Quality of the curriculum is fantastic. My son took off a year in person and attended UTHS for his junior year for 2024-2025. It came at a time where he needed this kind of environment the most, and now we're going back to in person for his senior year only because of the social aspect.

His teachers were all incredibly supportive, but his case manager was especially fantastic. She was so supportive of him, was always there for 1:1 support. Really cannot say enough about what this place did for my son - I think he learned more in this one year than he did in two years combined at in person school.

I have been teaching for over 25 years in the public school system and I am disappointed that I did not check the reviews before enrolling my children in an independent course at UTHS. I dismissed other teacher's negative comments and warnings about what a terrible school UTHS was because I thought their students couldn't handle a challenge. (Also I graduated from UT Austin and wanted to believe it was a good school). My oldest who took algebra 2 honors so he could begin his sophmore year in precal finished the course and we are still waiting for his tests to be graded. He has had 3 different teachers grading his other assignments - Geometry teachers and have showed no consistency in their feedback. One took 10 points off a 'learning log' because she felt like he didn't provide enough evidence. He did. I want to include this child attended a private school for gifted children and scored in the top 1% in math. This is beyond me being a disgruntled parent who feels their child didn't get pampered- this is me- a disgusted public school teacher who knows having three different teachers in less than a month is questionable.
Now onto my second child who struggles with math. I have given up my summer to help him- I have relearned Algebra and went through the course from a student's perpective. That was when it sunk in UTHS is a joke. My son took his first exam and his exam was rejected because he didn't follow proper protocols. (You have to film your work area, show paper, clear your calculator). He was allowed a second chance. This time I had him take the exam at my mother's house so I could watch through her glass doors to make sure he set up correctly before the exam. He followed the protocol and shortly after received another e-mail stating his exam was rejected because he did not follow protocol. They sent two pictures- one of his face and one of his calculator. I asked for the video and was told they could only send stills of him. I asked for them. They sent pictures of his face taking the test and was told he would receive a zero. I will happily forward the emails to anyone who would like to read the exchange between me and the AP. I realized his limited teaching experience was partially to blame. If you want teachers tired of dealing with behavior problems so opted to hide behind a computer with administration with little expertise in hands on education= this is your place. Interesting the number of actual teachers that rated this school so low.

I've never seen a school with this level of trashy communication. You reach out to the teachers and they won't even look at it. No help is given when asked, yet they expect you to navigate everything by themselves. The assignments have nothing to do with the exams/quizzes. Youtube taught me more than UTHS.

This review is for a student enrolled part-time taking one course, AP Precalculus, so I cannot speak for the full-time experience. I have a master's degree in education and tried to help my kid plan out how they would complete the course (i.e., the time they had to complete each assignment, etc.). First, of all, the system never sends you anything that tells you when your course expires; you have to figure that out yourself (and it is based on your ENROLLMENT date, not your start date). Second, the assignments don't indicate how much time each should take, so it is next to impossible to know how much time you should spend on each unit (one of the instructions for completing each lesson is, "Do a few of the problems at the end of the chapter." Unfortunately, there are multiple sections of questions of multiple types, so doing the first few questions isn't going to prepare you for quizzes, etc.). Third, you cannot access later lessons until you complete the earlier lessons, so you cannot see how many pages of the text each unit covers in order to make a course completion plan. Fourth, the system goes down unpredictably, so you cannot plan when you will complete assignments because if the system is down during your planned work time, you can't get any work done. In the end, my kid contacted the Help Desk saying their course wasn't working, they said the system was down and to wait. They waited and waited, only to find out their course had actually expired! Had customer service actually told them the course was expired, we could have paid for the extension so they could finish the course before school started. Fifth, you'll need to make screenshots of your course progress page as you go along, because you won't have access to it AT ALL once the course expires, and Customer Service won't print it out for you (they will only give you a print out of graded assignments, not all the ungraded work and quizzes you complete before you actually have a graded assignment). A simple query could be set up on UT's side to alleviate all of these problems and make the courses MUCH more accessible for the at-home learner to make a plan to complete the course, Instead, the one-off courses appear to just be a money grab for UT.

This has been the best decision we've made for our son. After many academic challenges in his previous private school, where the model didn't suit him, it was difficult to consider an online option.

