Huntington-Surrey is a gem of a school - intentionally small and student focused, students who might get lost in the shuffle of public school or larger private schools are seen here and the community is affirming and kind. Our experience of 4 years (graduating in May) has been exceptional. Note that H-S is not a school designed especially for the gifted or for those with learning differences or disabilities but students from these populations are served well here because of the school's focus on its mission - recognizing that education is never a one-size-fits-all endeavor. It is not a therapy school but reasonable accommodations are met and handled well with the student, family and school working together as a team. And your student will be challenged with academic rigor, engaging material, and college preparation with heart!

The mission is appealing & they talk a good game, but follow-through is nonexistent. They claim expertise but don't follow current best practices & refuse to adapt or engage in meaningful professional development. They seem to be resting on the laurels of previous administrations. If your child has learning differences, ADHD, or is neurodiverse: be very skeptical. Get any accommodation offers or support plans in writing - otherwise they won't materialize. We learned the hard way after months & months of unfulfilled promises. The SEL component is nonexistent. No community-building efforts. Your child either fits their narrow mold or is deemed a problem. We learned too late why this school is so small & has such high turnover. Parents often choose schools like this seeking something different than large institutions. This school is not it. You'll get all the problems of a big school with none of the resources. Look elsewhere for an environment that actually supports diverse learners.

My teen enrolled here this school year, and we'll be enrolling another child next year. He was at a brick-and-mortar middle school where AI was the sole academic teacher. The difference between learning from in-person teachers and AI is tremendous. Relational learning became necessary as a high schooler. My teen said he is 'deep learning' here, rather than the multiple-choice learning with the AI. Most classes are laptop-free (therefore, less distraction), and most work is completed in class, minimizing homework.
We're also noticing that my child has become less anxious and gentler. This is a calm learning environment. Yoga is one of the electives offered here, already helping him with postures. Sign language is another elective they offer.
As a parent, I am grateful my child is learning more than to score on standardized tests. He is actually getting food for thought and maturing through reading excellent literature and discussions, and gentle relationships within the school. We're noticing in him the true joy in learning.
Students here seem non-judgmental and embrace diversity. On Fridays, they have social/club meetings, a highlight of his week!

Huntington-Surrey has been an amazing school for our son. It a place where kids can thrive on learning, not just survive high school. The college format prepares them for what is ahead, and teachers...amazing, all have either Masters or PHD and drive their students to achieve. It doesn't have athletics, but that was not an issue since my son as he is more of a martial arts enthusiast.This is a perfect school for a smart kid who needs that core attention to challenge them in a positive way, whether a home-school kid or just one who is drowning in the over-large public high school. So glad we found it!!!

I can't honestly speak about the current staff because it has been 10+ years for me... however the ones I did know we're absolutely incredible!

what homework?? I was able to complete all of my work other than researth assignments in study hall... which was great because I started working early at 15 and held many jobs during that time and still went through HS with honors

Neverfelt that one student had a better connection to a teacher than any other. Teachers never lied nor tricked students into doing anything and as far as fairness... sure we may have hated the rules but they were all completely justified

Former student graduated as "the platinum kid" as they called me... I ended up having to do a half year as a junior due to personal reasons so I technically went to HSBC for 5 years... so that's what they dubbed me... This school felt like my second home... I actually enjoyed going to svhool, doing the work, testing my own limitations and thinking outside the box... The staff at that time was amazing! While we did have our fair share of teacher switching since they moved on to bigger and better things... I never came across any teacher that I disliked nor one that wouldn't work with me if I was struggling... I learn so much in my time there and it was an experience I would never take back. If any of the staff reads this they may remember me from that platinum kid joke... I love all you guys and I look forward to seeing you guys again soon! I love popping in!

I graduated from Huntington-Surrey in 1999. It was my third high school. Before enrolling, I was on a path to becoming a drop out. I loved learning, but hated school. Huntington-Surrey made me into a lifelong learner. I graduated from St. Edward's with Honors, received an MFA from Naropa University and an MA from University of Chicago. I am now an English teacher and one of my biggest dreams in life is to someday run and teach in a school based on the principles of Huntington-Surrey methods.

Huntington-Surrey has very small class sizes in a setting that allows teachers to individualize each student s learning. Students who struggle with the distractions of most school settings thrive because the small classrooms and content competent teachers encourage the student to be prepared for class and engage in learning. A student who has never read an entire book before is enticed with interest-specific literature that is discussed and written about in one-on-one English tutorial style literature class. The most important thing that happens at Huntington-Surrey is learning. The culture of Huntington-Surrey allows students to know their teachers on a first-name basis and everyone is accepted as individuals. No bullying, no intimidation, no time to waste- just learning. This school has been tremendous for my daughter. The school sets high expectations of the kids, and then provides the support and one-on-one attention necessary for the kids to reach those expectations. The closeness between the students and the teachers is amazing. It really creates a drive in the students to succeed. This school is wonderful.
