I am writing this review with my son to include his honest feedback.
As a parent, I am very happy with the school and the academic program they provide. I feel like my son is advancing at a good pace and his teachers pursue excellence and have robust communication with parents with regards to school events and academic performance. When deciding to enroll at Hornado I did extensive research comparing this school with other junior high schools in the El Paso area, and Hornado stood out for its high percentage of student, students meeting math science, and reading proficiencies, which was important to me.
From my sons perspective the strengths of the school are:
1) the music program- they have a fantastic band/orchestra/choir.
2) the teachers stand out for their willingness to help before and after school, if a student is struggling with a concept which shows they truly care.
Weaknesses of the school include occasional overly harsh punishments for small misdemeanors such as forgetting student IDs, also the traffic for pick up and drop off.
There seems to be a very small group of troublemakers that sometimes get into fights, but that doesnt seem to spill over into the general student body or cause issues such as bullying in my sons opinion (6th grader).
Overall, we are very happy here and I would recommend the school others.

I want to start this off by saying that this school is horrible as I recently attended from 2022-2024 for all 3 years. I was always a student that acted out for attention but the disciplinary actions taken were either ridiculous or just not reasonable. A simple thing like having colored hair lands you in iss for as many days as possible until you remove it, people that got caught smoking didnt even get as much time. The teachers there are super overworked and some of them are very immature and don't report violations to admin. The admin is horrible as well, they want to catch you doing anything and never let students live as well as not being on anybody's side when a conflict happens and makes both parties seem like absolutely in the wrong but there's no clear answer as to who's wrong. I was bullied very badly at this school and no counselor even dared to help and APs would just tell me, "well you don't think that it's because you did something to them?." I was physically bullied and also choked out once in 6th grade but my teacher pretended that nothing happened and never reported it to staff. No student was let in until 7:00 and I remember showing up once at 6:50 and they wouldn't let me in until 7, so id be in the literal cold in the winter for a good 10 minutes just because they didnt want to deal with kids. All of the campus patrol was creepy as well, some would make inappropriate jokes to girls and guys and then dare to say they're a mandated reporter after someone else said something absurd. All of this needs to get out there and I hope more than half of the staff gets fired and please don't send your kid to this school!!!

I have withdrawn my children from this school because of Bullying from staff never the less, not even the students. Administration is horrible they are very self centered and egocentric. There is no communication building from these employees that claim to be educated in teaching children.
NO BUENO

I attended Hornedo Middle School for the entire 3 years they offer there only 2 years ago. Many parents send their children here due to good reviews, but Im here to tell you now that this school is awful and disguises itself as a blessing so innocent parents who dont know better send their children here.
First of all, Hornedos staff have no idea what to do with students. Classrooms would have over 40 students which would stress both teachers and other students out. I remember the desks all being clustered together, preventing us from having any personal space. Teachers couldnt focus on one-on-one time to help their students and had to instead help everyone at once despite already going through lessons multiple times beforehand.
In 8th grade, the algebra class had to take their algebra STAAR test in the dirty cafeteria. In case youre wondering: no, they didnt get any chairs. They had to do an extremely difficult test while sitting on the floor with no personal space whatsoever.
The staff is demeaning and promotes every student to be the exact same as the next. Creativity isnt appreciated here whatsoever. Theyre forceful and rude as well. In 7th grade we would be forced to come to school extra early for orchestra during the winter - Im talking 6:30 in the morning. It would be freezing out and I remember getting horrible colds. Do you think they let me and the other students in on time, though? Nope! We were forced to sit in below freezing temperatures, and when we tried to enter through the side door the janitor would kick us out.
Before my graduation I had straight As. I worked hard that entire year, ultimately ruining both my physical and mental well-being. Despite this, my certificate had AB honors. They made a mistake ON the day of my graduation. Fortunately it was fixed, but it was horrible and embarrassing.
The counselors would admit to us often that they made Snapchat accounts pretending to be other students so they could see what kids were posting afterschool off campus. This is illegal - an invasion of privacy. Yet, when pointed out, we were quickly dismissed.
However, the bullying here was awful - not that the counselors cared, though. Boys would touch girls inappropriately extremely often and get away with it each time. Im speaking from experience on this one. It was disgusting and made me feel horrible - it made my friends feel horrible.
Please, dont send your kids here. Theyll struggle to be happy ever again.

