We have been at Jefferson Academy for a long time. My kids have loved it there for the most part and we have too. The best part of Jefferson has been the amazing, qualified, caring teachers. The adminstration used to be amazing, too. They were involved in everything in the school and provided amazing experiences and opportunities for our kids. They seemed to know all the kids well and were very supportive. They encouraged parents to be involved at the school and it seemed like a very collaborative effort between home and school. But something has changed this year and the school administration has become toxic, to say the least. Parents are not welcome in the school. Concerns are ignored and swept under the rug. If you happen to have a different view than the administration, you are treated poorly. This toxic environment has made it impossible for teachers to feel supported or feel like they can voice their concerns. It is not a safe place to express your opinions or concerns. This has forced many amazing, qualified teachers to leave the school and then be replaced with unqualified people. My fear is that this toxic administration will ruin this school. If the board could look carefully at the administration and listen to the many complaints coming in from parents, I think they could do something to save this school. I think if the adminstration was changed, this school could be great again.

Please be so careful considering this school. The administration is toxic and openly verbally abuses her teachers and staff, which could explain why twelve of them left last year. Teachers are afraid to come forward with their concerns for fear of repercussions from administration. The school board blindly believes anything the director tells them. (Just listen to the board meetings.) The board is so hands off and is so unaware of what goes on inside the walls of the school. They rarely visit the school, they dont talk with teachers and students. All they would need to do is look at the directors emails to her teachers to catch a glimpse of what goes on. In addition, parents have almost been completely banned from volunteering and being at the school. (Red flag!) This could be because admin does not want parents to actually know what goes on at the school, and how students and teachers are actually treated. Concerned parents and teachers should go to board meetings and continue to make their experiences known. The school board needs to start doing their homework and start looking into these concerns! This could be a great school. There are some amazing teachers, but who could possibly be their best in such a hostile environment?

My daughter has gone to this school for 4 years as a special education student. The administration does not have these childrens best interests in mind when making decisions, they are under staffed and the staff they do have (after firing the most amazing SpEd teacher that made that entire department what it was when it was great) are severely unqualified to be in that classroom and the administration knows that but chose to hire them anyway. There was no plan in place to protect our children when they fired the teacher. The only qualified aide they had, they moved to be a long term sub in another class and never told us and it ultimately left our children vulnerable. OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT A PRIORITY HERE. Some students suffered, physically and emotionally because of their actions. They have been reported to the State School Board. There has been very little effort to rectify the situation theyve caused. When all the parents decide to urgently remove their children from a school, you know there is a HUGE problem in admin and there is no accountability for the director. She has too much pride and power and it is detrimental to the school. Theyre losing so many teachers and students because the director makes terrible choices and refuses to communicate with parents. She wouldnt give us the time of day to talk us about our concerns for our children. She left us blindsided and left our children in an awful situation in that classroom. Shame on you, Nicole. Shame on you.

This school would get ZERO stars if it could. There are some amazing and wonderful teachers at this school, however the administration is so toxic and so unprofessional I would avoid it all together. You would think something would be done after shes ran off teacher after teacher and family after family, but no her and her manicured office and clothing collection prevails. Nicole Jones only cares about getting to her daughters dance recitals and ensuring the school has over priced signs for every occasion. What really should be addressed is the lack of appropriate and skilled help, the blatant disregard of parent complaints, and the cowardice in which Nicole hides behind in her INFAMOUS emails or lack there of. I pulled my children from this school because they were ignoring special education law and put appearance before safety and consistency of my kids. Even if you do go there, dont think any concern that is voiced will be heard and the board is a farce so Nicole Jones is basically the end all be all at that school, which is in some serious need of checks and balances. This school has become a joke and the Special Education department needs to be investigated.

My son is in kindergarten here, and we were hesitant at putting him in a charter school. But from the first tour to back to school night to my son being 3 months in, we are blown away by Jefferson! Our son has learned so much in his advanced classit keeps him from boredom and he is doing first grade level material! His teacher is absolutely amazing. I love that the school teaches good habits, has weekly specials: Spanish, PE, art and music, does leveled math and reading, and utilizes positive reinforcement. I feel like my son is receiving a rich education here, and were here to stay! My son cant wait to go to school every day, and I am not exaggerating!

