I dont recommend sending your kids here if they aren't white, catholic, or christian. The teachers show obvious bias and I have recently had a friend break down after class due to numerous racist comments from the students as well as heavy attacks from the teacher when she wasn't acting out. She is the only African American in the class, and was criticized the whole period while the white students made gawking and disgusting remarks about her appearance and culture.

Was a student here a few years back for middle school, left with trauma and issues that I still battle with today due to the racism and bullying I experienced here. Please do not send your child here if they are of color, this school does not cater to their needs. The detention was was weird as we were made to sit with out hands on the table and look forward without making a sound or a move for 30 mins, if we made a move then we would get five minutes added. A teacher once screamed in my face for walking the incorrect way in the hall, and no I am not being dramatic. Her face was less then an inch to mine and she screamed at me in a very aggressive way. Oh yeah! I was also sent to the office for accidentally bringing the wrong notebook to class and asking if I could swap it out on the first day of the semester. There were constant mean comments being made to me by white male students because I am Latina. This is just the tip of the ice burg and I could go on, but overall, please do not send your kid here if you are not white, conservative, or catholic.

The school food is horrible, the school has incredibly racist students, horrible teaching methods, and if you have a child with mental disabilities dont bring them here. This school doesnt have enough stimulates for a mental disabled child nor do they try to accommodate your child. If your child is mentally ill then the school will make their mental illness worse. Teachers are on a constant power trip and the school expects you to provide everything for you child(so if you are financially unstable dont come here because they school with DRAIN You) the only thing this school provides for your child are the textbooks. Many of the students are kind but there are many racist children that have assaulted (verbally and physically) ethnic children. The school food is horrible and you have to pay for it. Students have nearly zero free time out of school because of the piles of homework and assignments. The school has ZERO proper funding. The school constantly has school funding events but the money we get suddenly disappears and goes to touch screen laptops that classes only use once a week if they are lucky. Your child is stuck with the same group of students for every class, so if your childs getting bullied by classmates they CANT switch classes.
I am currently a student at GHI and the school is horrible.

Comparatively, the education you will receive here is above and beyond the public school status quo. The rules are strict, but to me that does not affect quality of the teaching. Many of the teachers are young, and while perhaps inexperienced have munificent passion for their subjects. The one difficulty is these very classically minded people connecting with the student body. If your kid has any interest in learning, especially the humanities, then it will be a fantastic experience. Otherwise, though, I warn that it might not be so pleasant.

The workload is ridiculous. After working hard during the day the students are expected to comply with additional work at home that sometimes includes concepts not even reviewed in class.
Posted: November 26, 2019
Most lack the experience to handle children. There is a lot of rotation and that makes the education inconsistent.
Posted: November 26, 2019
Kids are taught to be respectful and not talk back to teachers for absolutely NO reason (even to justify an action that mightve been perceived as wrong). The school is teaching the kids to comply with rules, to be FOLLLOWERS instead of LEADERS.
Posted: November 26, 2019
The headmasters are good, but the whole system and culture of the school makes it hard to lead.
Posted: November 26, 2019
Not personally experienced, but a close friend has had numerous problems because of the school not providing the services for her child. The child was even labeled among teachers.

After experiencing the school for almost 5 years we have found nothing but a very rigorous system where childrens needs are not being met. The school is too focused on academics and bringing money to have decent facilities. Great Hearts is ignoring the needs of the new generations by providing a curriculum that is solely focused on a philosophical approach without preparing kids for the demands of the world.
We are looking forward to getting out of Great Hearts.

We and other families experienced absolute rule followers with little wisdom used in addressing issues.
Posted: March 14, 2019
I have no experience with this. Some parents took their children with special needs to other schools to have their needs met.
Posted: March 14, 2019
The discipline procedures followed were in keeping with strict rule following rather than thoughtfully addressing situations. We found the athletic coaches were very good with the kids and our child in particular.

Posted: March 14, 2019
Some are passionate about their subject and teach very well. Others are passionate and do not teach or relate well to students.
Posted: March 14, 2019
I think the school primarily develops strong compliance among those that remain and does not give the students the tools they need to develop character.
Posted: March 14, 2019
We had high hopes and felt very fortunate to have made the cut for admission. We even thought it odd after the first year that any family would voluntarily give up their child's place and very experienced teachers would move on. They were the smart ones, I guess. We stayed for a few years and found the school did not live up to its promise. We left once we woke up and realized it wasn't going to. Very disappointed.