Homework is the sole reason most students dislike school, its not as bad here, though it is a pain having to go through it when we already spend several hours at school.

No excuses is taken way too far to work. The teachers dont take reason seriously because of this. In a zoom meeting, a teacher kept saying I was using excuses for using the chat as I was unable to unmute my microphone.

Simply put, no. The schools main theme is No excuses, and the teachers cant seem to draw the line between excuses and actual reason. Because of this, students who often forget are straight up bullied by the teachers more than other students.

Though I havent encountered any bullies here, I feel as if the teachers are the bullies, as some of them lower the self esteem of students with a low average, instead of trying to help them. Regarding bullies within the student body, I will say that most of my experiences with other schools in this district have handled it poorly or even not at all. What a shame.

Barely got past the first 9 weeks and it isnt going well for me. The teachers ruin my self esteem, the school lunch is not the most appetizing, and going back to the building is executed poorly, to say the least.

They are bias, rude, and some are bad at teaching. I do NOT feel supported by my teachers.
Posted: October 28, 2018
A small amount of people support and help. Many others are bias, rude, and overall really awful.
Posted: October 28, 2018
People here dont want to be the leader. They want to be on the top just so they can feel like the best, and show off.
Posted: October 28, 2018
People here, teachers especially, humiliate people for them, and doubt them for their disability.
Posted: October 28, 2018
Overwhelming amount of homework, and they grade awfully. I barely learn things, even if they teach it.
Posted: October 28, 2018
Awful. People here, teachers, students, and even staff, are really awful and rude. I would change schools if I had the chance.

I I served as a substitute teacher at this school multiple times. The students are rather well behaved and the administration seems to be very strict on discipline. When the bell rings there are no students playing in the halls.
The students and teachers are above average but the office staff is one of the worst I have come in contact with, second only to Coronado HS. They were rude and treated me like a nuisance. When I went to sign out the door was locked but there were 3 women inside and they refused to open the door; just walked behind closed doors like I hadn't seen them.
If you visit don't let the less than stellar office staff put you off an otherwise good school.

Excellent GT program that makes the kids accountable for their work. Huge band/symphony program that encourages participation.

Wonderful school with great teachers and a supportive principal. Very involved PTA. The location is excellent and the facilities are first class.

For as great as this school is supposed to be I was unimpressed and so glad we moved! My son was at the top of his class until his GT math teachers stopped teaching?! Either you do it on your own or your out of luck. He asked for help and she said she couldn't tutor him or even answer any of his questions because she was too busy.
And there is a huge problem with bullying. The school is too big and the counselor didn't do anything about the problem. She made it much worse when she had my son and another kid come talk it out after a third kid said something. ?!?
Posted: March 26, 2016
Not all, but some. Some of the teachers are truly great at what they do, others just don't care and expect the students to teach themselves.

Student here- i was in the GT classes. This school is a great school academically. The teachers and staff members are friendly and helpful AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GET PUSHY. There are teachers (Like Ms. Benford) children dislike, but she simply runs her classroom as an intensive workspace. The children, however are very rude and condescending at times. The general atmosphere generated by the students is dark and cynical, with lots of black comedy. I recommend this school academically, but the students are another story...

Really like this school! So glad I did my research and decided to live on the west side of town and have my children attend Hornedo. They are very military friendly and keep you informed of all the happenings. The new military liaison is very informative and plans activities for the military kids so they can get to know each other. The school also doesnt put up with any bull and I like that! If you are looking to move to El Paso the biggest mistake you could make is NOT having your children attend Hornedo Middle.