I do NOT recommend sending your child to JA.A lot of the positive reviews you see are from staff and previous staff. One year we were told that we could win gift cards if we went on all the main websites and wrote positive reviews. Do you research.
There are positives: the teachers try so hard and want to be the best that they can be for their students. However, due to administration, teachers are often put in less than ideal situations with little to no help but are micromanaged in every way possible. As teachers, it is our job to know our students, what is best for them, and how to help them through their circumstances. But JA's director insists that things are done her way or no way. She has planned out (to the minute) how teachers are to teach certain curriculum with no consideration towards Developmentally Appropriate Practice (what is age appropriate, especially with students 2nd grade and younger).
There is no discipline, only candy and toys. If you are a bully, you get treats and toys. Often times good students will comment on why they don't get rewarded for doing what they are supposed to be doing, when the student that was hitting them at recess gets candy just for coming into the classroom and sitting down. If a child throws a fit and destroys a classroom (or beats up another student), they get to go have iPad time and a snack to "calm down" and then are sent back to class.
The director also spends a lot of money on useless, unnecessary things, such as lawn signs for EVERY occasion, decorations, and cookies that cost $50 a dozen. For the canned food drive last year, there was a big prize (most cost more than $5; for example, hats, stuffed animals, large pop it toys, etc.) for almost every student in the school. If a student got a prize they didn't like, the director went and bought other things to give them instead. As a side note, staff did not receive bonus pay at the end of the year. Staff that intended to return next year received $50 gift cards and staff not returning received $25. In years past, the bonus was performance based and was upwards of $2k.

The teachers here are wonderful, but the administration sets up a very toxic work environment for their teachers and staff. Ultimately, its the students who are let down. Jeffersons idea of class management and discipline is feeding kids candy and toxic positivity. The director, Nicole Jones is very unprofessional and often chooses not address valid concerns. Please do your research as most of the positive reviews are from teachers who were bribed by the director to do so.

Two of my children currently attend Jefferson Academy and they are both thriving. I love the leveled reading and math! I also really appreciate the emphasis on character building and reinforcing good behavior. I feel the methods used are helping my kids become not only better students, but better individuals. I am impressed with the overall well-rounded education my kids are receiving and I love the emphasis on U.S. history. So far, all my dealings with the teachers, administration and staff have been positive. We're proud to call ourselves Jefferson Eagles.

My granddaughter was able to explain to me what it means to be a bully and even shared her thoughts that sometimes someone might be a bully because they just need a friend or don't know how to deal with what they're feeling. She also shared that they have lots of lessons on how important it is to be kind and considerate of others and what to do when someone is bullying them. The school takes it seriously and works hard to make sure students understand that bullying is unacceptable for any reason.

As a grandparent, I am beyond thrilled with the experience my grandchildren receive at Jefferson Academy. The principal has taken time to greet me and others and has even asked how she can help our family. The office staff are always helpful. The teachers seem so happy to be there and go the extra mile to make their classrooms an exciting and inviting learning environment and the lessons engaging for students. Thank you, JA!

Our experience with our child being accepted and then prior to school starting a new year has been awful communication with the office staff, Kathi Lewis to be specific. She knew our circumstance and could have done more to help us. Due to poor communication we disenrolled our child through email and we didnt receive an email in response or any type of follow up. I would not recommend your child going to this school. We drove by the outside and there wasnt anything special about it. Its no wonder they had space available for enrollment because of how they treated us. If they treated us this way I can imagine how much other families had a similar experience. Also a staff meme bee called us to test our child and she obviously didnt get the memo that we disenrolled our child. Another sign of no communication between staff. We had another problem with YMCA offered at there school but will post about that in another review if that problem doesnt get fixed soon.

Jefferson Academy is a great school. Its organized, cared for, and a happy place to be. The grade level teachers care so much about the students success in the classroom and are willing to do anything to help them reach their full potential. I love that each student is tested at the beginning of the year and then placed in a leveled class for reading and math. It makes me know the children are getting extra practice in the subject if they need it and if they are ahead, are receiving above grade level education. Jefferson has a full library, a fun P.E. program, successful music programs, and learn new techniques in art each week. The director at Jefferson Academy wants the staff and students to succeed and does everything she can to make Jefferson a great environment.

Every student is cared about and administration works very hard to make sure that no one falls through the cracks. Our director make sure that all needs are met, both student and staff. What an amazing school! The focus on history builds character and really helps children learn about our country and develop a love of their country! This school would be excellent, however, the director is inexperienced and wants complete control over everything. Her methods only sabatoge chances to create a positive environment. She is impossible to work with and lacks common sense and communication skills. She has consistently alienated parents and through her actions discourages students to trust her. Unfortunately, students' self-esteem is crushed and independence is suppressed because her leadership filters into the classroom as well. Stay away from this school!

We took our two kids out and took them to Highmark where they have had a way better experience. The teachers allowed my boys to get away with things and I did not want them to. I wanted them to hold firm to rules.

