Shelton's impact can be seen in the success of its students. The school's 2026 valedictorian, who started at Shelton in second grade, will attend Stanford University this fall. In her graduation speech, she said that while Shelton provided academic support and understanding teachers, what meant the most to her was acceptance. She credited Shelton with helping her accept herself and find a community that accepted her as well. That combination of academic excellence, confidence-building and belonging is what makes Shelton such a special place.

I have seen a lot of mixed reviews from people saying its good to people saying its bad. I am a current student at Shelton. The learning is ok but it feels you have to take honors classes to get the minimum curricular level other schools offer. The teaching at Shelton varies. Some teachers are more strict on the rule which they should and others not so much. There are a handful I can name but I wont that are very nice and passionate about their job and help when you need just shoot them and email. I personally have had no issues with some but they do pick favorites but it is very minor. If I was a teacher and there was a trouble maker and a very nice well organized student I would treat the other one with more respect. I feel like we should as Shelton students try to get on the teachers good side. The emotional support at Shelton is amazing in middle school as u an new to highshool and havent needed counseling I would understand if it is not as good. Shelton is very good about their special needs help I would say the only thing people are struggling to figure out is that you need to ASK for help when you need it as most teachers are understanding. Finally the safety, safety at Shelton is great with security and what not.
, but it has a major bullying issues as I have been a victim and learned to take it others may not . I will not point out any names but A student spreads rumors about B student and they are now a reject not liked unless you find your group. I had a relationship and it ended because of things like this. Family engagement is the same way. They have talks with you teachers and parents but almost never take action unless it is serious. Someone has been bullying you for a month? Well talk to them. It stops for around a week then starts all over again making you think why do I keep doing this if they never take action? In result Shelton needs to make big changes and take action on bullying other then that this schooo is and alright but behind one for students.

My daughter attended Shelton for 2 years and needed counseling to recover from her negative experience. There are bullies, incompetent and socially challenged teachers, police dogs sniffing for drugs, and unfair treatment by the administration. It feels more like a prison or treatment facility for mental health issues than a school. In the upper school there is a big drug problem and kids are unjustly accused of drug use or possession. Curriculum is too easy so nearly everyone is an A student but not ready for the rigors of college. Many of the students misbehave in class and teachers are ill prepared to manage their behaviors. There is blatant favoritism toward donors. The administration ignores requests for meetings or help of any kind. The culture is demoralizing. My student used to beg us to transfer and left with a sour taste in her mouth toward school.

Our son started at Shelton in fourth grade after he was diagnosed with dyslexia. He thrived at Shelton, where he received the school's unique multisensory and discovery learning methods. He graduated from Shelton in 2017 after receiving an excellent education and playing football, soccer and trumpet in the band. Since then he graduated from Oklahoma State University with degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He then went on to receive a master's degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. We are grateful to Shelton for empowering him to embrace his learning difference and providing him with the tools he needed to succeed!

My son got a high A in algebra his freshman year. Was told he did great and mastered the material. Then he got a 16 on PreACT math subtest and we had him assessed by an independent consultant. Discovered that hed learned practically nothing at Shelton. He had to retake algebra in the summer. The teacher was subsequently fired, but that was our Shelton experience in many classes at the high school level. Material is watered down and report cards look stellar.

As a parent of five kids we've had our kids enrolled in a total of 11 different schools between preschool and high school. Shelton without question would be the last if we were to rank our experiences. They have a reputation as a leader in LDs yet they treat the kids as if they don't know the issues that surface with any given diagnosis. Many of the teachers have minimal training and the admin is completely disengaged and have no clue what goes on. All they do is police students and hand out infractions for minor discipline problems. Their response to graffiti was to remove stall wall dividers in the bathrooms. So now innocent kids who had nothing to do with the violation are forced to go the bathroom without privacy. They praise your kid during conferences and generously give out A's but then the ACTS roll around and the truth comes out. Your kid learns a fraction of what they should know for their grade in school. They have a big drug problem in the upper school and randomly test the wrong kids to say they are doing something about the problem. If you donate to the school it shield your kid from "random" testing. I wouldn't recommend this school for anything but maybe preschool through grade 5. After that you're killing time and kidding yourself that you're making a good parenting decision on your kid's behalf.