As someone with a PhD in Education, we sought a school with rigorous academic standards and personalized attention. UTHS offers a prestigious name, a relevant curriculum, and a skilled team of educators. Dr. Diehl, the director, and his team were always responsive, allowing for daily monitoring of academic progress if desired.

Our son thrived. His grades and mood improved significantly. He achieved top results in the standardized state exams (STAAR). Learning made him happy, which made us happy parents. Very grateful with UTHS.

I joined UT last year and I truly believe that UT is the best school I have ever had the privilege of learning in.

One of the reasons I feel this way is because of the exceptional teachers at UT. They are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly welcoming. I have always felt comfortable reaching out to them, and they respond to my emails promptly. Their willingness to help, even in challenging times like failing an exam or a graded quiz, is truly commendable (I once scored 60/100 in my graded quiz, and my instructor gave me an example of doing corrections that make students' failing grades up to 70; on the example page, he wrote his name with a grade of 50.). They always find a polite and supportive way to guide me towards the right path, helping me to grow academically.

Moreover, the counselors at UT are also polite and helpful. Whenever I have sought their guidance, they have provided me with valuable insights and assistance. Their professionalism and willingness to go the extra mile are greatly appreciated.

However, I must admit that there are a couple of areas where I feel improvements can be made. Firstly, the testing process can sometimes be hindered by technical issues with Proctorio. There have been instances where I have been unexpectedly logged out of an exam, which caused me to feel panicked and impacted my performance. Finding a more reliable solution or addressing these technical glitches could greatly alleviate this issue.

Additionally, I have encountered challenges when dealing with the administrations at UT. It seems that they often adhere to their own understanding without fully considering the students' perspective. It would be beneficial if they were more open to feedback and willing to rectify situations where they may have made errors.

The instruction materials don't match up well with the homework assignments, but worse, the assignments and quizzes and even the final review DO NOT reflect what's on the final exam--at.all. The final is full of paragraph-long questions and answers. In addition, the policy of requiring a 70 on the final exam, regardless of your overall grade in the class, would be illegal. I've never seen this done in Texas. My child has a 78 in the class, which is about right for her with math; she scored a 68 on the final and therefore failed the class. Seriously? We have option to retake ONCE and if that doesn't earn a 70, we're out of luck for the whole thing. Criminal. Should've known--UT. Try Texas Tech.

The staff does not respond on a timely basis and as an educator myself, it is highly unprofessional. My daughter struggled the entire time getting responses to questions or guidance from the teachers and staff. Questions about her 504 plan were ignored and not validated.

My son loved this school. You need to be self-disciplined to complete the courses. He was able to work at his own pace and the level of rigor was much higher than the public school we attended previously. The counselors were very helpful.

My daughter was in a severe accident and needed an extension on time for coursework, in their UT High School Diploma program, the Superintendent and the principals BOTH did NOT allow an extension of completing her assignments even with a surgeons request for extension based on serious injuries to her wrist, neck and back. We only needed an 8 day extension for my daughter and we were denied even with the doctor's request. Now, my daughter will get all F's as a result of them not allowing her to complete 6 assignments in each class. This is unacceptable also because she is on a 504 Plan which LEGALLY allows for extension of her work. I do NOT recommend this school whatsoever. I'm battling with these horrible, unsympathetic principals daily and they still locked her out of the coursework and pushed her into all F's.

For having the UT name this program is poorly operated and designed. Good luck getting ahold of anyone ever. They see their instructors 1 day a week for an hour and then are expected to know everything. They need to remember that these are high school kids, they are preparing for college and they aren't college students. I looked at some of the assignments and the teachers questions on tests are so vague and really didn't specify the information they are wanting in the answer. I withdrew my son and I'm STILL waiting for my son's transcripts so he can start a local school a week later!