Inexperienced teachers and poor teacher retention make this school somewhat of a circus with constant teacher rotation. Teachers are inattentive to student needs, and the principle is like a high school prom queen and not qualified to run the school. Office staff are condescending and make any request unnecessarily difficult. The school is seemingly run on a rewards system of candy, which my child is mostly allergic to. Despite frequent visits with the teacher and continuous education of his diet, she continued to give my child candy. I am so glad I removed my children from this school. They are getting a much better education with teachers that are experienced and who care and listen.

I have been with the school long enough to see quite a few changes. Not all changes were good, not all were bad, but within this 2013-2014 school year, I can honestly say that most of the changes have been good for the school and good for the students. The administration has a firm view of what will help the students (and teachers) improve and progress forward. Are we concerned with test scores and data? Yes. What teacher/school/district/state isn't? It's true we adopted Reading Street this year, and although there was some grumbling about it in the beginning, it has been a GREAT, comprehensive program. We've never had a "reading program" and this is fabulous. From an educator's view, Spalding was not working for us. Admin had doors installed in the rotunda this year, and students and parents have to be buzzed in to enter the school now. It's wonderful! You will not find a hard working team of educators and support personnel to work with your student. Give Jefferson Academy a try, and become a part of an EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY, not just a school. You may not like everything we do, but you can be sure we bust our tails to give our students the very best we can give!

Is not what it once was. The American history and citizenship emphasis is gone. The students get just the basic history curriculum mandated by the state. But there are several Theater and Drama classes to choose from in the Junior HIgh! They have also swallowed Common Core curriculum hook, line and s[t]inker. No more Spalding, hello Reading Street! They have also become much more focused on scores than on learning. Hence, the curriculum dumb downs. My favorite..at Back to School Night the direcotr says that student safety is their number focus. So they spend money on access controlled side doors, but the front doors can be walked right through and if the secretaries are busy, right into the school. The best part about the safety emphasis is the lack of a crossing guard. So, the school is now unprotected just as before from any sort of intruder, the admins have reserved parking and repainted offices, there is 2 new sets of interior doors, yet no way to help the children cross a busy street twice daily? The school had its issues, but now it just seems like any other school in many respects, and worse than average since they lie about being an History & Citizenship school.

We went to Oquirrh Mtn after homeschooling for a year and absolutely loved it. The parents are very involved and teachers plan all sorts of great activities for the kids to help them with what they are learning! My kids were challenged and learned so much, I would recommend this to school to anyone!

I am a homeschool mom but two of my children really wanted to try "school". I homeschool with a emphasis on American History so this school intrigued me. When I walked in I was very imressed at the pictures of the founding fathers on the wall and our founding documents. Also the three pillars that are the school's focus are displayed which are Moral excellency, Citizenship and Scholarship. Every Monday morning students were recognized in an assembly who demonstrated those qualites. I also liked the opportunity to be in team sports where you do not have to be pro. to make the team. The school tries to have a variety of experiences for the students. Last month they had thy BYU full folk team come and perform. It was awesome! My eight grade daughter was sick of her jr. high school because of the materialism so I loved the uniforms, she also hated the books with tons of swearing that was in them at the other school, so when she switched over we were glad that this school is more cautious with the books that the kids are assigned to read. The principal and vice principal are awesome! They are men of moral excellency which is important to model for these kids.

We are new to the area. For three months my daughter sat alone at lunch and had no friends at her jr. high. It was very sad. I talked her in to trying Jefferson academy(oquirrh mt). She walked in and people were coming up to her and asking her name. So she was happy. The Math was much higher than her jr. high. They use saxon which is what I love! But she had to devout about 2 hrs a night because it was much harder than her old school's math. However, she is now understanding math much better than she ever has and even getting A's on the tests! Because this is a new school I see that the elementary is more solid than the jr. high. The jr. high has a mix between nice kids that did not like the drama of their jr. high school to problem kids where their parents are trying to get them away from their problem friends. However, I believe every year there will be less and less problem kids because of the elementary kids that are returning and moving into the higher grades. That being said, you will have the same mix of problem kids at a regular school but this school has smaller classes, better focus on values, and better curriculum. So I still would choose this school.