Shelton is a big fat joke of a school once you go beyond the lower grades. We were happy with the education my son got until 7th. Beyond that, they water down the curriculum and 70% of the class is a scholar by high school. The administration is horrible. High school is the worst. They have obvious favorites and other families are ignored. They dont return calls or make good on promises. They have a big problem with drugs and bullying there. Suspensions are the way they deal with any problem that comes up. Caught using drugs? Suspended but not expelled. Arrive late to class? Suspension not detention. They teach to the lowest denominator and everyone loses after graduation. These kids cant handle a real college because they have no concept of homework. Read the reviews carefully before you enroll. There are common themes that come up and they are accurate!

Talking to my kiddo, I asked, do you want to try a different school for high school, she says to me, mom I want to graduate from Shelton, I don't want to go anywhere else. Happy kid, happy mom and dad, happy family! We love Shelton!

We moved here from out of state to attend Shelton. My child felt welcomed immediately and we have been informed by teachers on a regular basis of his progress. There are many opportunities for both students and parents to participate and connect as a community.
Our childs test scores have improved even though standardized tests are not his thing.

We moved across the country to send our child to this school and have no regrets. The teachers are wonderful and effective in presenting material in ways that allow students to learn, free of the sort of busywork so many other schools assign. The arts programs are fantastic. The new campus is beautiful. This school reminds me much more of the private college prep school I attended in Texas in the 1980s than any school our children have ever gone to. Many graduates are accepted to fantastic colleges, as was our child. think every school has something to learn from Shelton

As a Shelton Alumni, I knew Shelton provided a superior education. So when we found out our 3 boys were dyslexic we enrolled them in Shelton. Our oldest is in 7th and our twins are in 4th grade. They are all reading, and their self-confidence has been restored. Our boys are all learning to self-advocate and use assistive technology. We plan to have them stay through high school because we know Shelton will prepare them to succeed in school and in life!

Upper Elementary and Middle School were incapable of helping student with moderate to severe dyslexia despite assurances from staff. Student's scores on standardized tests continued to decline while staff gave "A" grades. Finally pulled student from Shelton and moved to a different LD school. A year later, the progress at the new school was obvious.

My son went here for six years before we could no longer financially afford Shelton. The last year he was enrolled at the school, he tested two grade levels below where he was currently. Needless to say we were apprehensive to place him in public school (not DISD) but we financially had to choice. I can report it was the BEST move we could have made! My son is now on grade level, passed the STAR test and was on the A and B honor role his last semester. In addtion, having him away from Shelton allowed my son to mature socially. He is much more confident with himself in his daily life. Everything works out for a reason, I just wish we made the choice of leaving Shelton sooner.

Shelton is the best school in the country for kids with learning differences, and it changed my life. From the teachers and staff, the leadership and parent involvement it doesn't get any better than the Shelton School. If my kids end up having learning differences, I will send them to Shelton immediately because I know it will change their life for the better as well.

Horrible. Leadership plays it up like it's a great school for kids with learning differences but all they care about is money, making false promises, saying one thing and doing something else. The leadership at the school is clueless. We moved our kids out and I have to say it was the best thing we ever did. What a big mistake.

This is for lower school, my son has been attending Shelton for over two years. He is ADHD, dyslexic and dysgraphia. Before Shelton he was not reading or writing, had very low self esteem and couldn't get his work finished. Now he is reading, writing in cursive and self esteem is building. This school is a wonderful place and I couldn't be happier with it.

The fundraising is crazy. My child was at the top of her class yet tested 2 years below. She was at Shelton for four years.