For the cost, this school has been absolutely underwhelming every step of the way. The UT name drew us in, but then the luster wore off quickly. The classes and class schedules are poorly designed, especially for kids that are not great at structuring their own weekly schedule to stay on pace (how many really are?). Just like any school, the teachers observable commitment to individual students varies from class to class. In short, I expected s much more from the UT brand but have been gravely disappointed with the school in it's entirety. I would not recommend this school to anybody for free, let alone at it's current cost. =(

Nothing in the introduction to the algebra course told me I couldn't use a cas calculator to take the course. only at the end of the course in a section I couldn't interact with or learn about until I had already finished the entire course up to the final exam that I wasn't allowed to use cas calculators and forced me to essentially relearn the entire course in a different format with a different calculator. After learning that I had been lied to I spent the week trying to contact the school to confirm I couldn't use my calculator only to be told by the very teacher who should know her own class resources and requirements to ask the front desk. I contacted the front desk and did not receive an answer for days. in full, the explanations and videos explaining topics were confusing and misleading and were more concerned with making bad and corny jokes than teaching, the actual teacher presence is nonexistent and if they replaced them all with bots to say "contact the front desk" then I would never know the difference, and if you are thinking of enrolling in this school, I beg you for your child's sake DO NOT SIGN UP AT THIS SCHOOL.

Awful experience. Exams take forever to get graded and you cannot get credit unless you earn a 70% on the final...even if you have an A in the class. The class does not prepare you for the final. The teaching methods are archaic and ineffective. Save your money. Go somewhere else.

Literally do not take AP Calculus at this school. The "learning" videos show you absolutely none of the process and instead just tell you what to do. As someone who completely follows the process from my notes when doing a test, I've failed way more tests than I've passed. (Also keep in mind, prior to transferring to this school and taking calculus, my math grades NEVER dropped below a 92%... I'm good at math) The school doesn't tell you how anything relates and doesn't show you how to take what you know and apply it elsewhere. It's all a guessing game. I've learned more from Khan Academy this year than my actual school...

Other than Calculus, the rest of the school is fine. Communication with teachers sucks and the system they have for finals is dumb (regardless of the grade you have in the class, if you get less than a 70% on the final, you automatically fail the class) But I haven't had any major issues other than Calculus

I do not recommend this school. Communication between students and teachers minimal. Communication between counselors and students/ teachers minimal. They do not answer you back for days. Work is 75% of semester grade and final exam is 25% but must pass the final exam with a 70 or above to pass the course. Courses very strict and kids teach themselves basically. Very few electives to choose from. Very old school mentality, education wise.

We went to this school because my son is accelerated and wanted to move at his own pace, but we also wanted an official high school transcript rather than a homeschool one to help with college admissions. We were also super relieved that we would have a high school counselor to make sure we were taking all the right steps to get him into college. Unfortunately the counselor gave us consistently bad and misleading advice, and overall no matter how many times we reached out to the counselor and administration, they never really seemed to take us seriously. As a result, the benefit of the actual transcript seems negligible and their advice actually hurt him more than it helped. I would say if you want to take relatively cheap, online classes without real teacher or school support, this is the place for you. If you want anything more out of your academic experience, don't trust their spiel -- you're 100% better off elsewhere.

I went to this school for the self paced (I started in 2017, but now in the 12th grade), and nice thing to say, it is pretty effective, but with too less AP classes, and plus, the lack of college prep and the lack of foreign language makes me worried that I might not get into the best college. Also, watch out for the GPA policy, because lose 1 percent, then you will lose 0.1 GPA points. It is not fair and that was what got me only into a state university (UC Davis) and not Harvard or MIT even though I got all A and a 1560 SAT, the policy is so stringent. Also, I took the remaining AP classes not offered at UT High School at UC Scout.

Though the whole course (semester) could be done in 5 weeks or less with 1 1/2 hours per day of effort, there is not much homework and only 15-20 graded assignments per course. The graded assignments only have around 10 questions, so if you get a mistake, you end up losing 10 points.

Definitely not at all. When skyward was released, they changed their system from being a self paced flexible school to being a semester based high school, just like regular schools, albeit not preparing you for college. I am so scared that I might only go to community college because of their GPA policy, and plus, the low college preparation. Also, if you finish the semester with all the finals being posted, you have to wait until the end date to start the next semester. Kind of a waste of time if you want to go on a fast pace.

Terrible experience. Their administration is especially terrible- unhelpful, slow and if you live outside of the US good luck ever getting the papers to your proctor. My experience with teachers are not that bad, but the 1 that was unhelpful seemed like she was going out of the way to be unhelpful.

They assigned me courses to do in my personal graduation plan which were too easy and almost completely not applicable to the path I wanted to go in. They knew this and did not answer my emails and even when I called they would constantly postpone. They only responded when I refused to pay and cancelled my card.

