We have a deaf/autistic child who is high functioning. The school said they dont want to focus on his reading but want to get his communication up. Thats all well and good but he needs to learn how to read to get a job, and to text and read street signs. Then there is the lack of communication the school has with the parents. Needs a lot of improvement.

My stepson is 12, and he is highly functioning autistic. His teachers have not communicated with his family at all about learning to read. It is extremely disgraceful and heartbreaking. They have labeled him a special ed kid, and told us he is not capable of reading. They base this on faulty information, including saying he cannot recognize or write his own name. He does this frequently at home! Their communication with parents is awful! They sent home a letter in February 2026. It said the date was December 15. Their transportation dept is maddening to work with.

Texas School for the Deaf is the best of the BEST!

There are many ways I appreciate having my children at Texas School for the Deaf. I appreciate the fact that TSD follows bilingual philosophy (ASL and written English) and that my children can speak ASL with their teachers and their classmates. My children get 100% visual access to their education, in their language.

The school has a good teacher to student ratio, however, at least in the elementary school too many of the teachers do not currently meet the standards for TX and the No Child Left Behind law. The teachers are given three years to meet the standards. This may be good for the teachers, but it does not help the students. Also recently there was a serious situation involving the police at the school, and the communication with parents was sorely lacking. We found out about the situation via Facebook when it was posted on a news Facebook wall. That should never have happened. One other concern is that the children are not held to high standards. Even in the upper elementary grades a student can earn a 100 as a grade just for trying, but that's not how life works. Our children in the public schools must earn their grades; they are not given grades based solely on the fact that they tried. I would like to see the children at this school held to the same standards as children in the AISD schools.

The elementary school has had issues with bullying. They have started a character education group for at least some of the elementary students. I hope this will be a positive change for the school and students. The leadership at the school needs to keep moving the school in a forward direction instead of hanging on to how things were done in the past.

Hello! Texas School for the Deaf is amazing! The teacher is wonderful. My daughter is behind due to Michigan School for the Deaf didn't bother to teach her and worse of all, she was in the dorm so I couldn't help her. Now TSD is helping her and working very hard to get her to catch up before we know it, she will make it just fine all because of TSD. The TSD staffs are wonderful and very positive. They are like family. I have other daughter is in middle school. They protected her even though she did not report, but other students saw the bullies picking on my girl so they reported it and amazing staffs took care of it right away. I am so blessed with this school. They have strong school leaderships, excellent teachers, principal, and challenging academic programs. I am so wowwed by this!