I was so impressed with this school this year. I was nervous because some people say that the board is out of control and they get rid of teachers left and right. however, isn't this one of the benefits of a charter school. If they hire a teacher and they see that they are not teaching in a manner that works for the focus of the school then they can replace them. In a regualar school they would let that teacher keep teaching for the next 30 yrs. while destroying children's self esteem and love of education. SO I have to say that I am happy that the board watches out for our kids. Not that I have seen "bad" teachers hired but just that the board has kids at the school and they want the best mentors that will teach the children moral excellency, scholorship and citenzship in a way that prepare theses kids to move the cause of liberty. That is why the school was created. I love that this school teaches latin and saxon math. I love the things that the kids get exposed to an a cultural level. I love the principal, secetaries, and vice principal. Mr. Finch is so positive, happy and involved. He even tap danced at the talent show last week. This is a great school. Very impressed.

Rating of 5 is not accurate! Those test scores are from the very first year the school was opened. They need to update and get 2011 and 2012 and the rating will go up. Great school, great staff, great focus, great curriculum! Best school I have seen and I homeschooled for 10 years.

We just finished our first year at Jefferson Academy (formerly Oquirrh Mountain). I had children in K, 3rd, 6th, and 8th grade. I have been very happy with the quality of the teachers and staff, with the excellent curriculum (big fan of Core Knowledge), my children have all progressed, and even excelled here, and with the small class sizes, they have been able to have individualized attention. Any concerns have been met with a strong willingness to work to create the best environment for my children, the extracurricular activities are great - we participated in drama and cross country track - they are constantly working to improve the school. Every child is encouraged to be involved with the different activities available, everyone is given the chance to excel, and children are rewarded for their good efforts. I have loved my opportunities to volunteer in the school - great group of parents and faculty - and I felt like I was "home" from the beginning. There have been bumps and glitches - it's still a new school - but the overall experience has been excellent. Three of my children will be returning next year, and I plan on being involved for years to come.

My 2nd grader, who as struggled in reading since Kindergarten started at Oquirrh Mountain (now Jefferson Academy) in the Fall of 2011. Since then his progress has been phenomenal! He has progressed several reading levels to the point of now approaching grade level. I feel that Jefferson Academy is a really great place where teaching and learning is loved and practiced. In my experience the students receive personal attention and extra help when needed. The curriculum is integrated throughout grade levels and is engaging and challenging.

My kids have been going there since the school opened. I am very pleased with it. I was sad to see Mr. Bell go, however the whole thing seemed to have been blown up! The new principal has been great! I am pleased. He brings a whole new way of things as well. Also the new teachers have been great as well. They all seem to work a lot better with each other then last year. It is well worth looking into! A lot of things that weren't going last year are this year-the library for example. We now have a real librarian and it's in order. Very pleased with this year!

Even though I disagreed with the school board about letting MR.Bell the principal go. I do have to say that many of the teachers have remained and that its still has good as it was before. My daughter has continued at Oquirrh mountain and is excelling as usual. There is a wonderful 4th grade teather named Mrs. Koewn that I really love who is sweet but firm at the same time. I have a great teacher for my youngest son who is in kindergarten now named Mrs. Baird who is also amazing. I would recommend this school if you want your children to be well educated.

My son (6th grade) loves this school. He is treated well by the teachers and the students. I don't see the student harrassment that he endured at his other school. He wants to continue at this school until the end of junior high. We are so glad we switched. This is our first year and I don't see any problems with the teachers or administration.

My son was being bullied at a local public school,he was the constant blame for the problem, when I addressed the teacher if she actually ever saw what happened, she stated "no, usually its going on when I am not around, and then I notice it when it gets too escalated." My response to this was: "oh, so when my son is REACTING to being kicked, you only notice HIS behavior" what a joke. So we decided to make the switch. I've seen a light turn on in my child. He is a different child now that he is no longer bored with the curriculum and constantly being harassed. He's been there less than a month but, wow!

I feel the drama at the school has been blown way out of proportion. Most opinions of what has been happening are based on hearsay rather than actual knowledge. I support the former principal and did not agree with the boards decision but I sincerely believe this is the best place for my children. I have loved the teachers, leveled math and reading, and I believe the new principal ought to be given the opportunity to support and encourage a positive learning environment the same as our former principal was. I believe this school is well on it's way to a 5 star rating!

We will not be sending our four children back to this school next year for the soul reason that the principal Mr. Bell has been let go. He is truly the best principal we've ever had. He is the reason that this school has been successful for its first two years. Without him and with the runnaway board that has taken all power from the parents, the school will go down hill fast. Many of the good teachers have quit or are on their way out.

Love this school! My kids have been there since it started and while it got off to a slow start, it has been roaring ever since! We have seen our concerns from last year addressed and improved upon and our kids have made more progress than we could have expected. Teachers and staff are professional, enthusiastic, and kind. The only thing I would change is an option for full day kindergarten, but you can't get that anywhere around here, so it's not really a complaint, just a wish!