Speaking of which, they make you write down your card number and everything and you email it to them and someone manually takes it down into their system. They have no online payment options and it is really unsafe for them to keep personal credit card numbers in their emails.

I did not think UT was bad until I went to another online school concurrently (APEX Learning) and they were so much more efficient and actually teach properly.

My son would contact his teacher and it would take 4-5 days to get a response. Not good when you are put on a deadline. When he asked if he could skype the teacher so he could work one on one with her, he was told that was not part of the program.

In late August 2019, UTHS named a new principal who came in and did a complete overhaul of their diploma program. My child enrolled at UTHS because we needed a flexible program to work around her demanding ballet schedule. The UTHS website describes their program as one that "provides the flexibility for students to earn their diploma in a way that meets their personal needs." My child's first year of high school was completed seamlessly since their program allowed one to start a course at any time so long as it is completed in 150 days. We enrolled in four courses to start the year and then added another course as one was finished so we had no more than four courses at a time. This is exactly what she needed to balance school and her rigorous ballet training.

Enter the new principal who instituted a complete 180, establishing a strict semester system that had specific start and end dates, effectively negating their "start anytime" selling point. Students are now required to be enrolled in seven-eight courses at the same time at the start of each semester and must finish all of them by the start of the second semester. Students are no longer given the option to manage their workload to fit their needs as it transitioned into a traditional school model, albeit online.

This change was made with less than two weeks notice before the start of their "school year". Several phone calls and emails to administration were unproductive. If you are looking for a flexible diploma program that you can adjust to meet the needs of your student, this program is NOT for you. UTHS at this point is a traditional public school done online.

If I could give the new principal a zero, I would. Implementing this change with such short notice did not allow parents the time to research other options. We are stuck with their system this semester but have already made plans to withdraw as soon as my child completes their designated seven courses. We will be enrolling at Mizzou which offers the flexible program UTHS offered less than a month ago. Administration has been impossible to work with and has not offered any solutions other than to withdraw my child from the program. I will venture to say that we will not be alone in abandoning this program for one that has the flexibility that online schooling was meant to provide.

I tried to register. The registration form asks for a uteid in order to register. I used the form to request a ut eid. At the end it says I will receive a it eid 3 days after registering??? I emailed for help because I must be missing something. The counselor had no idea what to do. She said someone would call me. A week later after many messages and emails still no answer. If this is how hard it is to get help with a simple registration issue I cant imagine what the school experience is like. No thanks!!

Our son had an A average in all classes until he started UTHS. He had an A on all homework / quizzes and he did not pass world history or chemistry.

All of our communication was through the vice-principal of UTHS because I could never get an answer from the school counselor.

Many times we contacted teachers on problems with questions in the quizzes that were not accurate. PLEASE. Do not waste your money.

This school is an embarrassment. How is it possible to have a 97% class average going into the algebra 1 final exam then get a 55% on the final? My daughter told me the final exam problems contained tons of terminology she'd never seen before. Despite their assurances, I suspected they gave her the wrong exam so I asked to look at the exam myself. They refused since they didn't want the final exam made public. I offered to drive all the way to Austin to view the test in their offices and they again refused. They also said they couldn't tell me the test average score on their final because "we never calculate that." That's incompetence.

I homeschooled my daughter on algebra 1 for a full year before enrolling in Algebra 1 online so she was very well prepared for this course. However the homework for this class was very easy and the workload very light. Unfortunately the assigned homework problems have no relation whatsoever to the problems that appeared on the final exam.

I constantly had to contact the class teacher since example problems students were given were incorrect. Doesn't the online teacher or curriculum personnel even bother to look at the lecture material they are giving? This is absolutely embarrassing. Also several homework assignments were misgraded.

