You are stupid if you have the opportunity to go to Highland Park and you either do not take it, or take it for granted. Choosing a high school is a black-and-white decision. Highland Park has the best test scores, graduation rates, and matriculation names in Dallas, and completely for free. If you choose a mediocre private school, or even a private school with a great reputation, you are sacrificing a free education that comes with a normal and safe high school experience.
For those who complain of stress, I ask you to deal with the products of your own choices silently. Nobody forced you to take all APs. You will not spontaneously combust if you take a regular class, so please stop scaring people away from Highland Park because you signed up for more than you can handle.
For those who complain of the culture, please think about the real reason you don't fit in. Getting teased a few times is just a part of being in high school. You need to take a look at the fact that there has never been a genuine attack or fight at HP. Nobody is getting beat up for dressing different; you just have never been to a bad high school. Also, racist stuff can happen everywhere, and Highland Park is no exception, but racist attacks are absolutely unheard of at HP. You are unlikely to have any problems as a minority at HP. I also would love to add that the majority of people who complain of a toxic culture of rich white kids are, ironically, rich white kids. To be more specific, rich white kids with a victim complex.
This school is also exceptionally safe. I have never felt unsafe at school, or walking to school. As far as security events, stuff happens every now and then, but never anything major. There was a bomb scare in 2013 and the school and police handled it very well. HP security guards check student id's at each door and require badges for every non-student in the building. If there were to ever be a security emergency, there are always police at school. The UP Police station is 2-3 minutes away, and there are 4 DPD stations within 20 minutes (yes, I checked).

It was a very safe and nice school. Great teachers that care and encourage students to achieve. Like all school students had issues with other students at times but no gang like stuff. Great school overall!!

I strongly wish I had gone to a school that valued curiosity, inquiry, and humanity. Highland park is just a factory churning out more white privileged people from their white privileged parents.

As a former student, I can say that I had two absolutely outstanding teachers who I will remember for the rest of my life. However, most of the teachers were not engaging enough to inspire their students. Many classes were taught in very rote ways, and the bare minimum of content was covered.

As a former biracial student of this school, I can say that the overall culture at this school prizes white, christian, wealthy students and excludes those who do not fit this mold. While there are many amazing students here, the overall culture is a racist, classist one.

The leadership at this school needs to set an example in building an environment where students from all different racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, and religions can thrive. This is clearly not a priority in this community.

I was bullied at this school for being biracial, for being a democrat, and for being an LGBTQ ally.

Top notch school here! Excellent academics, particularly in math and science. Abundant AP offerings and top finishes in academic competitions. Excellent records in athletics. Majority of parents are professionals and well established. Independent-minded, self-directed and competitive do well here. We are very happy with counseling office and college acceptances. Just a fantastic school!

Highland Park HS is incredible academic prepartion. It is intense, but such an improvement over private school- tedious, useless, homework, which we endured for many years. Two professor parents give HP the five star rating. The best teachers, administrators, and all-around truly dedicated faculty and staff at any school in the US.

This school is in a wonderful community however it seems this younger generation in general may need to go back to learn the basics of civility and respect for others. I see younger children still saying the pledge of allegiance in schools and think wow why aren't some of these values still integrated in school for high school students? Young men and women, you are our future. Show us your light and give the world hope. Be good and do good.

Teachers in difficult subjects like science simply don't have the competence to promote interest in students.

The lack of diversity simply makes this an undesirable school system given that many companies are promoting diversity across the country. Having diversity of thought is an important aspect of the culture of a school.

i am a current sophomore at hp and i can tell you that your experience at hphs will be how you make it. yes, we are very non-diverse school with only 5 african american people in our school of about 2000. the pressure at hp can get very very overwhelming. theres is always the pressure to keep up with all the fancy new things people are wearing or buying and the drug and alchohol influence is very high considering about 98% of the highschool's population drinks. If you are a confident person who isnt afraid to be themselves, highland park high school would be a great choice for you. If you are easily influenced and/or have low self assurance i would say hp is not a great choice.

Segregated white high school in a little city separated from the surrounding community by a bubble. Today the school suspended seven books already being read in classes because parents complained the books addressed adult issues. One writer's visit was canceled. The books included The Working Poor; Invisible in America and Song of Solomon, among other establisheand acclaimed works. The thought control may work. The students may grow up to be as closed-minded as their parents.

Nothing will prepare you for the amount of pressure your child will go through. There is a massive amount of homework, that often requires these kids to be up until 1am to finish. The academic sector operates as if there are no sports, and the sport sectors operate as if there is no academcs. We came from a private school environment that focused on teaching course material rather than teaching college exams. My children no longer enjoy school, and my daughter sometimes gets up in the morning throwing up because of the pressure. Yes, the "Bubble" is beautiful, but this school is the example of the pressure cited in the movie "Road to Nowhere."