Safety is not a priority to any of the faculty members, after an incident with a gun threat. It wasn't reported until 2 days later when worried parents got tired of waiting to confirm that their child won't be shot at school.

How would I rate my experience, take a guess....oh yeah, 1/100 stars (.1/10)

Some good experienced teachers, but many many more that are young, inexperienced and from UD.
Posted: August 14, 2017
We take issue with their detention policy of having students sit facing forward with their hands flat in front of them for 30 minutes with additional 5 minutes added if they move in any way. This feels counter productive to building intrinsic motivation and building character. Sometimes things put in place to gain short term compliance can hinder the longer term goal of building capacity for a student.

Our experience is that leadership has not been very accessible, approachable or responsive.

The climate in the upper school can feel hostile toward students of different ethnic cultures and backgrounds. This hostility and targeting can come from both students and faculty.
Posted: August 14, 2017
Overall we have felt disappointed and sad with our experience. We will most definitely be looking for different options for our children for next year.
Posted: August 3, 2017
This school teaches students to be accountable for themselves. This is a valuable life lesson that will grow the kids into competent, responsible adults. The world needs more of this.
Posted: August 3, 2017
It is amazing to watch what happens when a school hires people who are passionate about the topics they are teaching, instead of simply hiring someone because they are certified in teaching. Our children all come home enthusiastically teaching us what they have learned at school that day!

Here we have found an inclusive, diverse, and very compassionate school community.
Posted: August 3, 2017
This is the jewel of the school. There are no politics. Just extremely compassionate, highly competent (some young!) people who are leading this school. We are truly blessed that our children have these leaders to role model for them!

There have been very minor incidents which the headmasters very promptly resolved with meetings with appropriate parties. They are very effective, and do not tolerate even slight infractions.

It is a little difficult to understand what's for homework and when . Student is require to track it down so if they don't it's a little frustrating. But I do think it helps hold the students accountable some. Wish there was a better way for parents to know so that we could guide our students to in doing it on their own and keep them accountable and on track before they fall behind.

My son is about to complete his kindergarten year at Great Hearts Irving and as a mother I am proud and impressed with what he has learned in such a short time! He is reading level one and 2 books with minimal assistance, he is counting money, he plays chess, knows the planets in order, learned about presidents, counting by 5, 10, and now 2's, learned about Atlantic, pacific and attic oceans, coloring in the lines, spelling words correctly, enforcing virtues and manners, adding and subtracting, counting to 30 in Latin and so many other things! I could not be prouder of the work that has been done to prepare him for first grade! The only thing I think could be better is that the parents are updated a little more on what they are learning every day so we can reinforce at home. My son loves the school, his teacher Mrs Jacobs and Headmaster Agathe!

My kids LOVE going to school. The diverse community is brought together in the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. The classical liberal arts curriculum is inspiring my kids to want to learn. The teachers are amazing educators and role models. We feel blessed to be a part of this school.

Our first grader has had a wonderful experience at Great Hearts Irving and has had nothing but fantastic teachers. First graders learn multiplication & division in Singapore math, memorize over 100 lines of poetry (including the opening lines of Virgil's Aeneid in Latin!), learn ancient, medieval, & modern history, and also learn all of the science topics discussed in _What Your First Grader Needs to Know_ by E.D. Hirsch (including electromagnetic fields, basic human anatomy, ocean systems, habitats, astronomy, etc.). Our first grader has also cultivated beautiful penmanship, thanks to the wonderful Spalding Phonics curriculum (cursive writing is emphasized in second grade) as well as an appreciation for classical music (first graders become familiar with Bach, Beethoven, & Mozart and learn the music alphabet, note rhythms, etc., using the text, _Theory Time_). Great Hearts puts great emphasis on the classical virtues, including the virtue of friendship; the kids are caring and inclusive. Texts are specifically chosen for their emphasis on "the true, the good, and the beautiful," which has made doing reading homework a sweet and whimsical experience for our family. Our first grader was advanced entering Great Hearts but can now read on a 5th grade reading level. (We receive a homework sheet every week). The best part? TWO RECESSES!! (=