Overall the classes were easy to navigate and the teachers graded the non auto graded assignments in a timely manner. I saw some negative comments about proctored exams on this site. They were completely upfront about proctoring and the counselor, Ms York answered all our questions before he started. She was very open to answering all our questions and was supportive throughout the process. The proctoring for people not living near Austin can be frustrating. After the first couple of times though it was easier to coordinate. Most of the exams were online so the proctor had to install some software or something on the computer to make sure he only accessed the test. Make sure whoever you get approved (if a non testing center) is comfortable with computers. For the mailed exams, you need to allow plenty of time for transit. The school was upfront about that, but we paid for Fed Ex shipment to help expedite the process. Each one was processed by someone different (or it felt like it), so we made sure to be very specific on the form and even had the proctor call a couple of times to make sure the test got to her. Overall the curriculum appeared rigorous enough that he was engaged and learned quite a bit. If your child is not disciplined, planning the work load could be a problem. They have a phone app, so I downloaded it on my phone. I was able to log in and see if he was making progress. Honestly I didnt need to do this, but it made me feel better that I could look. I could see this being a plus if you wanted to see what they had learned and reinforce the concepts by talking about it with your child or asking them questions. He did say some teachers really didnt provide much feedback and others were exceptional. His math teacher would send him videos of things he missed that really aided in his learning.

From what our son said, there is no group discussion or interaction with other students. I could see this as being good if your child was bullied previously. You will want to make sure there are other opportunities for socialization if your child only attends school with UTHS. Overall it has been a good experience for our son and we would recommend the school.

I am a student at UT High School, and I love it so much. All classes can be done at your own pace, and the teachers are very helpful. Some people complain about the testing with a proctor, but I personally have no problems with it. Taking a few tests twice a year is better than having to wake up at 5:30 everyday for school, on top of getting less than 6 hours of sleep at night. I am extremely happy that they have added new AP courses, and I will be taking all of them. Since I can finish my assignments before 2:00 or 3:00, that leaves time for SAT prep, extra AP's, and time with family. I think it's a great bargain.

In our experience, the curriculum was excellent and the "teachers" did their job well (grading papers and answering questions). The coordinators and other staff, however, are completely unconcerned and useless. They offer excuse after excuse and do NOTHING. There is one gentleman who answers the phone that basically keeps the whole joint running. Without him we would have never made it through. I don't know how much they pay him, but it isn't enough. Also, the teachers live anywhere in the U.S. and the exams are mailed to them. My son's English exam was lost for seven weeks. I sent at least 5 emails and many phone calls to the school and councelor. They then tried to tell me he made the EXACT same grade on the second exam. So basically, they think we are all stupid and will simply believe whatever they feel like tellling us. I believe that defines the term LAZY. I do not recommend this school, despite it being "The University of Texas "High School. It is a severe misrepresentation of the name in my opinion. There are many other online schools with exellent curriculum. You would do yourself a favor to check them out.

BEWARE THE TESTING PROCESS! Like other reviewers, we found the whole testing process to be very time consuming and frustrating. First, they don't warn you that finals for certain courses have to be taken in person with a proctor. To arrange to take the finals is extremely difficult because these people at the testing center are completely unresponsive. We had to arrange for a proctor at the high school, which luckily we were able to do even though it was summer. But after repeated faxes and emails and phone calls, the testing center did not respond for over a week. When they finally did respond, they first wanted us to pay for FedExing the test, but then said "I'll check with my supervisor and let you know and send you the tracking number." That didn't happen. I emailed this morning and we'll see if we hear back. They say you can ask the grader/instructor questions, but you never get an answer. Thank goodness for the person at Education Services I emailed who constantly stepped in and got things moving. But what an effort! Then, there are elements introduced into the course without explanation which cause a lot of angst in the student and even one geometry symbol that we could not find used or explained on the entire web. I feel that not warning you up front about the difficult testing procedure is false advertising. However, you don't learn about that until you go and hit the button for taking the final exam so then you're stuck with the course, and since this was a two-part course, we're stuck with the entire thing. Oh, and all the graded assignments are sent to the graders using snail mail. And they only mail the test materials to the proctor using snail mail. What kind of online course is that! We DO NOT recommend taking this course, and hopefully we will have warned others.

My son is completing high school on line through UT On line High School. The quality of the classes is excellent. I feel he is well prepared to move on to college after taking these classes. He has had to learn how to teach himself and plan and follow a schedule to complete a class in the time allowed. Learning to use the internet for additional explanations and more understandable examples in Physics and Pre Calculus was absolutely necessary. I have found that contacting the school and getting final exams sent to a proctoring test site in our area has been challenging and expensive. There were no grade reports sent by mail. In one case it took several phone calls to get the final grade for a class. Recently the web site has been disabled except for the portal to access the on line classes.
