to a "regular" classroom, I am not sure of the amount of homework given, but my perception is that the students do not have a burdening amount of homework outside of school. As a frustrated parent whose children are at another school and are constantly burdened with rote busy-work that affects our entire family time, I know how important it is to not overburden students and families, and Mata does not seem to do this. Perhaps this follows from the Montessori Method.

We entrust students with responsibility and allow the development of the whole child, expecting honorable character and equitable treatment.

I have never been at a school that is more dedicated to what is truly best for the students as much as Mata. Aside from mandates by the district/state that must be followed, the emphasis is not on how the numbers make the administration "look", but on how we can best develop the students and be a quality staff.

This is our first year and the first year Mata has become a Montessori school. Cannot say enough wonderful things about our principal, Mrs. Vega. We have an amazing PTA and strong community for this school of choice. So happy to be apart of Mata!

Mata is a brand new montessori program in the Woodrow feeder pattern. We left a "10" school to attend it. The school is fine but seems understaffed for a montessori program. I am not sure how many people are truly certified--beyond the quickie training. People are passionate, but there are issues. Montessori and testing don't go together and there is a lot of testing at Mata. It is a very diverse student body and that can have appeal. There seem to be quite a few discipline problems for such a tiny school. Eventually it will be a pre-k through 8 school. The jury is still out for our child. We will see what happens as the school adds grade levels. The parents and staff are trying hard.

Mata is now an elementary Montessori school. It is in its fledgling year, so it appears much of the information on this site is about the old Mata, a middle school. Mata is the greatest school that my children have had the pleasure of going to, and we've been to quite a few because of moves. The principal, teachers, and staff work overtime to make the best possible Montessori education available to students who prefer to go the public, rather than private, route. They are confident in offering their school to the entire public, as opposed to just a select few, because they know that their system will work. I have never seen such dedication in my life, and the waiting list to get in to the school should be proof enough that the 2 out of 10 rating the school has been given by this site is completely outdated.
