I would recommend the school with the caveat that the best experience will be if you are originally from El Paso or have lived here long-term and your daughter is able to attend all the way from 6th grade through 12th.
The head principal is incredible. She is professional and passionate and sets a great example. She often writes personal notes of encouragement on every students report card. So much is done to meaningfully engage parents!
There are a couple of faculty members who are very similar. They know their content; they know classroom management and differentiation tools for working with different kids learning and motivation needs, and they know to make their students enthusiastic about learning. They also understand the schools Social and Emotional Learning objectives, and they are great at integrating SEL tools into both one-on-one and class conversations to help their students build social and emotional intelligence.
Some of the teachers know their content well while having little to no classroom management skills. These teachers are great IF their students are self-motivated and/or personally connect with the teacher or material well.
Some teachers would be disciplined for lack of professionalism in another school district. It seems like they got degrees without any actual instruction in adolescent development or teaching practices. It has at times seemed like they participate in gossip with students under the guise of social emotional learning discussions; students and other faculty have been the target during these conversations. One teacher has communicated things my student about their objections to school administration, stating that they hoped I would raise concerns, all while making it clear that if their name ever came into the conversation, there would be retaliation. With these faculty members, school rules are also very inconsistent: they will only enforce certain rules with certain students or at certain times. Long -time students are shown favoritism. This does not make YWA unique in the district, as I have had experience with faculty members like this in every EPISD school Ive been involved with.
YWA has amazing potential. As already mentioned, there are some wonderful teachers here and the principal has a vision and the character to bring that vision to life. Its just a young school and based on those problematic faculty members, this school could grow either better or worse.

My sister went here for the 2st semester. Administration is very rude. counselors are not good at communicating with students and make them feel as if their doing something wrong without proper evidence. When you walk around the school children are running around everywhere hanging out with teachers and other staff. It feels like there is no learning going on around here.

My daughter attends since she was in middle school, she is now in high school. The school has a small school feel without the private school cost. The teachers are great, they participate in projects that connect our students to their community. I have seen my daughter transform into a strong, confident leader. There is no way she would have received the same opportunities if she was at a larger school. There is something about the single -gender environment that empowers young women to their full potential.

It is close to impossible to get a schedule of school events with any sort of reasonable notice. For example last year parents were given 1 week notice of student award ceremony and talent show. This year the school chose to deviate from the EPISD calendar for middle school on parent/teacher conferences and didn't notify the parents until it was 10 days away. I finally got notice of a Halloween orchestra concert with 30 days notice but then they changed it from the afternoon to first thing in the morning with only days notice. Despite asking several times for a schedule and then complaining about the lack of schedule/notice the administration has shown little to no interest in resolving the issue.

Overall I find the academic progress thus far less than I had expected. My daughter exceeded grade level in math her last year of elementary school. Her first year at YWA she got approaches grade level on the STARR. What was really disturbing about this was that her grade in math was an A, this raises the question of whether the school is teaching/assigning homework below grade level. Alternatively, it could be that the group work structure & grading was masking my daughters struggle with math.
This is not a parent friendly school for parents who work. They they rarely give any notice of events that would allow you time to notify your employer and take the time off to attend. And perhaps worse, when they do give notice, they frequently change the date/time at the last moment undermining parents ability to attend functions and participate in there child education.

As they emphasize group work it is difficult to tell which students are doing well versus those who might be struggling. Also group work means that parents, often on opposite sides of town may have to coordinate after school hours which can be very challenging and inconvenient.

My daughter attends this school. She loves it. She has become more self confident and outgoing. She has leaned at a deeper level than any previous school.
