The school goes through teachers like children go through clothes and shoes during growth spurts. Everything has a price on it. For mandatory projects, they have paid and free options. Every teacher for the grade goes to the paid project (generally a field trip). Free project students are huddled in a gym to watch movies and build with LEGOs. The communication app is bombarded by give us your money posts (like the Spring Week of Giving to the Annual Teacher Fund) so class-specific communications can be overlooked or missed. If you dont have time for social media or throwing money at everything, you wont enjoy this school.
Q: In my experience, students at this school feel excited about what they're learning.
A: My child hates going to school and constantly asks to stay home. Prior to attending BASIS Austin, my child enjoyed learning and was always asking questions above grade level. Now, they don't ask many questions at all.
Q: In my experience, teachers at this school are respectful, supportive, and motivate their students to learn.
A: I do not want to rate this a 1 as some do these very well; however, tend to leave the school either the same year or the next. Teachers can push students too hard, which is demotivating. Teachers yell at students for forgetting supplies, which is disrespectful and doesn't feel supportive.
Q: In my experience, this school supports students' mental health and emotional well-being.
A: See above. Yelling at children does not support their mental health and emotional well-being. My child doesnt feel safe to speak up in class.
Q: This school provides students with disabilities the support and accommodations they require.
A: I did not answer this question as we do not have a 504 plan; however, when I have advocated for my child, my concerns went unheard.
Q: In my experience, this school provides an environment safe from violence, discrimination, and harsh punishment.
A: Other than teachers yelling at students, the environment is generally safe from violence, discrimination, and harsh punishment. Bullying is dealt with swiftly and rarely recurs.
Q: In my experience, the school welcomes and includes families as partners in their children's learning.
A: I have not found this to be true. The school (teachers) rarely communicate if or when my child is struggling. I have to advocate for my child if I see an issue. The school and staff preach about using a Communication Journal but seldom respond to communications in it.