The administration is not what it seems. They dont support families or communicate honestly. The office administrator even suggests that children go on medication, which I believe is illegal. They dont support when bullying is going on. They dont support when drugs are being used by older students. They are your best friend for fund raising. There are other schools we have found with less of an agenda. The teachers dont have much of a personality but are great for learning differences.
Posted: January 21, 2017
At first they do not seem as warm as teachers I have had experience with at other schools via our other child. Within a few weeks however I will meet teachers at carpool whom I have never met but know my child by name. They might be a speech, drama or handwriting teacher, yet they know everything about her. This has been very surprising, I do expect teachers to know my child but the teachers at Shelton seem to know them on a more profound level. Perhaps it is their extensive behavioral training which conditions them to be so attentive. They are extremely responsive to our needs or questions and most of all, our daughter loves them all.
Posted: January 21, 2017
Homework in the LS supports what is taught in class. They give the children homework which is a half-peg below the level they work on in class. This promotes a positive experience at home, our child takes out her homework and is able to do it and return it. This doesn't mean it's a breeze, she has ADHD and keeping her on-task takes effort on both of our parts, but the content of the homework is not stumbled upon. This allows us to focus on organizational skills and task-completion, a meta-level skill which is more important than the minutia of the work itself.

My child has been at this school for 2 years now - this review is for the lower school. She has ADHD and struggles with task completion, language skills and impulse control. Shelton has been instrumental in helping her learn to read and do well in math, the classes are small and the teachers are very caring. The kids in class are kind to one another but due to their varying difference, they sometimes do or say things which might be hurtful. I have seen this happen on a couple of occasions (one pushed the other and during another incident, a child said something inappropriate) and the teachers/administration addressed it immediately and impeccably.
I personally reached out to the administration for help in evaluating my child again and it was done within the week. They are incredibly sensitive and responsive to our kids' needs, and not because we are connected or popular in any way - as has been stated in another review.
Given the nature of the various differences at this school they are doing a stellar job, our child feels included, strong, able and cared for.

They are always willing to help in every way they can. As long as you go and show them that you want to succeed they will do everything in their means to help you.
Posted: August 24, 2016
It is not an over whelming amount, but it is just enough to make sure you understand the material given in class.
Posted: August 24, 2016
Students are very rude. They are not welcoming. They do a lot of drugs and the drug testing doesn't make them stop.
Posted: August 24, 2016
Most of the teacher are amazing and are willing to help in any way they can. Administration is what makes the school so terrible. They don't take care of problems or harassment issues. The curriculum for high school is very misleading too.

In response to one of the earlier comments ... I would never, ever consider sending my child to a school that made a comment that my child needed to go to school with "normal" kids before accepting him .... that is crazy. My kid transitioned to Highland Park High School from Shelton, It might not be private but it is considered one of the top public schools in Texas and in the country. My very normal child is excelling academically and socially ... making some of the most competitive teams at the school and performing with 3.5 GPA. I would love to know what private school that is because I would happily march my very normal, beautiful and accomplished daughter in and prove them wrong about their ludicrous comment.
Posted: April 18, 2014
My friends son goes to this school. He is entering 9th grade next year so she wanted to transfer him into a regular private school. He was denied and told that he needs to show that he can learn among "normal" kids for at least 2 years in a regular school curriculum before he would be accepted. Heads up!

[shelton] shelton is not the best school like people say i go here and let me say i do not enjoy it. Its not the environment you would want your child in. I would suggest you look for other learning different schools.

I was a shelton student from 5th grade to 7th grade. Of course there are some mean kids but there are everywhere. I made some of my best friends at shelton, and i still cherish my memories. I switched in 8th grade for more of a challenge but to this day, i still regret it. What i love most about shelton is the way they teach, the community that shelton has, and the shorter classes(50 min) Shelton changed my life. --Student
