Needed to leave a review. We REALLY love the Principal, Teachers, and staff. The team at this school has done an absolute amazing job. Our kiddos have progressed amazingly and love this elementary school. Lots of school activities we felt very much apart of the school community with all the events. I would encourage anyone to attend the school.

With a pandemic going on we would hope that this school would try to do all measures possible to ensure that less people get infected with this virus yet they do not report nor let us parents know of individuals who come back positive who are near our children. My daughters teacher came back positive for the Covid virus and has been out for 2+ weeks and no administration called us to inform us parents of this. However, the principle is leaving us voice-mails and sending out emails stating that all people in close contact with these positive cases WILL be contacted. I left a voice-mail to the school principle 2 days ago, and still have not gotten a call back. Very irresponsible!

The workload is absurd. After being at school from 7:40-3:15 my son then comes home and winds up spending around 2 hours completing homework assignments Monday through Thursday. The assignments are not even beneficial to learning as many of them center around coloring or drawing.

Mrs. Dominguez and Mrs. Mendoza are wonderful teachers. My daughter adores them and she has learned so much in a short amount of time since we moved here. My son likes his teachers okay but often complains that they are not in their classrooms when it is time for the students to return to class so they have to wait in the hall. He says this is because they leave to go out to eat. Not sure on the validity of his claim, but this is what he relays to me.

I have had to speak with the principle a few times about issues my son was repeatedly having with one teacher. While the principle is very nice and gives her full attention and time, she does not seem to be a strong leader. She almost seems afraid to address issues with teachers.

They frequently talk about ways to effectively address bullying with students which is helpful, but many times even if the suggested methods are used bullying still occurs fairly often. I don't fault the school for this as they really give good effort to stop bullying, it is just something that is really hard to control.

Overall, my daughter loves Elfida P. Chavez. She loves her teachers, front office staff, the principle, and Samantha in the front is one of her favorite people. She goes above and beyond to make new students feel welcome and I do not think I have ever seen her not smiling. My son says it is not the worst school he has attended, but not the best. He says the students in his classrooms act up all the time and don't get caught or in trouble, but if they do get caught then the whole class gets in trouble even those not involved. Social studies is lacking as he says they hand out a worksheet that you read and fill out making it pretty much a self-taught class. Language Arts and Reading assignments place more focus on art than the subject being taught. He has actually learned quite a bit in math and science and the teachers who instruct those subjects seem to have a teaching method that works for his learning style.
I loathe the lack of parking and the drop off/pick up area. It is poorly organized, the cross guards are whistle happy and will yell at/reprimand you like a child if you mistakenly do something incorrect like allow your child to exit the car onto the sidewalk. I have gotten to the point that I just tell the kids to meet me on a nearby neighborhood street and I pick them up there to avoid the chaos. The dances and events are also poorly organized. My daughter and husband attended the father/daughter dance and there were no clear signs to signify where to enter the building so they were out in the rain for 10 minutes until they found the right door. Field day would be great if they would allow parents to be involved. This is the first school we have been to where we were not allowed to come watch our kids participate in field day. The last thing I will mention is the poor communication on informing parents about school activities, events, picture day. I always get papers 2-3 days before something is to happen so I have no time to prepare, schedule, or purchase needed items.

My daughters were transferred from Helen Ball Elementary and it was the best move! The school academic programs are great, both of my daughters improved in all areas. Very safe and the only problem I see is just the traffic congestion in the morning and afternoon. But is worth it! Thanks Elfida P Chavez!
